SEVEN TIMES SEVEN (to the fourth power)! Part II

Let’s continue on our fascinating voyage to discover the seven times over prophetic pearl found in the most unlikely part of God’s treasure map—the Old Testament book of Leviticus. The map will be easier to understand if you’ve read last week’s article, Seven Times Seven, Part I. In order to reach our destination, we need to travel along the path of a premise: The seven times over model depicted in Leviticus prophetically encompasses a chronological period of time, in parallel fashion to the seven sets of seven announced by the angel Gabriel to Daniel, found in Daniel Chapter 9 … as presented in the Eye of Prophecy article two weeks ago entitled, An Incredible Prophecy.

In Leviticus Chapter 26, we find that the fourth and final phase of God’s seven times over punishment would result in Israel’s scattering or exiled expulsion, “among the nations …. Your land will become desolate, and your cities will lie in ruins” (Verse 33). That is exactly what happened when Babylon attacked and destroyed the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin, including Jerusalem and surrounding towns. In 586 BC, mighty Babylon soundly defeated Israel, but according to Jeremiah’s prophecy the Jews would once again return to Israel. That also happened—with Bible scholars pretty much in full agreement that the completion of the 2nd Temple in 516 BC marked the end of the 70-year Babylonian captivity.

What Were the General & Specific Reasons for the Seven Times Punishment?

To answer that question we need to closely examine Israel’s offenses (sins) before and after the Babylonian captivity. From last week’s article, we learned that the general on-going wrongdoings of Israel entailed national (meaning the majority of the Hebrews including their religious and political leaders) disobedience of and hostility toward God. Four times this is identified by such phrases as, “And if, in spite of all this, you still disobey me.” And “…you still refuse to listen and still remain hostile toward me…” (Leviticus 26:18 & 27).

But then the Lord gets more specific by explaining that the ongoing discipline also stems from Israel’s failure to keep another vital commandment: Not to plant crops every seventh year so the land could rest; that would, in turn, guarantee bountiful harvests. After the people would be completely defeated and evicted from the land by their conquerors, the passage emphasizes through repetition, “Then at last the land will enjoy its neglected Sabbath years as it lies desolate while you are in exile in the land of your enemies. Then the land will finally rest and enjoy the Sabbaths it missed. As long as the land lies in ruins, it will enjoy the rest you never allowed it to take every seventh year while you lived in it” (Leviticus 26:34-35).

In light of the clear reasons given for the seven times over discipline announced in Leviticus 26 (the continuous, unrelenting disobedience and refusal to listen to “all these commands,” meaning the entire scope of the Mosaic Law), why did God then identify and pinpoint neglect of the seven-year Sabbath rest as the tripping or trigger point for the final phase of God’s punishment, i.e. exile to Babylon?

I believe the answer is two-fold: (1) with precious few exceptions, in Israel’s history we find the people frequently rebelling against the Lord; then denying that the consequences of their defiance was directly connected to God’s discipline. We see this throughout the period of the judges, the kings, and through all the prophets that God continually sent to Israel to warn them. In fact, many of these prophets were ridiculed, tormented, and even killed by the priests and kings of Israel. This cycle of disobedience and denial grew progressively worse after King Solomon’s reign.

The last book written by the last prophet of the Old Testament contains a nutshell summary regarding Israel’s denial of their true spiritual and national condition. The Book of Malachi is followed by four hundred years of silence, in which there were no kings, no prophets, and no communication from God to the people. The prophet Malachi presents a series of replies from Israel’s leaders in which they rationalized and refuted the reality of their sins … by answering God’s questions with questions of their own. And it’s all too evident that the people’s questions were nothing more than cynical, even sarcastic attempts to justify their behavior and, perhaps, escape any further discipline from God. For example, the book opens with God announcing to Israel: “I have always loved you,” says the Lord. But you (the people) retort, “Really? How have you loved us?” (Malachi 1:2).

Then a few verses later: “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to the priests: …’You have shown contempt for my name!’” Then the Lord says, “But you (meaning the priests/people) ask, ‘How have we ever shown contempt for your name?’” Then the Lord answers: “You have shown contempt by offering defiled sacrifices on my alter.” Then the people ask, “How have we defiled the sacrifices?” (Malachi 1:6-7). On and on it goes, as the people refuse to acknowledge their transgressions against God and against each other, and even dare to challenge God’s analysis of their spiritually bankrupt condition.

(2) Since the people—from the time Moses and then Joshua died, to the Babylonian captivity and beyond— rationalized, repudiated, or at the very least minimized their rebellion through hardness of heart and spiritual blindness, God identified a specific offense that no one in Israel could possibly explain away… the obvious failure to keep the seven-year Sabbath in which the land would lie fallow. And in doing so, the prophecy includes the very essence of time itself, i.e. the progressive seven times over duration of Israel’s punishment. In fact, the core of the 70-year Babylonian captivity prophecy is based on the Leviticus passage, as remarkably summarized after the captivity ended. Let’s read the explanation:

“Likewise, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful. They followed all the pagan practices of the surrounding nations, desecrating the Temple of the Lord that had been consecrated in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent his prophets to warn them … But the people mocked these messengers of God … They scoffed at the prophets until the Lord’s anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done. So the Lord brought the king of Babylon against them … God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar … Then his army burned the Temple of God … The few who survived were taken as exiles to Babylon” (II Chronicles 36: 14-20).

Then the author of II Chronicles indisputably connects the Babylonian exile prophecy to the Leviticus Chapter 26 seven times over prophecy by the following conclusion: “So the message of the Lord spoken through Jeremiah was fulfilled. The land finally enjoyed its Sabbath rest, lying desolate until the seventy years were fulfilled, just as the prophet had said” (Verse 21). Obviously, Jeremiah’s prophecy was linked to the prophetic warnings that Moses had given to the people, even before they entered the Promised Land … long before Jeremiah was born.

Question: Why Didn’t the Seven Times Over Prophecy End in 516 BC?

It’s all too evident that the prophetic clock of Leviticus Chapter 26 begin to tick when Israel entered the Promised Land. The entire book of Deuteronomy is a condensed summary of God’s instructions to Israel just before Joshua led them to several victories over the Canaanites. They were given the choice between life and death, blessing and curses (Deuteronomy 30:19). God even told Moses that the prophecy would, in fact, come to pass; because it (unfortunately) was a foregone conclusion that the Israelites would rebel and turn from God (see Deut. 31 & 32). And that’s exactly what they did, not long after Joshua died.

It’s important to understand that the ultimate seven times over discipline is chronologically consecutive and even more so that it is uninterrupted or continuous in its prophetic unfolding. This is clarified by the passage itself. The Lord repeats a total of four times: IF Israel continues to disobey him, then he will prolong the corrective discipline and each time the punishment will be harsher, culminating in exile to foreign nations. Thus, the seven times over is not a symbolic expression of the severity of the discipline; rather, it is (as we have seen and will see) a measure of the lapse of time that all this will take place.

So, then, in examining Israel’s history from the Promised Land advent to the Babylonian captivity, do we find an unbroken, continuous, linear time-lapse (chain of events) in which Israel never repented or never turned back to the Lord? No, we don’t. This is crystal clear during the times of the Judges and Kings of Israel. There were several periods of time lasting at least two generations (80 years or more), such as the consecutive reign of King David and King Solomon or the subsequent reign of a few “good” kings like Josiah. There were cycles of disobedience, deliverance, and restoration; but, on the whole, the Jews became progressively “hostile” toward the Lord, their God. Thus, the seven times over cycle was not continuous during this period of Israel’s history, which is why the Babylonian exile (as devastating as it was) would last for only 70 years—a relatively mild punishment considering the hundreds of year that Israel was mostly, but not entirely, unfaithful to God and his commands.

You might ask: “Relatively mild compared to what?” Good question. Answer: Compared to what happened AFTER their return to the Holy Land from the 70-year captivity.

Although harsh, God’s punishment of Israel was not merely vindictive; rather it (like all of God’s discipline) was administered for Israel’s own good. It included just the right amount of time, not too long and not too short; that would give Israel’s populace a golden opportunity to fully acknowledge why they were punished in this way, and what was necessary for them to return to the Lord. Furthermore, to make sure nothing like this ever happened again … which they clearly knew the potential from warnings going all the way back to Moses. The prophet Ezekiel dealt with this issue of the exiles not amending their hearts and mind back to God before, during, and after the Babylonian exile.

The Seven Times Seven Punishment Continues

So, did the Babylonian exile bring a conclusion to the seven times over prophecy of Leviticus? Sadly, the answer is, NO. Instead, it set into motion the ultimate severity of the prophecy. What transpired after the return of the Jews was even more tragic. Despite a relatively brief (part of a generation) resurgence of Israel’s devotion to God, as found in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, Israel never fully returned to the Lord. As indicated, the book of Malachi vividly illustrates Israel’s unyielding stubbornness.

Even though the Jews returned to Israel and rebuilt the second temple, they never again became a completely sovereign nation. They never again experienced the full blessings of the Lord. There were no more kings, and the Shekinah glory of God never returned to the temple. There were no prophets for the last 400 years before the birth of John the Baptist, and then the birth of Messiah. Israel had been, to some degree or another, under the domination of the Persians, Greeks, Syrians, and finally the Romans before and after the utter destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.

The first set of seven times over judgments (up to the time of the Babylonian captivity), is best illustrated by the formula: 7 + 7 + 7 + 7. When the people confessed their sins and returned to God, the cycle of discipline ended. In other words the punishments were not continuous; however, each one lasted for a certain period of time, culminating with a specified period of 70 years for the Babylonian captivity.

Because the people didn’t (by any stretch of the imagination) continually seek the Lord when they journeyed back to Israel, the seven times over paradigm began again. This time it would be continuous, leading all the way to and through the greatest horror of all … the Holocaust of the 20th century. There would be no stoppage of the increments of punishment until all four phases had run their course. In fact, the seven times  syndrome contained a mathematically measured built-in period of time, with a beginning and an end.

During this seemingly unending period of time, the fourth phase of discipline would reach its zenith. Remember God’s words: “…then I will give full vent to my hostility. I myself will punish you seven times over for your sins … Yes, I myself will devastate your land … I will scatter you among the nations….” (Leviticus 26: 27-33).

Tragically, Israel did not learn from its Babylonian captivity lesson. From the time Nehemiah returned to Babylon in 433 BC, 12 years after arriving in Jerusalem with another group of exiles to rebuild the walls; to his second trip to Israel a few years later, the people’s promise to serve the Lord had evaporated like an early morning fog. They had fallen into all kinds of detestable practices. Listed to Nehemiah’s words: “So I confronted the nobles of Judah. ‘Why are you profaning the Sabbath in this evil way?’ I asked. ‘Wasn’t it just this sort of thing that your ancestors did that caused our God to bring all this trouble upon us and our city? Now you are bringing even more wrath upon Israel by permitting the Sabbath to be desecrated in this way!’” (Nehemiah 13: 17-18).

And, so the seven times over sequence had begun again. This time the prophetic march of time relentlessly continued unabated and uninterrupted. If, however, the seven times over to the 4th power represents a measurable period of time, then it must come to an end. That’s what occurred to me that night in October, 2006: Although I didn’t know where it would lead me (what year in history), I realized that God was telling Moses and the people that the seven times seven model necessitated and would, in fact, unfold according to an exact prophetic timeline. Moreover, the formula was built into the prophecy: 7 x 7 x 7 x 7. When this prophetic paradigm reached its measurable deadline, Israel’s punishment would also reach its predetermined limit; and they would no longer be under Gentile domination!

A Phenomenal Finding (Let’s do the Math)

Calculations: 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 equals 2,401 (years). Remember the premise: This prophecy is a specific time-lapse utilization of sevens that can be measured in years, in a very similar manner to the Daniel Chapter 9 prophecy. We must now convert the 2,401 years to Jewish years.

Roman to Jewish calendar: 2,401 years x 365 Roman calendar days = 876,365 days. Dividing 876,365 by 360 Jewish calendar days = 2,434 years Jewish years. (We’re rounding this off, because we’re only interested in the year, unlike the exact day(s) of the Daniel prophecy).

Jubilee Years: Again, we need to remember that the ultimate criteria that God used to preclude or preempt any excuses or rationalization of the people was the Sabbatical rest of the land. But we also need to include all Jubilee years, which was a 50-year cycle of freedom from debt, servitude, and also resting the land from crop planting. Because of space/time restraints, I didn’t cover this, but it can be found in Leviticus Chapter 25. Because the Israelites also failed to keep the Jubilee requirements, this would be a central part of God’s formula for discipline.

So we divide 2,434 Jewish years by 50 and we get 49 (rounded off) Jubilee years over that period of time.

We add 2,434 years + 49 (Jubilee) years. The sum of these two: 2,483 (years).

The Astonishing Result: 2,483 years minus 516 BC (we must subtract BC years from the total) leads us to the year: 1967! Or 1,967 years AD plus 516 years BC is a total of 2,483 years.

What makes the year 1967 so amazing? We will cover this in more detail during next week’s article, but for now I will simply say: In 1967, one of the three monumental milestones of Jewish modern history took place. In fact, many students of Biblical prophecy (including me) identify the six-day war of June, 1967 as the turning point of Israel’s future, even surpassing her statehood of 1948. For the 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 prophecy to end in 1967 is no coincidence or a mathematical fluke.

On the contrary: It is absolutely incredible!! It is yet another remarkable Biblical prophecy that involves the divine number seven and its precise relevance in today’s world by connecting God’s ancient covenant with Israel to its modern-day rebirth and deliverance from Gentile domination.

*Note: I didn’t start with the year 1967 and work backwards. In fact, I had no idea where the calculations would take me, in terms of any specific year. I was as curious then as you probably are now while reading this article.

Summary:

Now let’s read the rest of the happy-ending story: “Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob … and I will remember the land. For the land must be abandoned to enjoy its years of Sabbath rest as it lies deserted. At last the people will pay for their sins, for they have continually rejected my regulations and despised my decrees. But despite all this, I will not utterly reject or despise them while they are in exile in the land of their enemies. I will not cancel my covenant with them by wiping them out, for I am the Lord their God. For their sakes I will remember my ancient covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of all the nations, that I might be their God. I am the Lord” (Leviticus 26: 42-45, italics for emphasis).

I highlighted at last and continually to further underscore two vital component parts of this prophecy and to validate my premise that it is a measurable time-capsule prediction. At last demonstrates the sheer duration/length of what had been nearly 2,500 years of Jewish subjugation to the gentile nations. And the concept of continually shows the unremitting period of disobedience and perpetual punishment until the discipline ended in 1967.

Things to Ponder:

Although the Babylonian captivity was a planned period of discipline (70 years), the second and final dispersion of the Jews by the Romans in 70 AD is not specifically given a beginning and ending date in Scripture, not in the fashion of Jeremiah’s prophecy of the 70 years or Daniel’s prophecy of the 483 and 490 years. Rather, the Great Diaspora that began in 70 AD, the pogroms in Russia and surrounding countries, followed by the 20th century Holocaust are all part of the continuous 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 prophetic time-line.

I think the reason for such a harsh, long period of time (from the return of the exiles in 516 BC to the recapture of Jerusalem in 1967) was the severity of Israel’s ultimate disobedience. They abandoned their ultimate Sabbath Rest, and their ultimate Jubilee by rejecting their very Messiah and Redeemer who is our Sabbath Rest for all eternity. But one day all of Israel (those who acknowledge Jesus as Messiah) will be saved, both physically and spiritually!

Don’t miss next week’s article, as it will explain in more detail what the year 1967 meant to the Jews, but also to the entire world.

Seven Times Seven (to the 4th power)! Part I

SEVEN TIMES SEVEN (to the fourth power)! Part I

Who would ever imagine that the Old Testament Book of Leviticus would be the source of any of God’s prophecies let alone a prediction that is incredibly precise by virtue of a continuous “seven times over” chronological cycle that has a specific beginning and ending date. Leviticus is a book of the Mosaic Law that recorded God’s decrees, regulations, and commands to Israel; regarding (universal) moral standards, national ceremonial laws, atoning sacrifices, and celebratory annual festivals. Prophetic things are normally found in the books written by Jewish Prophets, i.e. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, some of the Psalms, and more. But Leviticus?

What we are about to discover is a stunning counterpart to last week’s study of the time-capsule revelation given to the prophet Daniel as recorded in Daniel Chapter 9, and decoded by Sir Robert Anderson; specifically, the 483-year time-lapse prophecy that Messiah Jesus fulfilled to the very day, when he rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday—five days before his crucifixion, and one week before his resurrection.

First, let’s examine the text to establish two important premises: (1) God’s specific instructions and conditions to Israel were, in fact, prophetic (both as a promise and warning); (2) the real-life and real-time fulfillment of the conditional promises/warnings actually occurred during a specified period of Israel’s history that is also an integral part of world history.

The Prophetic Conditions

You might recall from last week’s article: God had told Abraham that his descendants would be delivered from 400 years (four generations) of captivity and slavery in a foreign land. This prophecy was announced several hundred years before Jacob and his family moved to Egypt and then fulfilled when God delivered the Israelites from Egypt by means of astounding miracles, including parting of the Red Sea. A short time after this stunning deliverance, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments along with numerous other laws, not the least of which was the sacrificial system to atone for the transgressions of the people.

Through animal sacrifices, the sins of the people were forgiven; but this was a continual process day after day, year after year. However, these sacrifices only covered the wrongdoings of Israel (the people); they did not remove them. In other words, neither the sacrifices nor keeping of the law itself (which no one could ever do, including Moses himself) achieved an ultimate or perfect reconciliation to/with a Holy God. According to both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the only true means of salvation itself was the faith of an individual … total trust in the true and living God. This trust was credited as righteousness. We can best understand this God-approved accreditation as a guaranteed deposit (in this case a down payment), which at the God-appointed time hundreds of years later was completely validated, sealed, and stamped by the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Let’s read exactly what Scripture has to say about this matter. First from the Old Testament: “And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith” (Genesis 15:6). Then from the New Testament: “Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the Scriptures tell us, ‘Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith’” (Romans 4: 1-3).

From the very beginning of God’s relationship with man, faith—believing in and totally trusting God which is simply taking him at his word—constituted the true basis of righteousness … right-standing with God. Under the Mosaic Law, God continued to be the ultimate object of his people’s faith. But a vital component of this faith was also fine-tuned with a practical application and redirection to a continual trust in God’s provisions of atonement through the Levitical sacrificial system that was a prototype of God’s ultimate (better) covenant with both Jews and Gentiles. This New Covenant was authored and finished by God’s very Son, Jesus Christ, as the once and for all sacrificial payment for our sins and the penalty of those sins, which is the very foundation of the New Covenant of Grace. Then, to better understand the very essence of this prophecy in Leviticus, we need to recognize the conditional nature of the Mosaic Covenant: God’s blessing (not salvation, but God’s favor) depended on Israel’s obedience to God’s instructions.

Actually, this pattern or principle is also true with the New Covenant of Grace. Meaning that salvation is not based upon what we DO or don’t do, or our behavior, or our merit or worth; rather, it is contingent on one and only one thing … simply believing in Christ and what he did for us on the cross (TRUST). Yet, God’s blessings are often contingent upon our (with and through the strength of Christ and the Holy Spirit) obedience to his word and leading; which, by the way, is nothing more than continued trust in Him for all things. Just as the Israelites were to trust him for their entire welfare. Conversely, when we Christians (as with Israel under the Old Covenant) go our own way and leave God out of our lives and certainly when we deliberately sin and then refuse to confess the wrong things we’ve done, God will discipline us … because we are his children and he loves us and he wants the very best for us. (See Hebrews Chapter 12).

Let’s, then, examine the conditional promises of God to Israel and see exactly what happened to God’s people (and even more incredibly the historical time-lapse capsule of when it began and ended) as a prophetic fulfillment to blessings for obedience and punishment for disobedience.

Blessings for Obedience

Since we will learn that Israel eventually failed to keep her part of the covenant and because the seven times over result of her disobedience is the primary subject of these articles, we’ll take but a brief look at the blessings in exchange for Israel’s obedience. God begins his instructions to Moses (and the people) by saying:

“If you follow my decrees and careful to obey my commands, I will send you the seasonal rains. The land will then yield its crops … you will eat your fill and live securely in your own land … I will give you peace in the land, and you will be able to sleep with no cause for fear … in fact, you will chase down your enemies … I will look favorably upon you, making you fertile and multiplying your people. And I will fulfill my covenant with you. You will have a surplus of crops … I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people…” (Leviticus 26: 3-12).

As noted, the above excerpts are but a few of the highlight blessings that God would bestow on Israel, if they would only remain faithful to him. This passage and others throughout the Old Testament clearly demonstrate that in order for Israel to fully enjoy the Promised Land, to experience times of plenty and prosperity, to dwell securely in the land with no fear of their enemies, and finally TO EVEN REMAIN IN THE LAND ITSELF, Israel would need to listen, love, and continue to learn about the God of Israel—indeed, the only true and living God.

Disobedience Equals Discipline

God is loving and forgiving, but he is also holy, righteous, and truth itself; thus, there is always a perfect balance of justice to everything he does. The administration of discipline is an integral part of God’s awesome character and attributes. And so, we now must sadly turn to the “rest of the story” as found in Leviticus Chapter 26. And what we find is an extraordinary expression by God himself concerning the sequential progression of Israel’s corrective punishment. With subsequent articles, we will discover exactly WHEN and how these stunning announcements of Israel’s future (which makes them prophetic) would take place, to this very day.

We begin with the following: “However, if you do not listen to me or obey all these commands, and if you break my covenant by rejecting my decrees, treating my regulations with contempt … I will punish you….” (Leviticus 26: 14-16). The chapter continues with a few specifics of what would happen to the people. Then the passage suddenly turns to an emphatically harsher, more exacting … but also mysterious, almost cryptic description of how and to what extent God’s discipline would unfold. One that I had not really considered in-depth or by any means comprehended until a little over seven years ago when reading this chapter. For now I will just say that it was truly a phenomenal disclosure of what God is saying, the understanding of which could not be fully grasped until the 20th century … even beyond the time (late 19th century) when Sir Robert Anderson was given the insight into the Daniel Chapter 9 prophecy.

Let’s continue reading God’s Word to Moses and the Israelites: “And if, in spite of all this, you still disobey me, I will punish you seven times over for your sins. I will break your proud spirit by making the skies as unyielding as iron and the earth as hard as bronze. All your work will be for nothing, for your land will yield no crops, and your trees will bear no fruit” (Leviticus 26: 18-20, italics for emphasis).

*Note: Both for sake of time/space in this article and for your benefit in absorbing a complete panoramic overview of this “seven times over” prophetic warning, I would strongly encourage you to read the entire 26th Chapter of Leviticus. For now we will continue with the remaining three (there are a total of four) prophetic proclamations. With each seven-times warning, the passage presents the nature and extent of the punishment.

The second seven times warning: “If, even then you remain hostile toward me and refuse to obey me, I will inflict disaster on you seven times over for your sins” (Leviticus 26:21, italics for emphasis). Then the third warning: “And if you fail to learn the lesson and continue your hostility toward me, then I myself will be hostile toward you. I will personally strike you with calamity seven times over for your sins. I will send armies against you to carry out the curse of the covenant you have broken…. (Leviticus 26: 23-25, italics for emphasis).

And then the fourth and final warning: “If in spite of all this you still refuse to listen and still remain hostile toward me, then I will give full vent to my hostility. I myself will punish you seven times over for your sins … I will make your cities desolate … I will take no pleasure in your offerings that should be a pleasing aroma to me. Yes, I myself will devastate your land…. (Leviticus 26: 27-32, italics for emphasis).

This fourth and final segment of the seven times over discipline contains more extensive and graphic details of what will happen to Israel, but the most severe of all begins in verse 33, “I will scatter you among the nations and bring out my sword against you. Your land will become desolate, and your cities will lie in ruins.” Then later in verse 36: “And for those of you who survive, I will demoralize you in the land of your enemies. You will live in such fear….”

Although we will expand on this more thoroughly in coming articles, for now all we need to remember is what happened when the Romans attacked and conquered Israel and Jerusalem in 70 AD, killing hundreds of thousands of Jews, utterly destroying the city and the Temple, and exiling nearly all survivors (eventually) to almost every nation on the earth. This catastrophic event is called The Great Dispersion. Next came an even more appalling and horrifying cataclysmic event that we all know as the Holocaust during World War II; in which six million Jews were ruthlessly murdered by Hitler’s Third Reich.

A Preparatory Evaluation of Seven Times Over

When reading the ominous warnings given directly by God to Israel in Leviticus 26 (and later summarized in the book of Deuteronomy), some 7 years ago, I asked myself the question: “Why did the Lord utilize the paradigm (or concept or model or formula—if you will) of seven times over, a total of four times? Wouldn’t once or maybe twice be totally sufficient to get the point across to Israel? My first knee-jerk response was that the seven times over was an allegorical means to emphasize the harshness of God’s punishment, i.e. the discipline would be seven times more severe than the offense itself for all four phases of Israel’s disobedience.

Please understand: There are four distinct series or sets of warning. All four generically describe Israel’s on-going disobedience and rejection of God. Why not just one sweeping statement by the Lord to announce his punishment for Israel’s continued hostility toward him? Why four? What specifically do all four or any one of the four characterize or denote? Do they represent or mean essentially nothing and/or is God simply repeating himself? No, there’s a reason for EVERYTHING in God’s Word. Plus each of the four sets of seven times over contains different penalties that depict unique and distinct consequences.

So, I quickly dismissed the metaphorical (severity) application for two main reasons:
– (1) God clearly states in the passage that he will, “not utterly reject or despise” Israel during their time of exile in the land of their enemies (conquerors). A seven times over harsher penalty administered in all four consecutive phases, simply doesn’t fit with God’s mercy or compassionate love for Israel. Think about it for a moment: If, in fact, God’s (in proportional, mathematical terms of severity) punishment of Israel was seven times harsher than their offense, they simply couldn’t have survived. They have barely survived as it is … for nearly two thousand years—until their miraculous rebirth as a nation in 1948.

Not only that, what does seven times the offense mean, or how could it possibly be understood or measured by Moses, or the Israelites or by anyone else (including you and me), in terms of just what constitutes seven times? Would it be the number of Jews killed by Gentiles, the length of crop failure, the relative brutality of their enemies, or any other hard-to-quantify criteria? It simply isn’t feasible to try to calculate all the specific means and methods that God would use to discipline his people seven times more than the offense.

Also, if God only meant to convey the idea that the punishment fits the crime (which, by the way, is a vital truth in the Mosaic law), then all four phases would/could not be seven times over; if, in fact, the seven times over is a metaphorical expression of the severity. If the expression of “times over” is simply metaphorical or symbolic of the degree of punishment; then it would be much more logical and comprehensible for the “times over” punishment to be incrementally progressive. For example: two times over for the 1st set, three times harsher for the 2nd set, five times for the third, then seven times over for the fourth and final installment. But each one of the four phases are seven times over.

– (2) With that in mind, there is an even stronger and more compelling reason that the seven-times over doesn’t apply to or represent in any way the severity factor or degree of punishment. If you read the passage carefully, here’s what you will find: Each time (phase’s one through four) that God identifies the punishment to be experienced by Israel, the punishments themselves ARE more severe. In other words, the severity factor is built-in to each of the four phases of discipline, as they become progressively more severe, one through four. With, by far, the most severe that of being completely conquered, destroyed, and exiled to other countries by their conquerors in the fourth set of the seven times over punishments. With the corresponding result that there would be absolutely no purpose or reason for the Lord to metaphorically describe the successive phases of punishments in terms of seven-times over. Because the text is very clear that each discipline, in and of itself, becomes progressively worse.

So what does the seven times paradigm represent or mean? Then it came to me; that is the Lord showed it to me. The expressive purpose for seven times over pertains to one and only one element: TIME. (As in chronological years of history).

Moreover, this time has a beginning point via an enormously significant event in Israel’s history and an equally monumental (exceeding the first event because of the sheer magnitude of joy in the accomplishment) event that marks the end of the seven-times over prophetic calendar. And, if you stay with me for next week’s article, I will do my best to explain exactly why and how the seven times over prophetic language/reference used by God himself resulted in a specific time-duration fulfillment of a significant part of Israel’s history, especially as it relates to the Times of the Gentiles. Stay tuned for what may be one of the most amazing discoveries you’ll ever find in God’s Word, comparable to the stunning disclosure given to Sir Robert Anderson as found in his book, The Coming Prince (see last week’s article).

Things to Ponder
– In preparation for next week’s article, and as a precedent to the premise that the seven times over (four times or to the 4th power) refers to a chronological time-line, did the prophecy of the Babylonian Captivity of Israel specify a measurable period of time? If so, how many years was it?

– And don’t forget the Daniel 9 prophecy that we covered last week, as discerned by Sir Robert Anderson, which entails a specified period of time … from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the coming of the Messiah. This was done by understanding the “sets of seven” language, which is essentially no different from the “seven times over” wording in Leviticus.

An Incredible Time-Lapse Prophecy

AN INCREDIBLE PROPHECY (WITH A PRECISE TIME-LAPSE FULFILLMENT)

What the book of Revelation is to the New-Testament, the book of Daniel is to the Old Testament. Some of Daniel’s predictions were fulfilled about 360 years later, others 560 years afterwards, and still others await the onset of the Tribulation and glorious return of our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

To be sure, there are several other books of both Testaments that are replete with astounding predictions of the future; many have already come to pass, and many more pending fulfillment. The very fact that the Bible boldly forecasts the future (with amazing accuracy), separates it from all other religious writings the world over.

From the Garden of Eden announcement in Genesis of the coming Savior who would conquer the very source of sin and evil, Satan (Genesis 3:15); to a future Prophet like (greater than) Moses, Duet. 18:15); to a Son given to us who will be the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9); to a divine child born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2); to a Messiah who would first be a suffering servant (Isaiah 53); to the Son of Man who would be nailed to a cross, dice thrown for his garments, and all the ugly things that Christ suffered on the cross (Psalms 22); to a Redeemer raised from the dead (Psalms 16:10), and many others.

The books of Daniel and Revelation deliver breath-taking revelations that are similar in scope and detail, particularly disclosures of the Anti-Christ (Daniel 7, 9, 11, alongside of Revelation 13 & 17, including the very identity of this wicked man—see my book Out of the Abyss). Likewise both books provide astonishing before and after information of the four Gentile kingdoms that dominated the world in their time (Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome); as well as Daniel’s precise predictions of the “king of the north” fulfilled hundreds of years later by Antiochus Epiphanies IV. Many are familiar with these prophecies, but not too many are acquainted with or accurately understand a phenomenal prophecy found in Daniel Chapter 9. Let’s read the words given by the angel Gabriel to Daniel:

“A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times” (Daniel 9: 24-25).

Many Old Testament prophets speak of the coming Messiah, listing dozens of literal details as to what the Messiah would experience, how and from where he would originate, how he would be received, and what he would accomplish. What, then, makes the Daniel Chapter 9 prophecy so extraordinarily unique? It pinpoints the actual time when Messiah would arrive on the scene of human history!

There are a handful of other prophecies in which God specifies the length of time before the event will take place or how long the event will last. For example, God told Abraham that, “After four generations your descendants will return here to this land…” (Genesis 15:16). As later confirmed, the Israelites spent 400 years in Egypt, before they were delivered by God through Moses, enabling them to return to the Promised Land. Moreover, at that time, a generation was essentially defined and measured (in terms of time) as a hundred years.

Another example is the precise 70-year exile of the Jews in Babylon foretold by Jeremiah before the mighty Babylonian Empire sacked Jerusalem and demolished Solomon’s Temple. The period of captivity began in 586 BC and ended in 516 BC.

Regarding Daniel’s prophecy, he was told that a period of 70 weeks would be needed to, among other things: “finish their rebellion … atone for their guilt … bring in everlasting righteousness…” (Daniel 9:24). One significant Hebrew expression and measurement of time is that of one week equaling seven years, which is certainly the case in this passage. Nearly all Bible scholars agree with this application. Thus, there would be a total of 490 years (70 x 7) to achieve this remarkable transformation for the nation of Israel—one that would accomplish the very purpose for being a people chosen by God (to bring God’s Word and God’s Savior to all of mankind); and one that would ultimately fulfill Israel’s destiny of people and land (complete physical/spiritual restoration of Israel and Messiah ruling the world from Jerusalem).

Then, however, this specific time-lapse prophecy is narrowed down and essentially “split” as noted in the following verse. “…Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass…” (Daniel 9:25). The preciseness of this prophecy is indisputable in terms of the exact period of time needed (483 years) to accomplish an integral, component part of the entire prediction. When will the 483 year count begin, and what will take place at the end of this fixed period of time? We find the answer in the last part of the verse: “…from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes…” (Verse 25). Thus, there are two events that signal the beginning of the prophecy and its subsequent fulfillment. Daniel’s vision of these astounding events took place in approximately 539 BC.

First Event: The command to rebuild Jerusalem.

At the outset it is vitally important to distinguish the command to rebuild Jerusalem (starting with the walls of the holy city) from another edict/command issued by a totally different ruler to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. It was the Persian King Cyrus who issued the decree in 538 BC for the Jews to return from their Babylonian captivity and rebuild their holy Temple. In fact restoration of the Temple began a few years later and was completed in 516 BC, 70 years after Israel was conquered and exiled to Babylon, i.e. the 70-year prophesied captivity. Some Bible scholars erroneously selected Cyrus’s edict as the beginning point of Daniel’s 483-year prophecy. They mistakenly assumed that the prophetic words of Daniel’s prophecy (rebuild Jerusalem) also applied to the Temple. But, prophetically and historically we can now clearly see that the rebuilt Temple and rebuilt walls of Jerusalem were two distinct events separated by nearly 100 hundred years.

Let’s read the exact wording of Cyrus’s command, “In the first year of King Cyrus’s reign, a decree was sent out concerning the Temple of God at Jerusalem…” (Ezra 6:3, italics for emphasis). The verse goes on to record exactly what Cyrus ordered, “…Let the Temple be rebuilt on the site where Jews used to offer their sacrifices, using the original foundations. Its height will be ninety feet…” (Italics for emphasis). The crucial point here is that Cyrus is referring ONLY to the Temple itself. Also, there are extensive details of the decree … I’ve quoted just the beginning of those details. The Jewish leader Zerubbabel subsequently led the Jewish exiles back to Israel, and supervised the restoration of Solomon’s Temple.

*Note: In the study of Biblical prophecy it is of paramount importance to examine ALL prophecies that relate directly or indirectly to the specific prophecy you’re looking at. If this is not done, then a student of prophecy is subject to error in the application of the Bible to historical events.

Once again notice that Daniel’s prophecy is referring exclusively to the rebuilding of Jerusalem. The specifics of his prediction came to pass generations later, through another decree; this time given by another Persian King Artaxerxes Longimanus to Nehemiah in 445 BC. The Old Testament book of Nehemiah contains the records/history of the edict and renovation of the walls. As with Cyrus’s decree for the Temple, there are several details in King Artaxerxes’ letter to Nehemiah granting permission to, among other things: “beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself. And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me” (Nehemiah 2:8, italics for emphasis). *Note: the fortress gates for the Temple was not part of the Temple itself.

Second Event: Until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes.

The Anointed One is none other than the Messiah; in fact, many Bible translations actually use the term Messiah in Daniel 9:25 (Messiah means Anointed or Chosen One). Yet, Messiah Jesus was on this earth for some 33 years, so what aspect (time-frame) of his life do we select as the year/time when he would come (to the earth)? His birth, passing into Jewish adulthood (age 13), beginning of his ministry, his crucifixion, his resurrection? Answer: none of the above. The moment in time to identify the passage of 483 years can be none other than Palm Sunday, a week before his crucifixion. Why? That is the precise time when Jesus allowed others to recognize and worship him as the Messiah, which is the specific fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy. Prior to his heralded ride into Jerusalem, he had discouraged even his disciples from publicly hailing him as Messiah. Why?

It wasn’t the right time yet. The time chosen by God long before was to synchronize and confirm his very identity as Messiah (Son of God) with his ultimate mission of purchasing our redemption through his death, burial, and resurrection. As indicated, Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday occurred in consecutive weeks. Nearly all Bible scholars agree that the accolades from thousands of people given to Christ as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (historically kings would ride into a city on a donkey if the king was coming in peace … a horse if the king was coming to conquer) demonstrated public acknowledgment that he was Messiah.

If you like, read Luke 19 for the progression of events culminating with shouts of, “Blessings on the King, who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Luke 19:38). The very cries of the people recorded in Luke had been prophesied by the prophet Zechariah: “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt” (Zechariah 9:9).

If then, Daniel’s phenomenal prediction is accurate, adding 483 years to the proclamation of Artaxerxes in 445 BC should match up with the triumphal entry of Jesus to Jerusalem. So, let’s do the math: 483 years minus 445 years =s 38 AD. Oops, we have a problem! This would be several years after Jesus arose from the dead and returned to heaven. Has Daniel’s prophecy failed?

Sir Robert Anderson

In 1894, a Scotland Yard Detective, Robert Anderson, who was also an ardent student of the Bible, especially prophecy, published his book called, The Coming Prince. Through extensive study and research, he corrected and clarified previous applications of Daniel’s prophecy from such notables as Sir Isaac Newton … one of the greatest scientist of all times, but also a Christian who studied Biblical prophecies extensively. We simply can’t do justice to Sir Robert Anderson’s book in one article; therefore, we will briefly examine the two most important discoveries by him (which are really disclosures and discernment given to him by the Lord).

1. Correct Application of Biblical Years: Simply stated, every Jewish month consists of 30 days (based on the moon’s phases); therefore, every year contains 360 days, not 365 days that we use on the Julian or Roman calendar. Biblical months/years are based on the Jewish calendar. The Roman calendar came along thousands of years after the Jewish calendar. Time doesn’t permit explanation as to why we use the Roman calendar, except to say that Sir Robert Anderson fully realized the necessity of converting Julian years to Jewish years if he or anyone could accurately correlate precise dates in Biblical and secular history …. Days, months, years.
2. Pinpoint Identification of Exact Dates, via Meticulous Investigation of Historical Records: Once again, time/space prohibits extensive review of what he found, so I will highly condense his amazing discovery: Sir Robert Anderson calculated (with partial assistance from the Royal Observatory, Greenwich) the Julian date of King Artaxerxes edict to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem to have been March 14th, 445 BC. Furthermore, the Julian date for Jesus’s magnificent ride into Jerusalem was April 6th, 32 AD. By employing the Hebrew calendar, Sir Robert Anderson tallied 173,880 days had elapsed which is exactly 483 Jewish years!! Absolutely astounding! I repeat for emphasis: Incredible!!

Sir Robert Anderson factored in leap years and the 24 days from March 14th to April 6th. Some mathematicians/scholars determined that Anderson was two days off or so; but whether they’re right or Sir Robert was right, doesn’t matter all that much. The fact is: to calculate within two days, or two weeks, or two months, or even two years is remarkable. When you’re talking about 483 years, even a gap of two years still gives significant validation to the prophecy. Meaning that it’s not the God-given prophecy that’s a little off; rather, it might just be a slight miscalculation of what is a fairly complex system of balancing two calendars over such a long period of time.

Summary

Unless God, himself, directly inspires someone (such as the prophet Daniel), there’s absolutely no way for a man or woman to predict either the decree of Artaxerxes (some 95 years after Daniel’s vision) or the coming of the Messiah (some 483 years—Jewish calendar) years later to the year and the very day! Or, for that matter to predict anything, with or without a definitive time-frame of fulfillment, on a error-free, 100% standard of accuracy … or even 10%, which is nothing but pure luck.

There are many features that distinguish Judaism and later, Christianity, from all other world religions and philosophies. One thing is the Bible itself, authored by God, himself. Why can I or anyone make this assertion? Because of two other elements found in Scripture that simply do not exist and cannot be found in other so-called holy texts or records. One is the incredible miracles recorded in both the Old and New Testaments, many of which have been documented through archeology, recorded eye-witness accounts, secular historical records; not the least of which is the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Secondly, the hundreds of fulfilled Biblical prophecies, with equal confirmation by the above described sources.

But the greatest distinction of all is God’s plan of salvation and rescue of the entire human race: God doing for us through his Son’s death on the cross, what we can’t possibly do for ourselves: forgiveness and pardon from our sins and eternal life in Heaven.

Please, tune in next week, and we’ll look at another spectacular prophecy in Scripture, from the 26th Chapter of Leviticus of all places. A prophecy that also contains a specific number of years for its fulfillment, but one that wasn’t discovered until a few years ago. Much like it took over 1800 years for the Lord to give such precise insight to Sir Robert Anderson.

Things to Ponder
– The 70th week of Daniel’s prophecy is a whole different study, but essentially it consists of the Tribulation period that begins with the 7-year treaty orchestrated by the Antichrist, as found in Daniel 9:27.
– These precise prophecies in Daniel Chapter 9 are some of many Messianic prophecies that the Jews missed before the first advent of Jesus Christ to the earth. It is well documented, both in the Bible and historical records, that Israel and the Jews (and a few Gentiles) were anticipating the appearance of the Messiah a relatively short time before and after Jesus came to the earth. The Magi had to have known about Daniel’s prophecy; otherwise they would never have traveled hundreds of miles to bear gifts to the Messiah. Whether the Jewish scribes and religious leaders had figured out Daniel’s prophecy and chose to ignore it, or whether they hadn’t even bothered to look more closely at the prophecy, is anybody’s guess. But had they examined Daniel’s predictions and all Messianic prophecies in more detail, they would have known that Jesus Christ fulfilled every one of them.
– According to Daniel 9:26, the Messiah would appear before the destruction of the Temple, which took place in 70 AD. And that’s exactly what occurred … Jesus birth, death, and resurrection some 40 years before the Romans sacked Jerusalem–which further validates the accuracy of Daniel’s prophecy. But then thousands of Jews and Gentiles witnessed first-hand or heard first-hand from eye-witnesses of Jesus’s many miracles (such as raising Lazarus from the dead), and they still refused to believe that he was Messiah Savior. So what does it take?!

A Palestinian State? (No, say many Arabs!)

A PALESTINIAN STATE?

In today’s world, news flows from the Middle East, especially Israel, like water through a ruptured dam. United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, just returned from his 11th shuttle diplomacy trip to Israel, and plans on returning in the next few days. Although both the Israeli and Palestinian sides are showing signs that Kerry is wearing out his welcome, our administration continues its’ relentless march toward a two-state “peace agreement” solution between Israel and the Palestinians. At the core of such an arrangement is a not so hidden agenda within the framework of the US proposals that would require Israel to return to 1967 borders. To the Israelis this is unthinkable, and irony of all ironies, it is also a serious problem with the majority of the 1.5 million Israeli Arabs living in Israel!

Why would so many Arabs NOT want a Palestinian State? Isn’t that what all Arabs long for in Israel? Isn’t that the reason for past terrorist attacks on Israeli Jews? Or, the incessant demands by the Palestinian Authority headed by Mahmoud Abbas and its rival counterpart Hamas in the Gaza Strip for Palestinian rights? Or the greater majority of world opinion to end so-called Israeli settlement occupation of certain territories within Israel? What is so problematic about a Palestinian State that is mapped along what many refer to as pre-1967 borders, that are not really borders at all … in the sense of a border between the US and Mexico, or France and Germany, or even between Israel and Jordan. Rather, these internal borders are more like cease-fire lines.

A Brief History

To better understand why at least 70% of Israeli Arabs don’t want to live in/under an Arab Palestinian government, we need to take a quick refresher course in the modern history of Israel. Following the United Nations resolution and subsequent declaration of Israel’s Statehood in November, 1947 and May, 1948, respectively, the Jews had to immediately fight for the very survival of their reborn nation. Against insurmountable odds, the Jews were victorious over five Arab nations in their War of Independence of 1948. They also prevailed in the 1956 Suez conflict with Egypt.

Then, in June, 1967 one of the most amazing conflicts in military history began and ended in less than a week! To this day it is still referred to as the Six-Day War, in which Israel soundly defeated a coalition of Arab nations, and once again against staggering odds. Although Israel took the offensive in this war, they had no other choice; it was crystal clear that surrounding Arab nations, particularly Syria and Egypt, planned to attack Israel. In order to assure victory and protection against further invasion, Israel seized the following territories that had previously been under Jordanian, Syrian, or Egyptian control.

Golan Heights: A high mountainous area near Israel’s northern border with Syria … a crucial strategic location to prevent Syrian incursions in and attacks on Israel.

Gaza Strip: A fairly narrow strip of land along the southeast coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in which Jews lived alongside a majority of Arabs.

West Bank: So-called because of its location along the west bank of the Jordan River, in the east central portion of Israel. Historically and rightfully called Judea and Samaria as regions in Israel’s ancient homeland. Now occupied predominately by Palestinian Arabs.

Sinai Peninsula: The large, mostly desert southern land mass that currently separates Israel from Egypt proper.

East Jerusalem: Technically, a segment of the West Bank; but, nevertheless, still an integral and indispensable part of the entire city of Jerusalem.

All of these territories would prove vital for Israel’s defense and ultimate victory in the subsequent Yom Kippur war of 1973; in which Israel was attacked without warning on Israel’s holiest day of the year by Syria and Egypt (with other Arab allies), and would turn out to be the most deadly/costly war in Israel’s brief modern history.

Unfortunately, Israel partially bowed to international pressure exerted primarily by the United Nations and, over varying intervals of time, returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, the Gaza Strip to Egypt, and most of the West Bank to Jordan. Egypt and Jordan subsequently allowed the Gaza Strip and West Bank Arabs to govern themselves. The only sector that Israel didn’t relinquish to any degree was the Golan Heights; it was simply too dangerous to return this tactical high ground to the Syrians. For a period of time, Israel maintained a military presence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank (strictly for security purposes, i.e. to help prevent terrorist attacks), but that is gone in the Gaza Strip (2005) and present in only a small portion (percentage of land) to protect Israeli settlements in the West Bank. To be sure there are still checkpoint crossings between Israel proper and Palestinian held areas, again for security reasons.

However, the most significant of all was the Israeli decision, soon after the Six-Day War, to return East Jerusalem to Jordanian control, including the Temple Mount itself. This was a colossal concession; in fact, to many Jews then and now, a monumental mistake.

To comprehend just how painful this world-opinion induced surrender (of the Temple Mount) was to the vast majority of Jews, listen to the message delivered by Israeli Chief Army Chaplain Rabbi Shlomo Goren to the IDF paratroopers who liberated all of Jerusalem, including the beloved Western Wall in June, 1967: “Soldiers of Israel, God be with you valiant warriors! I am speaking to you from the Western Wall, remnant of our Holy Temple. The dream of all the generations has been fulfilled before our eyes. The City of God, the Temple site, the Temple Mount, and the Western Wall—symbol of the Jewish people’s messianic redemption—have been delivered this day by you, heroes of the Israel Defense Forces.”

I vividly remember watching on television battle hardened IDF soldiers weeping at the Western Wall, which is also called the Wailing Wall. They shed tears of grief over hundreds of years of oppression and defeat; but mostly tears of joy over the astounding capture of Jerusalem and rightful return of Temple Mount to the Jews. It was, as heralded by Rabbi Goren, truly an event of messianic proportion (a prophetic precursor to the imminent return of Messiah). I shed tears of joy with them at this stunning historical event, only to be filled with sorrow when the Temple Mount was relinquished back to the Arabs. It is the only edifice remaining of the walls that surrounded the magnificent Jewish Temple before the Romans destroyed most of Jerusalem in 70 AD, including the Temple.

What would have happened if the United States had allowed the Confederate states to continue with their own nation; or even more absurd—for the Confederate headquarters to occupy the eastern or southern half of Washington D.C. after losing the Civil War? Actually, Jefferson Davis and many southern constituents did want the southern states to continue with their succession from the Union even after they surrendered. Abraham Lincoln would have none of that. All southern states would return unconditionally to the Union of the United States of America; albeit with the same authority of state rights afforded to the northern states.

Concerning today’s Temple Mount, Jews are not allowed to express any gesture of worship or prayer or planned assemblies on the Temple Mount. All such activity must be confined to the Western Wall just below Temple Mount. Can you imagine that? If not, then imagine that you as an American citizen would not be permitted to set foot on the hallowed ground of the Statue of Liberty. It’s pretty much the equivalent of restrictions placed on Jews with regard to the Temple Mount, their most holy place, in the most holy city of Jerusalem, in the holy land itself.

Rest assured: One day God will change all that and return all of Jerusalem including the Temple Mount back to the Jews through their (our) Messiah! Listen to what the Lord says concerning the end times restoration of Israel … which is taking shape in Israel daily, i.e. the massive return of Jews to the reborn sovereign State of Israel.

“And I will make a covenant of peace with them, an everlasting covenant. I will give them their land and increase their numbers, and I will put my Temple among them forever. I will make my home among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. And when my Temple is among them forever, the nations will know that I am the Lord, who makes Israel holy” (Ezekiel 37: 26-28). *Note: the word holy means separate, distinct, set aside for a special purpose.

What else does God say about Jerusalem and the Temple Mount? “In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s house will be the highest of all—the most important place on earth. It will be raised above the other hills, and people from all over the world will stream there to worship. People from many nations will come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of Jacob’s God. There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.’ For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem. The Lord will mediate between peoples and will settle disputes between strong nations far away. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore” (Micah 4: 1-3, italics for emphasis).

Obstacles to a Two-State Solution

There are several divisive issues and obstacles to a peace accord between Arabs and Jews in Israel, including an independent Palestinian State within Israeli borders. But none more so than the question of Israeli control of Golan Heights and the Jordan Valley for national security reasons. And then for religious and political reasons—exclusive control of East Jerusalem by the Arabs which would, for all practical purposes, mean that Jerusalem is not Israel’s capital.

But let’s return to the secondary (yet still a very contentious matter) problem of citizenship in a newly created Palestinian State and the reasons why most Israeli Arabs don’t want this to happen, at least not according to the framework currently proposed by the United States.

First, what is the modern-day difference between an Israeli Arab and a Palestinian? An Israeli Arab is, in fact, an Israeli citizen; the majority of whom live in East Jerusalem and throughout Israel, such as Nazareth … a predominately Arab community. Palestinian Arabs are not citizens of Israel, and reside in either the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, with population of over three million. There are also tens of thousands of Palestinians who live in refugee camps in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, because those countries will not allow Palestinians to become citizens.

As mentioned in past articles on this blog site and/or information that you may have already known, Israeli Arabs have all the privileges of citizenship enjoyed by Israeli Jews, including the right to vote and, amazingly, even the opportunity of election to the Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset. Currently, of the 120 members of the Knesset, 12 are Israeli Arabs. This phenomenal fact alone should silence all those who seek to disenfranchise and delegitimize Israel by calling them an apartheid state and seeking to boycott their livelihood and sanction their every move. Many citizens of surrounding Arab countries have few or limited civil rights, let alone the advantage to serve in their government.

Who knows exactly what (how many) issues must be resolved before a final roadmap to peace is finished? Who can predict exactly what boundaries will encompass a Palestinian State; if, indeed, that is even possible in the first place? Who could possibly imagine that Israel would divide its capital by granting total sovereignty of East Jerusalem to the Palestinians or seriously jeopardize its security by yielding the Golan Heights to Syria? But there is one thing that Israel seems prepared to do up front, in response to non-stop Palestinian and international demands, including US plans, that Israeli West Bank settlements be evacuated (after the fashion of the Gaza Strip extradition).

From an article in an Israeli daily newspaper, Ma’ariv, we read that Israel has responded to the American proposals, by suggesting that Israeli Arab communities currently within Israel and under Jewish sovereignty be transferred to the Palestinian Authority as part of any future land swap; which, in turn, would return Jewish settlements of the West Bank to total Israeli sovereignty. Actually, this idea is not all that new, but it tends to fit with future boundaries suggested by Secretary John Kerry.

And as Palestinian journalist, Khaled Abu Toameh writes in his article for Gatestone Institute, “It was hard this week to find even one Israeli Arab who publicly supported the proposal.” Khaled goes on to say, “Arab Knesset members … do not want to wake up in the morning and discover that they are citizens of a Palestinian state. It is much easier for them to accuse Israel of racism than to admit that they do not want to be part of a Palestinian state.”

At face value that seems and sounds incredible—that Palestinians wouldn’t want to be governed by their own people. But after further review, it’s all too practical and easy to grasp. Pretty much ever since Israel became a nation, and especially since 1967 when hundreds of thousands more Arabs suddenly became citizens of Israel, those Israeli Arabs have been far better off than their Palestinian brothers living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Although there’s still a lot of hostility emanating from Israeli Arabs toward Israel, they understand that Israeli citizenship affords them much more freedom, democracy, a higher standard of living, movement throughout Israel, more places to shop for and buy the things they want and need; in short, a better way of life. The last thing they want is an abruptly changed life in a Palestinian State, controlled by a Palestinian government that could just as quickly take away many of the privileges they currently enjoy as Israeli citizens.

The Palestinian journalist goes on to say, “The Palestinians have their own parliament in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But this parliament, known as the Palestinian Legislative Council, has been paralyzed since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. In most Arab countries, parliament members who dare to criticize their rulers often find themselves sitting at home or behind bars.” And I might add to Khaled’s astute observations: An Israel Arab Knesset member is free to criticize his/her own government (and often does) without fear of any reprisal. They can return to their home after a hard day at the Knesset, and start all over again the following morning.

A Personal Experience

I have seen first-hand this inexplicable, almost bizarre dichotomy between the real-life benefits experienced by so many Arabs with Israeli citizenship, juxtaposed with their historical (ancient) anger toward Israel that (irrationally and illogically) simultaneously floods their heart and soul.

On the last day or next to last day of a trip to Israel that my sister and I made in March, 2006, we returned from the Western Wall and Temple Mount to our hotel in Jerusalem via a taxi. The taxi was driven by an Israeli Arab who I estimated to be about 63 years of age.

As with many Israeli taxi drivers, he was talkative and asked what brought us to Israel. My response was that I was doing research for a book (what at that time was my first book, a novel, called O Israel, and published in 2007). One thing led to another and I asked him whether he and his people the Arabs were better off under Jordanian rule or Palestinian authority or under Jewish government. I’ll never forget his answer. He replied that things were definitely better living in Israel (as an Israeli citizen) than under the old Jordanian government and (implying) under the PLO in the West Bank. He cited such things as jobs, schools, goods, freedom to move around, and opportunities in general. But then he abruptly halted his modest praise of this freedom in Israel, and said emphatically (a close paraphrase), “The Jews are wrong. This is still our land. They took it from us.”

The fact is that, with the exception of the aforementioned regions captured by Israel in 1967 (most of which were given back to Palestinian functional control), Israel has not taken any land from the Arabs. The Jews purchased nearly all the land where they currently reside, despite the evidence that it was given to them by the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and again by the UN in 1947. For that matter, any land captured in war, even by means of aggressive expansion has historically been conceded to the conqueror. None of Israel’s wars had anything to do with a deliberate attempt to annex more property and/or displace Palestinians. They were all conflicts of self-defense and national survival. Yet, they still returned most of the land gained through the blood of their soldiers and civilians. Think for a moment about our own Revolutionary War against the British. We gave not a single acre back to England; instead we went Westward Ho and accumulated millions of more acres all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Yes, the views expressed by our taxi driver exactly mirror the mindset of the Arabs in Israel, even the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (if they would admit it): We know we’re much better off as citizens of Israel, but they are still our eternal enemy.

Things to Ponder
– The bottom line is that the Jews long for peace in Israel, their God-given ancient land. They are willing to make major concessions for this peace; indeed, just to be recognized as a people and State. Not so with the Arabs: they ultimately want a piece of Israel here, a piece there, until all the pieces fit into a map that says Palestine, instead of Israel.
– Ultimately, the only possible way to change such thinking is to first change one’s heart. And the only one who can do that is Jesus Christ, our Jewish Messiah to the entire world, including the Arabs. Which is why he is called Sar Shalom, The Prince of Peace. Only Christ can (and will) bring real peace to a weary, war-torn world full of hate and grief.
– Earlier in this article, I quoted from the prophet, Micah, “…They will hammer their swords into plowshares…” This is one of the rare occurrences in the Old Testament where two prophets were given virtually the same prophetic words. Who is the other prophet who wrote these same words? Can you find the chapter and verse? Actually, it is that Biblical reference which is more often quoted than Micah.

Don’t miss the next series of articles beginning with a spectacular, but lesser known, prophecy from the book of Daniel.

The Heart & Soul of Israel

THE REAL HEART & SOUL OF ISRAEL

I’d like to share with you a remarkable story that comes to us from Israel. My guess is that not too many have heard about this event; it isn’t an incident that would necessarily garner major headlines. Actually, I should say: It’s a story that mainstream media doesn’t ordinarily broadcast, because it doesn’t fit the more suitable criteria of a situation that just might cast Israel in an unfavorable light. Yet it is an episode that poignantly characterizes the very heart and soul of Israel. It is one that defines Israel more accurately than does the incessant but unfounded demonization of this tiny country—as exhibited by the resurgence of Anti-Semitism throughout the world, and as touched on in last week’s article regarding the growing hostility of organizations and nations toward Israel, via boycotts and sanctions.

A few months ago family members of a one-year old child by the name of Amal Haniyeh, brought her to Schneider Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Israel (near Tel-Aviv) for emergency medical treatment of a life-threatening illness. Previously another member of this same family had been admitted to an Israeli medical center, Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel for care of a serious heart problem. Alright then, we have two situations in which two members of the same family were treated at Israeli hospitals. What’s so unique or unusual about these circumstances? Why are they even newsworthy? As you might have already suspected, they are, indeed, a kind of Paul Harvey journalism, “Now you know the rest of the story.”

Let’s examine the noteworthy connections that make this story so newsworthy.

First: Amal Haniyeh is a Palestinian Arab who lives in the Gaza Strip.

Second: Beginning August 17, 2005, Jewish citizens were completely expelled from Gaza on the orders of then Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon. In just six days, hundreds of Jewish families were uprooted from houses they had lived in for decades, and forcibly relocated to other parts of Israel. Purpose of this wholesale evacuation was an unfortunate capitulation to Palestinian demands that they alone had the right to occupy the Gaza Strip. Instead of converting and making good use of vacant synagogues and other structures, the Palestinians destroyed a great many Jewish buildings.

Third: As expected, following Israeli evacuations, the Gaza Strip was completely taken over by the terrorist affiliation called Hamas, which still rules in Gaza to this day.

Fourth: The recognized leader of Hamas is Ismail Haniyeh.

Fifth: Among other venomous threats against his sworn enemy Israel, Ismail Haniyeh has described Israel as, “a cancerous tumor that must be removed and uprooted.” He has supervised the launching of thousands of rockets from Gaza into Israel, killing Jewish men, woman and children, and inflicting a great deal of property damage very close to the hospital that treated his granddaughter Amal.

Sixth: Yes, you read that correctly: Amal is the granddaughter of one, Ismail Haniyeh! During the exact time that little Amal was receiving life-saving treatment at Schneider Children’s Hospital, her grandfather Ismail boasted that Hamas’ newly acquired long-range missiles could reach Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities.

And that, my friends, is the whole story. But there’s more!

Just a couple of weeks ago, in the aftermath of a massive winter storm that struck Israel and adjoining territories, Ismail Haniyeh again made the news. So enormous was this storm, that many dubbed it, “Snowmageddon” and “Snopocalypse.” Several feet of snow caused rivers to overflow, highways to be shut down, multiple auto accidents, tens of thousands to lose electricity and heat; and, to the groans of parents but to the cheers of school children, five successive snow days!

Israel’s Response

In the midst of Israel’s shutdown and hardships created by this monstrous storm, what would be a logical, reasonable response to the predicament of their Palestinian “neighbors” in the Gaza Strip … neighbors led by a man who has labeled (libeled) Israel a “cancerous tumor that must be removed and uprooted?” What would be your response? Would it be feasible to say, “Too bad for them? What are we supposed to do? Help them … you’ve got to be kidding. In Israel, we have no lights, no heat, and no open roadways to get to stores and buy essential supplies. We can’t even get out of our apartment.” Israeli emergency infrastructure had all it could do to bring relief to its own people. Could you imagine anyone blaming them for ignoring Gaza Strip Palestinians, most of whom would celebrate if a Jew froze to death during the storm?

But that is not what happened. Primarily through the IDF, Israel provided gas, heat, electricity, and other humanitarian aid to thousands of Gazans, many of whom had to be evacuated from their homes. Assistance was also offered to Palestinians in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria). Even Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh asked for emergency assistance, which must have been very difficult for him … to swallow enough pride so that his people could be helped. Yet, while touring the most affected areas in the Gaza Strip, he made the statement, “Gaza survived two wars (with Israel) and it will walk out of this.” Amazing! Such gratitude! Despite the suffering of his people, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take another swing at his sworn enemy, Israel.

And there’s more, much more. Many Syrian soldiers and civilians wounded in Syria’s civil war have been treated and cared for in Israeli hospitals. There are scores of other unilateral and unconditional acts of Israeli kindness and generosity toward those in desperate need, both allies and enemies. Israel is normally the first nation to spring into action by sending emergency relief teams and supplies to those suffering from earthquakes, tsunamis (Indonesia), and other natural disasters.

That is the heart of Israel. They walk the talk. In fact, the long-standing Jewish tradition of rendering help or imparting a chesed (grace, favor, generous deed) or mitzvah (charitable act) to both friends and strangers means that they don’t brag about it. They just do it. Moreover, humanitarian aid such as that given to Gaza Strip and West Bank Palestinians doesn’t come from ulterior motives, such as appeasement or reciprocity (I’ll do this for you if you do this for me). How could there be an underhanded motive if you’ve already been evicted from all of the Gaza Strip and the vast majority of the West Bank? What is there to gain?

Am I implying that Israel is perfect? Of course not … any more than this great nation called the United States of America is perfect … morally, spiritually, politically, economically, socially, or any other words/ways with an “ly” suffix. Soon after his first election, no less than our own President Obama set the record straight (concerning America’s perceived perfection) by apologizing to the Muslim nations in particular and the world in general for America’s arrogance! Well, that’s a rabbit trail in the making, so I best return to the matter at hand.

But, sadly, we also see the reflection of the heart of Israel’s neighbors … a heart of hatred and hypocrisy. It’s all take and no give. It’s, “We’ll take everything you give us, but don’t expect anything in return.” Except, there is one thing we will continue to give you: Never-ending turmoil, trouble, testing, and trials.

Israel’s Destiny

In today’s hostile world, Israel’s humanitarian kindness and generosity validates the amazing fulfillment of their prophetic destiny, one that embodies the very purpose for Israel’s existence and selection by God: to be a source of light and blessing to the Gentile nations. The ultimate source of the source (from and through Israel) is none other than the Messiah. In our day we’re witnessing the prophetic expression of Old Testament moral standards of excellence expected from Israel. “Then this message came to Zechariah from the Lord: ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other’” (Zechariah 7: 8-10).

It is a long overdue return to the glory days of Israel before the time when, “Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing. They made their hearts as hard as stone, so they could not hear the instructions or the messages that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had sent them by his Spirit through the earlier prophets … As with a whirlwind, I scattered them among the distant nations, where they lived as strangers” (Zechariah 7: 11-14).

In these end times prophecies–fulfillment of which began with the spectacular, miraculous rebirth of Israel as a sovereign nation in 1948 and rapid return of Jews to their God-given land–we also learn that, “…People from nations and cities around the world will travel to Jerusalem. The people of one city will say to the people of another, ‘Come with us to Jerusalem to ask the Lord to bless us. Let’s worship the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I’m determined to go. Many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies and to ask for his blessing’” (Zechariah 8: 20-22).

And another instruction/promise to Israel: “Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon” (Isaiah 58:10).

And, yet another: “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance” (Isaiah 60:1-3).

But before that can happen, “The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem to buy back those in Israel who have turned from their sins, says the Lord” (Isaiah 59:20). And, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Be just and fair to all. Do what is right and good, for I am coming soon to rescue you and to display my righteousness among you’” (Isaiah 56:1).

Followed by, “On that day a fountain will be opened for the dynasty of David and for the people of Jerusalem, a fountain to cleanse them from all their sins and impurity” (Zechariah 13:1).

These and many other similar passages in Scripture clearly indicate that the destinies of Gentile nations all over this earth are inextricably bound with Israel’s destiny. Furthermore, Israel’s glorious future is exclusively connected to and contingent upon her final rescue (at Armageddon) and redemption (spiritual restoration) that only Messiah can bring.

The Heart of a First Century Jew

To better understand the love and compassion God has for Israel and why Israel’s divine inheritance has been delayed for some two thousand years, let’s look back to a first century Jewish Pharisee, steeped in the Law of Moses. This man was extraordinarily zealous in his defense of Judaism; to the extreme of persecuting and killing those who would dare believe that a recently crucified Jewish Rabbi had been miraculously raised from the dead and had freely given to Israel (and the whole world) a brand new and better covenant between God and man, the covenant of Grace. A grace that would be poured out on all of mankind and would bring forgiveness of sins and everlasting life through this one man, Jesus of Nazareth.

This Jewish Pharisee named Saul experienced a radical transformation through a spectacular encounter with Jesus, while on the road to Damascus to arrest more Christians. Saul’s name was changed to Paul and he would live the rest of his life and then die in the service of the one he knew beyond all doubt was the Messiah. He would teach and heal and strengthen and encourage those very Christians whom he had sought to destroy. His conversion and life would represent and define the incredible difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant which was made possible by the shed blood of Messiah Jesus and his mighty resurrection from the dead. Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he would go on to write most of the New Testament.

In one of these epistles we find an astounding affirmation from Paul, one that would personally convey his deep longing for Israel’s salvation. Paul had the heart of Christ and he boldly expressed the unparalleled magnitude of this passionate desire for the salvation of his people. Listen to Paul’s stunning statement: “With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them” (Romans 9: 1-3).

Can you imagine that? I can’t. To me, it is utterly unfathomable. How many of us would be willing to give up everlasting life in Heaven so that someone else could be there in our place? Or putting it more bluntly like Paul did: How many of us would be willing to be cursed, which is another way of saying cut off from God forever in hell, if that’s what it took for someone else to live forever in heaven? Of course it doesn’t work that way; but Paul, nevertheless, was sincerely and emphatically serious about offering his eternal position in Christ (forgiveness of sins and everlasting life) if that could save his fellow Jews.

Paul goes on to explain the heritage of the Jews: “They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshipping him and receiving his wonderful promises. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen” (Romans 9:4-5).

Later Paul expounds on why the Jewish people have yet to accomplish the purpose (then and now) for which they were born and chosen by God. He writes: “What does all this mean? Even through the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path. God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said (then Paul quotes Isaiah 8:14), “I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced” (Romans 9:30-33). In the context of these verses and other similar passages, the stone or rock is none other than Jesus Christ.

Paul reemphasizes his passion: “Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God” (Romans 10:1-4).

Later Paul summarizes by asking a rhetorical question, “I ask, then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin. No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning…” (Romans 11: 1-2).

Paul’s premise is reinforced by hundreds of Old Testament prophecies and promises that Israel will one day be both physically and spiritually restored. The national rebuilding—return of the exiles to Israel—has been underway for decades; as has the spiritual restoration. Although the spiritual renewal lags behind the physical, it is rapidly catching up… as confirmed by the thousands of Jews all over the world who have embraced Yeshua (Jesus) as Messiah, especially since 1967, when many of the Messianic outreach ministries began.

When Paul wrote Romans, the Jewish people were (and still are) only partially blind. Slowly, one Jewish salvation at a time, they are opening their eyes to see who the Messiah really is. In the first century a few thousand Jews “found the favor of God they were looking for so earnestly” (Romans 11:7)—meaning individual salvation through Messiah Jesus. Today there are a few more … actually many more. Not since the first century have so many thousands of Jews all over the world turned to Christ. This is a phenomena that can’t easily be dismissed out-of-hand, by either Gentile Christians or by the majority of Jews, whether secular or orthodox.

Unity in Diversity

We see a renewed enthusiasm among both religious and secular Jews for the coming of Messiah, but with a “misdirected zeal” and understanding of who the Messiah really is, or what he has already done, or what he will do when he appears (again). We see a monumental effort towards unity among a people who have returned to Israel from nations all over the world, speaking different languages, harboring various interests, goals and dreams. We examine the composition of the current 33rd Knesset Parliament headed by Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, a leading member of the prevailing Likud party. We look at the unlikely coalition with Yair Lapid, leader of the Yesh Atid party (meaning, “There is a future”) whose main platform is that all Jews including the religious students of the yeshivas must serve in the IDF. Yair Lapid also wants more emphasis on “civil” life in Israel such as civil marriages being recognized by the State.

We are intrigued that Naftali Bennet, head of the HaBayit HaYehudi party (which means “The Jewish Home”) has also joined with the Likud and Yisreal Beiteinu parties to form a very functional coalition of the current Israeli government. Naftali’s main platform objectives are the building of more Jewish settlements and renewed enthusiasm for Zionism, which is simply the rightful return of Jews to their homeland.

In the midst of all this diversity, we see the wonder of so much unity and desire to once again be the people that God wanted them to be. As Christians (both Gentiles and Jews) who have been transformed by God’s grace through the atoning sacrifice of our Jewish Messiah, we long for Israel to understand that their lofty aspirations can only be achieved through the Messiah. But not a Messiah that fits any number of speculative, divergent views and images depending on whether a Jew (or even a non-Jew) is orthodox, conservative, reformed, liberal, or secular in their belief. Rather, with objective recognition of the true Messiah, who historically and precisely fulfilled hundreds of prophecies about him found in the Old Testament.

Unfortunately, the final acceptance and acknowledgment of the true Messiah will come only after great hardship … called the Great Tribulation in the New Testament and the Time of Jacob’s troubles in the Old Testament. At the brink of utter collapse and destruction, the Jews as individuals and as a nation will finally recognize who Messiah really is. Here’s what will happen on that day: “Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the family of David and on the people of Jerusalem. They will look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as for an only son….” (Zechariah 12:10).

And then they will look up to know their redemption is near, and they will say, “Baruch haba, beshem Adonai”… (blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Matthew 23:39).

No one but God can make so many bad things turn into so many good ones. So, we’ll close with one last magnificent example of what God will do despite Israel’s stumbling over the Rock of their salvation. This collapse is NOT irreversible. Here’s why: “Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it” (Romans 11: 11-12, italics and bold for emphasis). Notice, it doesn’t say “if” but “when” they accept God’s offer of salvation, which is none other than God’s Son, Yeshua haMashiach.

And so we watch and wait for the glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. And while we wait, we encourage each other to, Sha’alu Shalom Yerushalayim, Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem. In doing so, we pray for the heart and soul of Israel.

Things to Ponder
How about a question with a riddle attached to it? As follows:

Where specifically on the earth will Messiah (Jesus) return? Hint: you won’t find it in the Book of Revelation. Another hint: If there was such a book of the Bible called, “The Acts of Zechariah,” there you will find the answer! You will find the answer in the first and the last chapters of this non-existence book, and in that order.

Who can solve the riddle and answer the question?

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (of Israel)

BOYCOTT, DIVESTMENT, AND SANCTIONS (BDS)

Recently, The American Studies Association (ASA) issued an ominous proclamation that called for a boycott of Israeli universities. There are about 5,000 members of this influential organization comprised of scholars and educators who are demanding that American universities cease all interaction and cooperation with Israeli educational institutions. Although the ASA acknowledged that they have never boycotted any other country before, their president’s response to the Jewish Anti-Defamation League was: “One has to start somewhere.”

You read that right … that’s exactly what he said! Such a well-educated, scholarly, profound, and humanitarian reason for joining the increasing number of organizations and nations the world over in the growing BDS movement! Nor did the ASA President, Curtis Marez, dispute the clear evidence that other countries, including many in the Middle East, have far worse human rights violations … Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia, just to name a few. In fact: Unless Israel’s strategy of self-defense and protection of its citizens against terrorist attacks from within its borders and from surrounding countries constitutes a violation of human rights, there is no such thing in Israel.

Fortunately, a few American universities condemned the ASA’s official boycott of Israel … such as John Hopkins University, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Texas. But that’s not nearly enough opposition to counteract this mindless, illogical, unreasonable, and hateful animosity toward Israel. Later in this article, we’ll talk about why this boycott (and others like it) are utterly irrational.

Will this boycott adversely affect Israeli educational centers, or inhibit research, or severely limit Israel’s accomplishments in various fields of learning? I seriously doubt it. For example: Although the Jews comprise only two/tenths of one percent of the world’s population, they have been awarded an astonishing 20% of the 850 Nobel Prizes handed out since 1901. There was a justified knee-jerk reaction from Jews all over the world. But, I don’t think the Jewish people will lose much sleep over this boycott, for fear of never again experiencing a life-changing scientific break-through such as the discovery of blood types A,B,O, that revolutionized the understanding of blood composition, transfusions, and genetics. And this was only one of hundreds of remarkable contributions that Jews have made to international economics, science, literature, medicine, politics, education, and religion.

Any real loss will be the ASA’s and American education. It’s tantamount to what happened in Germany during the rise of Hitler’s Third Reich. Jewish scientists, economists, entrepreneurs, educators, inventors, doctors were either exiled from Germany or rounded up, interned, shipped to concentration camps, and eventually murdered. And the ultimate irony is that Germany very well may have won the war or at least prolonged it for another 2-4 years, had they not boycotted, divested, and sanctioned tens of thousands of Jewish intellectuals. No, indeed; Israel will not suffer any educational deprivation or deficiency as a result of this boycott. What is significant, however, is the mindset behind the whole thing. As the saying goes, “It’s the thought that counts.” Only in this case (BDS), with a bad connotation.

No matter that Israel is the ONLY democracy in the entire Middle East; one that allows Israeli Arabs to vote, own property and businesses, move freely throughout the country, and even serve in Israel’s parliament (the Knesset). By all means, disregard the stark reality that Arab/Muslim nations surrounding Israel have no such thing as a republic, or democratic, or even a parliamentary style government. Most of these Muslim controlled Arab administrations suppress their own people and deny many basic liberties commonly afforded in Israel, the United States and a few other nations of the free world.

Why Israel? Did the ASA throw darts at a map of the world and hit Israel? Did they draw names from a hat? Was it alphabetical? Hardly. Yet their rationale for targeting Israel is no less randomly absurd than playing musical chairs or drawing straws. They couldn’t very well start with the USA because that would mean American universities boycotting each other. Yet one of the stated reasons for boycotting Israel was, “U.S. military and other support for Israel.” Other reasons given were violation of international law and U.N. resolutions. They dared not select one of the Arab countries as the ASA would have then been classified as Islamophobic. Besides, which of the Arab nations that specialize in human rights violations would they choose? It would be a difficult choice, because there are so many of them. Alas, the poor ASA didn’t know where to begin, so they “started” with Israel!

But, in the horrible reality of it all, Israel would be the natural place for the ASA to initiate their first official boycott. Why? Because many nations of the world routinely isolate Israel when they feel like flexing their BDS muscles. Since only a handful of countries support Israel (and even then, not all the time), the ASA and other like-minded organizations or nations boycotting Israel would generate the backing (blessings) from all of their anti-Israel comrades. It’s no different from a fashion trend that sweeps a country from time to time. Now days it is contemporarily fashionable to buy and wear BDS T-shirts against Israel.

Which leads us to another source of BDS, this time in the form of sanctions: The United Nations. Which country would you suspect has been the target of the greatest number of UN resolutions (sanctions), by far? Is it China, North Korea, the Sudan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Iran? Not even close. It’s Israel … of course. A few months ago one United Nations employee—who thought her microphone had been turned off—blurted out what she thought was the never-ending, ridiculous (she used a four letter word) stream of sanctions against Israel. Her meaning and implications were unmistakably clear: UN sanctions against Israel had deteriorated into a senseless irresponsible game; albeit a reckless gamesmanship that can be deadly when taken seriously.

BDS … Where did it begin?

So exactly what is BDS? First, it is an actual organization or movement that some 171 Palestinian organizations initiated in July, 2005 against Israel. In theory it is based on a mindset that characterizes Israel as an apartheid state, modeled after the (former) apartheid government of South Africa. As the very name suggests, the purpose of BDS is to deprive Israel of international trade, recognition, and sovereignty. It aims to hit Israel where it hurts … economically, politically, culturally, educationally, socially; in short, to delegitimize Israel as a member of the family of nations.

Boycott? We all know how it works. Just stop buying goods from a retailer, a conglomerate, or even an entire country forever, or at least until the boycotted entity ceases and desist from doing whatever you want them to stop doing. Concerning the Palestinian Arabs and most Muslim nations, they want Israel to cease existing and for the Jews to stop breathing. Or, as with ASA, stop the exchange of ideas and good will between like-minded organizations. Whether for good or for bad, boycotts can be an effective tool to hamstring a company or country.

Divestment? The opposite of investment. Similar to boycotting only carrying it a step farther by overt actions, such as withdrawing or selling of stocks in a company or refusing to buy stock, or to consider any kind of support. Conversely, by supporting and promoting a competitor. Even more harshly, to deliberately discredit a company or nation with public derogatory and inflammatory rhetoric, whether true or not.

Sanctions? We all know what that means. My article two weeks ago (Let’s Make a Deal) contained a great deal of reference to sanctions against Iran. I’m all for them; if, that is, sanctions are used for the right reasons and justifiably against the proper targets such as a rogue company or nation that understands only tough language and actions … so they will stand down from their malevolent intentions of harming a competitor or killing their rivals.

So, what is the big problem with BDS? First we must consider the source: dozens of Palestinian groups that have banded together to humiliate and weaken Israel through more “peaceful” tactics. In the last two decades or so, Muslims in general and Palestinians in particular have switched tactics from hot wars and terrorism to a war of words which even includes rewriting both Jewish and Arab history. The basic premise, however, is nothing new. At its core is pure propaganda with a deceitful premise: the bigger the lie you tell, and the more often you tell it, and the louder you shout it … the more people will believe it to be true.

Because the vast majority of Palestinian Arabs are sworn enemies of Israel, the BDS phenomena shouldn’t surprise those of us who support the existence and well-being of Israel. However, what is both amazing and alarming is the number of people, organizations, and nations who have jumped on the BDS band-wagon without cause, without knowing the facts, without what any reasonable person would consider a rational and logical purpose or motive.

BDS Equals Anti-Semitism

But then, that’s what both the ancient and modern definition of Anti-Semitism is: “Don’t bother me with the facts. I’ll hate Israel and persecute the Jews if I want to. I don’t need a reason … just because they’re Jews is cause enough.” BDS is simply a more subtle form of Anti-Semitism, an irrational hostility toward a people for no other reason than they were born; and then have the perceived audacity to want a safe place to live on this earth in harmony with their neighbors. But in the land given to them by God, himself and later approved by the United Nations in 1947; although the God-given deed to Israel is reason enough. God doesn’t need UN approval!

Hatred and anger are legitimate emotions. They are warranted if directed against something that is truly wrong, evil, and destructive. Take sin for example. The Bible is crystal clear about God’s opinion of and reaction to sin: He hates it. It’s a righteous anger that is pure, justified, and necessary. We’re not talking about hating the individual; rather, despising the behavior of the person who murders someone, or who lies to us or about us, or steals from us. Being against something is an appropriate part of life; if whatever we oppose could and would harm us by distorting the truth of who we are, what we believe, and seeking to destroy us if we don’t agree with them. Hence, a righteous anger expressed through boycotts, divestment, sanctions, and (if necessary) preemptive or punitive military action is understood and accepted as being totally rational and reasonable; if, for example, the object of this retaliatory response were terrorists who flew planes into the Twin Towers of New York City or a nation developing enriched uranium for the sole purpose of wiping Israel from the face of the map.

Which makes Anti-Semitism or BDS totally irrational, illogical, unreasonable, unfounded, and unfathomable. It is the ultimate display of bigotry; an intolerant jealous loathing of people because of the way they look, or where they live, or how they worship, or … the list goes on.

As indicated, the BDS movement is gaining a lot of followers. From individuals such as Roger Waters of the rock group Pink Floyd and world-renown physicist, Stephen Hawking, to the recent efforts of the entire European Union (with the blessing of its leader, Catherine Ashton) to initiate BDS against Israel for construction of settlements in the West Bank. Or Ireland’s BDS against Israel by placing yellow stickers on Israeli products that read, “For justice in Palestine, Boycott Israel.” Or Canada’s largest Protestant denomination, The United Church of Canada supporting the world-wide BDS movement. In response the “Jewish Tribune” a publication of the B’nai Birth Canada Jewish organization stated, “The fact is that a Christian organization, which should appreciate the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Jewish people’s return to the Holy Land, has instead chosen to join common cause with those who seek the very destruction of the Jewish State.”

This is also true of a couple of large American mainstream Protestant churches in the United States. Shame on them. I can tell you one thing for sure: they haven’t read their Bible. Or worse: If they have read the hundreds of Bible passages that foretell the physical and spiritual restoration of Israel and the dangerous risk for those who oppose Israel (when they oppose Israel they oppose God), then their BDS against Israel is nothing short of defying God himself.

For example, Roger Waters seems completely oblivious to the atrocities in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen (to mention just a few countries). Instead is he obsessed by what he thinks is an apartheid regime in Israel. Moreover, it’s all too evident that Waters (and many others with the same mentality) simply doesn’t want to be bothered with the truth and reality of what is actually going on in Israel. Which is the ultimate symptom and expression of prejudice and bias: “I’ve made up my mind, so don’t confuse me with all those facts.”

All anyone needs to do is to take some time (an hour or so) to look up the definition of apartheid, then get on-line to read about the specific things that an apartheid government engages in (such as no voting rights for blacks in South Africa) to demonstrate discrimination-like behavior. For that matter, a citizen of the United States doesn’t need to look half way around the world; just take a couple of hours to read about the civil rights movement in this country in the 1960s. Finally, to compare this evidence to exactly what is happening in Israel and determine if Israel is engaged in this kind of segregation. But, if you don’t have the time or want to take the time to do this research, then please take my word for it (and the word of others who know what’s really happening in Israel): There is no evidence, whatsoever, that the Israeli government is apartheid or is engaging in apartheid-like behavior.

In fact, it’s just the opposite. Israel extends liberties to its Arab citizens that these same Arabs wouldn’t be given under the governments (regimes) of Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc. And if someone wants to refer to the existence of Israeli checkpoints and border crossings or the security wall between the West Bank and Israel as an example of segregation, don’t. It won’t hold water. Sure a wall and some barriers exist, but for the sole purpose of preventing terrorists from entering Israel and detonating bombs as they did so often before the wall was erected, leading to the deaths of thousands of Israelis. These security structures are no different from the border fence between US and Mexico or certain border crossings found all over the world. With one major exception: Illegal immigrants from Mexico don’t cross the border for the sole purpose of killing Americans. Most of them just want a job … a better life. But the terrorist Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip don’t want jobs in Israel. They want to kill the Jews.

Then there’s the May, 2012 incident involving world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking. He withdrew his commitment to attend a “President’s Conference” in Israel, and did so “based on advice he received from Palestinian academics.” These various academic groups were affiliated with the BDS movement. Yet Mr. Hawking had visited and spoken in countries like Iran and China without any direct or indirect reference to or thoughts about human rights violations in those two nations. From what I’ve read and heard about Mr. Hawking, he is not political and certainly not an activist; however, when it comes to Israel he suddenly and inexplicably becomes politically correct (according to BDS definitions).

Summary Observations

Nowhere in Scripture does God command us to “love” the nation of Israel, as such. Any love that we possess and display for the land of Israel and the Jewish people must be from the heart … willingly. But he does tell us to support the Jews (in whatever way we can), and he issues stern warnings for those who oppose Israel. The Lord does instruct us to, “…love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5). If we love God, we will love the things that God loves, and one of them is Israel. Our love for God is primarily a response to his great love for us. He didn’t love us because he created us. He created us, because he first loved us. As the Bible says, he knew us before he even laid the foundation of the world. So before you and I were ever born, God knew us and loved us.

There’s really only two basic things that God expects in return: (1) to accept the awesome sacrifice that God’s Son made (death on the cross) and to receive Jesus as our personal savior. This sacrifice was the ultimate expression and confirmation of God’s love for every human being. It was necessary because God is a holy God and there’s no way we can spend eternity with him unless our sins are forgiven. And the only means of a complete pardon is to simply accept what Christ did for us; something that we couldn’t possibly do —save ourselves from sin and the guilt of that sin. No amount of good works or effort or innate worth can erase the ugly consequences and stain of the wrong things we’ve done.

(2) Acknowledge and respect the very people through whom God chose to bring Messiah’s salvation and light to the world … the Jews. And, of course, the land God chose to accomplish his magnificent plan of redemption for the human race. Both of these expectations are met by simply trusting and believing in God and his Son. When we do that, then we enthusiastically want to love God and support the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In fact, that is one of the actual names of God … how he was (and still is) known to the world. He said, “I AM The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” (Exodus 3:15).

Things to Ponder
– Consider taking the time to read Chapters 9, 10, & 11 of the book of Romans … for a comprehensive overview of the Jewish people’s history and future as it relates to the Good News of salvation.
– Do you know of any other organizations or countries or individuals who support the BDS movement?
– What are some things we can do to show our appreciation and support for Israel and the Jewish people?

The Wonder Of It All … Birth of the Child!

THE WONDER OF IT ALL

We interrupt our weekly blog article with a very special announcement: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” (Isaiah 9: 6-7).

This magnificent prophecy from the Old Testament book of Isaiah promised Israel and all people of the earth that the Messiah would come to this earth as a baby … a child is born to us. That he would be given to the human race by his Father … a son is given to us. We sing about him, “What child is this….” What makes this child so exceptional, so exclusive, so incomparable, so one-of-a kind?

First, this awesome child was born to us; this son was given to us. That means the whole world. Unlike any other child ever born, this child belongs to every person who has ever lived on the earth. In order to be the Son of Man (for all mankind) this child was not conceived by a biological father; rather he was conceived by the Holy Spirit to a virgin named Mary. Thus, the child began as a miracle and the miracle of his birth, death, and resurrection continues to this very day.

Next, the Father who gives this (his) Son is none other than, “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies” also translated, “The Lord of Hosts.” The title in Hebrew is: Adonai Tzva’ot. Why do we know that this special child was a real person, a human being as opposed to an angel or just a spirit? Because he was to be born … meaning through natural childbirth of a woman. Why do we know this son is also divine? Because he will be called (given the name and all the attributes that go with that name), Mighty God and Everlasting Father.

But we also see that this child will be called Wonderful Counselor, which is further proof of his divine origin and nature. You might ask how the term Wonderful Counselor confirms the child/son to be divine.

As one line from a popular Christmas song goes, “What a wonderful time of the year.” We’ve all used the word wonderful, and we all have a pretty good idea of what it means. But I looked it up in Webster’s Dictionary just to reinforce its meaning. Webster’s defines wonderful as, “Exciting wonder, marvelous, astonishing, unusually good …” The shorter version of wonderful is wonder or wondrous which is defined as, “exciting amazement or admiration” and “effective … far beyond anything previously known or anticipated.”

A Wonderful Wonder

Wonderful and wondrous are adjectives that modify and enrich the description of a very special person, place, or thing. What time of the year is this? It’s a wonderful time…. But the word wonder is also a noun (more often used) which means, “cause of astonishment, rapt attention at something awesomely mysterious or new to one’s experience.” Such as the Seven Wonders of the World.

In this passage from Isaiah, the Hebrew word translated wonderful in English means considerably more than just an enhanced description of the child … marvelous or astonishing. In the context of this stunning prophetic announcement, Wonderful (Counselor) combines the essence of both Wonder and Wonderful, (both adjective and noun); which results in an extraordinary fusion of the subject itself (the child) with the awesome majestic attributes that this Son will possess. Thus, as used in this passage and elsewhere in the Old Testament it conveys the supernatural (such as Judges 13:18). In fact, the Complete Jewish Bible renders the phrase: “Wonder of a Counselor.” Can you see the remarkable synthesis of Wonder and Wonderful? It could also be expressed as, A Wonderful Wonder! Moreover, the context clearly refers to the Messiah. Who else could the child be?

And this Messiah is both man (natural birth but from a supernatural conception) and God (Mighty God … a term applied to the original name of God (YHWH … Yahweh) as first given to Moses. Then the name, Everlasting Father, says it all. It’s the same concept as contained in another name for both God and Messiah: Alpha & Omega, or The Beginning and the End.

And not to forget Prince of Peace. Same thing with this wonderful title: in Hebrew the term is Sar-Shalom. The underlying meaning is one (the only One) who is capable of bringing true peace, justice, wholeness, and well-being to a troubled, war-torn, desperate, hopeless, and helpless world. And this world-wide peace will be established through a government that will, “rest on his (Messiah’s) shoulders.” It will be a government that, “will never end.” For any government to rest on one man’s shoulders and continue forever, requires that the “man” himself must live forever, which of course he will because he is the “Everlasting Father.”

The Jewish People & the Jewish Messiah

Most Jews are passionately awaiting Messiah’s first appearance, particularly the observant Jews and Rabbis (meaning those who to some degree or another still observe and adhere to the Law of Moses). Although there are thousands of Jews world-wide who believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah (the Son of God, the Son of Man, and the Son of David) the vast majority of Jews do not. Moreover, most Jewish Rabbis do not believe that the Messiah will be of divine origin. Although the Messiah will be appointed (empowered) by God, he will not be the Son of God, nor possess divine attributes that belong to God alone. For the most part this stems from the long-standing belief that God is One (which he is, meaning the one and only true God); but that he is not a triune God (three in One), and that he certainly doesn’t have a Son nor ever will.

But if so, then what does one do with this spectacular passage from Isaiah Chapter 9? Or how can the following passage be understood unless a Jew (or Gentile) comes to grip with the reality of what is being said: “The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one” (Psalms 2:2, italics for emphasis). “For the Lord declares, ‘I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem … The king proclaims the Lord’s decree: The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father’” (Psalms 2:7, italics for emphasis). And to put an emphatic exclamation point on this magnificent passage, “Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry…” (Verse 12).

Notice the personal pronouns and the distinction between God and a king, who is the one whom God refers to as his Son. Whose son? God’s son, because it says “You (Messiah) are my (God the Father’s) son. Today I (God the Father) have become your (Messiah, the son’s) Father.” To be sure, there are some Old Testament passages that metaphorically refer to Israel as God’s son or daughter or wife; but never as a King or as God’s “Royal Son, as Psalms Chapter 2 does. There’s no way the personal pronouns or the contextual reference points can be stretched to include Israel in this passage, or in Isaiah Chapter 53, or in other Messianic prophecies.

Another startling passage: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet’” (Psalms 110:1). Then later in this chapter, “The Lord will extend your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem … you are arrayed in holy garments … You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” (See Genesis Chapter 14 and Hebrews Chapter 7 for the fascinating description of Melchizedek).

Here King David is making some amazing observations and connections. He is relaying to us what God (The Lord) is saying to another Lord; that this other Lord is “my Lord” (meaning David’s Lord). That this other Lord will be given a powerful kingdom (meaning he is a King), but that he will also be arrayed in holy garments (that only the High Priest could wear—see Leviticus) and that he will, in fact, be a (High) Priest forever. Only two people in all of history were qualified to be both King and High Priest, Melchizedek and the Messiah. But only Messiah will sit at the right hand of God and only the Messiah will save the Jews (and Gentiles) from their sins. See the entire 53rd Chapter of Isaiah, but here just one verse will be referenced.

In fact, I’m going to quote from the Bible translation into English by David H. Stern, a superb Jewish scholar who was raised in the Jewish religion by Jewish parents, but came to faith in the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua, at the age of thirty-seven. “After this ordeal, he will see satisfaction. By his knowing (pain and suffering), my righteous servant makes many righteous; it is for their sins that he suffers” (Isaiah 53:11, Complete Jewish Bible).

In Isaiah Chapter 9 we have the unique fusion of adjective and noun that declares the Messiah to be both Wonderful and a Wonder. Then we have another incredible synthesis with Messiah Jesus as both the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) and our, “…eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 6:20). Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies once a year to offer a sacrificial lamb for the sins of Israel. So Jesus is both the subject (High Priest) and object (Lamb of God) of salvation. When Christ willingly laid down his life to pay the penalty for our sins he was the (sinless) High Priest who administered the sacrifice and he was also the (perfect) sacrifice itself. That is utterly amazing!

Other Old Testament passages ascribe divinity both directly and indirectly to Messiah. And, of course, the entire New Testament provides historical and theological evidence to demonstrate that Jesus of Nazareth is the very Messiah foretold by the Jewish prophets. There are dozens of examples (we don’t have time/space to delve into them) showing iron-clad connections and correlations between the Old Testament prophecies of Messiah and New Testament fulfillment of those predictions in the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Lest you think that non-constructively I’m faulting or criticizing the Jews for not recognizing who Messiah is in their own Scriptures, I am not. I love Israel and I love the Jewish people. As I said in a very recent article, I fully understand that God’s salvation comes through the Jews. I love them because God loves them and God has promised in His word that one day the entire nation (remnant) of Israel will embrace Yeshua as their Messiah, the Royal Son of God.

Give and Take

For many the world-over, including Christians, Christmas and salvation and giving and joy are difficult to even think about in the midst of personal heartache and troubles. Whether from losing a job, losing someone we love dearly (even many years ago), not having enough to pay the bills or even enough to eat, broken relationships, health problems including terminal illness, or any number of other hardships, it’s so hard to believe that God really cares. But he does care … deeply. It’s just that we tend to forget that this world is fallen and (fatally) flawed, and many refuse to accept the reasons why this is such an imperfect world. Long ago, when the first man and woman exercised the freedom of choice that their Creator gave to them, they decided they didn’t need God and went their own way; and sin entered the world. With it came evil, disease, negligent accidents, war, injustice, poverty, pain, suffering, and death.

There are some who don’t even have the money to buy a Christmas gift, let alone a Christmas tree.

And still others wonder (in the sense of agonizing) why their child was “taken” from them, be it a tragic accident, an untimely illness, an act of violence, or in my case … loss of my six-week old son by crib death in 1975. But do we really know if God took them? If we’re not sure whether God took them, at the very least we usually think or say, “God could have prevented this. Why didn’t he? Where was he?”

It’s all too easy to stay at arm’s length from God and for all practical purposes not want God to “interfere” with our lives (for a multitude of reasons), but then to blame him when someone or something is taken from us. Or to accuse him of not preventing a tragedy when our entire life has been lived without seeking God and trusting in the “child born to us, the “son given to us.” For billions the world over, they want no part of a God who they think might prevent them from pursuing all the worldly pleasures (no matter who gets hurt) possible; yet when it comes to an unexpected misfortune in their life, finger-pointing at God is often the first reaction. Can we have it both ways? Can we with one side of our mouth say, “I want/need to do my own thing, so leave me alone God.” And on the other side, “Where were you God when my daughter died from leukemia?”

We intentionally or unintentionally fail to thank God for all the good things in life, but when it comes to the bad things our tendency is to say, “Why God? Why did this happen?” And this question is not always a plea for understanding or consolation; sometimes it’s an accusation and outright challenge that God would ever do such a thing. Are there answers to these questions? Many times, no. What could I possibly say to satisfy someone who asks me, “You seem to know the Bible pretty well … tell me why you think my baby died.” Thirty-eight years later, I still don’t fully understand why my infant child died in his crib. But I do know one thing with utmost certainty: If I had not accepted Jesus Christ as God’s only son “given to us” for salvation, I would never see my son again (and other loved ones in heaven) after I die.

Some things happen to us or others in life that we label tragedies. We do so because we see no purpose in or reason for it. Does God take things and people? Yes he does, but only sometimes … certainly not all the time. Is there a purpose for it? Yes, but the purpose belongs to God, even though we don’t always understand the reason for it. But sometimes we do know the reason, because the Bible and the circumstances show us the reason. Many times the reason is for the Lord to get someone’s attention, whether to show them salvation or correct (for Christians) certain destructive behavior. Can and does God prevent some harmful things from happening? Of course he does, but when and where he chooses, which gets back to his purpose and plan for the entire human race … for me and for you. Scripture is full of incidents and examples to confirm what I’m saying.

And then there are billions of people in the world who have no interest in Christmas whatsoever; because they don’t believe that the child was given to them also.

The True Gift That Keeps on Giving

From the beginning God decided to do something about this dreadful problem of sin and sorrow, of greed and grief, of arrogance and apathy that plagues the human race. He gave us a gift that could change our very destiny.

And so, we remember and hang on tightly to this wonderful wonder of a message in Isaiah and hundreds of other passages in Scripture that tell us about the Greatest Story ever told, the greatest Gift ever given: God’s very own Son. Jesus is the Son of God but he is also God the Son. God’s precious gift came to us wrapped in strips of cloth; not under a Christmas tree in a snug, cozy house, but in a lowly manger … a feeding trough for animals. And the child born to us grew to be a man who would later be wrapped in burial linen, having died a brutal death on a cross as the greatest sacrifice ever made for mankind. His death in exchange for the forgiveness of our sins and everlasting life in Heaven.

That’s why the Magi traveled hundreds of miles … to acknowledge this child as the Messiah, bow down before him, and to give him expensive gifts. They knew who he was. That’s why we light up our Christmas tree and our house; to recognize that Jesus is the light of the world. That’s why we laugh and smile and express our love for family and friends and give gifts to them: to remember the greatest gift ever given. That’s why we brim with as much anticipation and excitement watching our children, as they express while opening our gifts to them. Our hearts are filled with joy when they say, “Thanks Mom, Thanks Dad! This is what I’ve always wanted; it’s the best present ever!”

That’s why we hug our child, or spouse, or brother, or sister, or aunt, or grandma, or friend and say, “Thank you for such a wonderful gift.” That’s when we fully realize, “It’s better to give than to receive.” And that’s when tears of joy fill our eyes because we are overwhelmed by the thought of such great love. God created us; he knows us, he knows all about us: the wrong things we’ve done, our failures, and yet he loves us unconditionally. “Amazing love how can it be … that you my God would die for me.”

And in this age of God’s Grace that began when Christ came to this earth, did you know that there’s only one thing that God requires of us: To simply receive the gift because we trust both the Gift and the Giver, and respond in great wonder, “Thank you, Lord, I believe in you and what you did for me … you are so WONDERFUL!”

Jesus was given to us. His Father gave him and he gave himself. He is God’s gift to every man, woman, and child because there’s no other person or religion or system or way to God, except through Jesus sacrificial death on the cross. We don’t; in fact, we can’t DO anything to earn this gift. A gift is not a gift if it has to be earned. A gift is not a gift unless it is received. If we say “No thank you” to the giver then the gift is of no value to us.

The gift was already paid for in full … the shed blood of Christ. That’s what Jesus said as he died on the cross, “It is finished.” Meaning “paid in full.”

So then we remember: Jesus IS the reason for the season (and all seasons).

Whether we’re alone, or with someone, or with a whole houseful of relatives, we can say, “Happy Birthday Jesus. It’s all about YOU!”

And that’s the Wonder of it all.

Things to Ponder:
– “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
– “Joseph, son of David”, the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21).

Let’s Make a Deal

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

About three weeks ago, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei announced to the Iranian people: “Israel is doomed to failure and annihilation.” That, “Zionist leaders cannot be called human.” A short while before that, Khamenei said, “The Zionist regime is a rabid dog.” There were other words of hatred directed against Israel. But the irony of this menacing message is that it was delivered disrespectfully just a short time before the G5+1 (United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany) completed negotiations with Iran in a November 24th interim deal called a “Joint Plan of Action”—to ease economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for a “slow-down” of Iran’s nuclear enrichment of uranium.

Would you make a deal with someone whose main purpose in life was to destroy you and members of your family or your best friend? How do you negotiate with those who would lie to you, cheat you, and ultimately kill you to accomplish their warped objectives? Where do you start? What do you say? How sure can you be? Why are you even there in the first place? But none of these questions seemed to bother the G5+1, with perhaps the exception of France.

“Suppose, we can reason with them?” Really? Concerning Iran, if they had done just one positive thing in the last 34 years to suggest the slightest hint of cooperation or concession, then there might be a slim chance (say .01%) of reaching some sort of agreement. *Note: It’s been 34 years since the attack on the US Embassy in Tehran and kidnapping of dozens of US Embassy representatives by the newly formed Islamic government of Iran. If we’re even a fraction wrong about Iran’s true intentions, then there’s a 99.9% chance they will follow through on their threats.

This interim (not final … not even close) agreement is supposed to last for six months, during which time the G5+1 powers will monitor Iran’s “pledges” of compliance. However, there was no allowance made by Iran whatsoever, to halt its nuclear program and dismantle all the centrifuges. In fact, this so-called “deal” has yet to be signed by any of the participating nations. Every day, over 20,000 centrifuges continue to spin more enriched uranium for Iran’s not-so-secret plan: nuclear weapons.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s response to this menacing pact was to label it an, “historic mistake.” He should know. For the same 34 years, Israel has lived under the constant threat of Iranian terror exported to Syria and Lebanon, especially through Hezbollah. Because Israel understands her enemies far better than the United States under the current administration, Netanyahu also said, “The most dangerous regime in the world must not be allowed to have the most dangerous weapon in the world … we will not allow Iran to receive a military nuclear capability.” And, “As to the (Iranian) actual threat, we will act against it in time if need be.” These quotes are part of a speech given during Prime Minister Netanyahu’s recent visit to Rome.

What does former Arkansas Governor and highly popular TV host (and likely Republican Presidential Candidate in 2016), Mike Huckabee, think about this Joint Plan of Action? Was it a historic success or historic mistake? He responded by saying that the United States, “has indicated that they are going to act independently of Israel as it relates to Iran.” Which according to Huckabee would be, “a very foolish policy.” He goes on to state, “I think now the Israelis have really a license to act without having to be scolded for not having consulted the U.S. for their plans.” In other words, why should Israel consult with or obtain America’s approval to pre-emptively attack Iran’s nuclear sites if the United States didn’t include Israel in what may, indeed, prove to be a historic mistake.

Regardless of your view on the right or wisdom of Israel to act independently of the US, or the G5+1, or the entire world, I would again ask: Would you sit down at the table with an enemy who has sworn to do anything and everything they can to terminate your existence on this earth? And keep in mind that Iran has not only threatened to wipe Israel from the global map, it has also avowed to destroy the “Great Satan.” That’s right. Iran refers to America as the Great Satan; Israel is only the “little Satan.” We should be so honored?!

In that context, how America and the other G5 superpowers would seemingly ignore (except for a few innocuous words to chastise Khamenei’s condemnation of Israel) Iran’s in your face tirade at the outset of these “historic” talks is simply inconceivable. And that’s not all. Listen to what Secretary of State, John Kerry, recently said during his 8th trip to Israel (9th trip by the time this article is published; reminiscent of Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger’s “shuttle diplomacy in 1973 … so much so that Kerry answered the media’s serious inquiry about the number of trips to the Middle East, with the quip, “It’s a commute, folks”): Kerry boasted, “We will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. Not now, not ever.” Really? What about the red line that he and President Obama emphatically said would be enforced in Syria? For all intents and purposes, it has become a yellow line of an overtly cautious, but potentially lethal compromise; indeed, a line of retreat—if not surrender. Oh, not the kind of surrender found in actual war; rather, the kind of up-front pacification that sweet-talks the enemy with, “We’ll play fair if you will.”

Fortunately, many members of the Senate and House of Representatives including some democrats have seen through the White House’s tactics, and have reminded Secretary Kerry and President Obama that the sole purpose of sanctions against Iran was to pressure them into absolute abandonment of their nuclear ambitions; not to entice this evil regime into diplomatic dialogue with a misguided hope that we could persuade Iran to listen to world opinion. We can only hope that the Senate and Congress exhibit the courage and tenacity to reinforce the sanctions. Why is this fortitude so vitally necessary? Because the evidence is all too clear: A nation like Iran doesn’t know the meaning of fair play. No more so than did Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. And how did we deal with Hussein? Well, we all know how that story ended.

Did the United States negotiate with Hitler and his Third Reich, or with the Emperor of Japan, or with Mussolini? A thousand times, No! We fought to the bitter end … one that had no other possible option but unconditional surrender of our enemies. But England did. Our President’s appeasement of Iran is no different from England’s (through Chamberlain) paper agreement with Hitler that led to the famous quote: “We have peace in our time.” Shortly thereafter, World War II erupted. What makes us think that Iran is any different, when their blatant ambition to destroy Israel and America is no different that Hitler’s malignant plan of conquering Europe (and eventually the U.S.) and of eliminating all Jews from the face of the earth?

More Deals

Amazingly, there is also another six-month period of time left in an earlier dialogue that began some three months ago between Israel and the Palestinians, as orchestrated by the United States. Actually, these conferences were more like an agreement to talk. What did the Palestinians give up as a “good faith” gesture to Israel before they would agree to approach the negotiating table? The answer is: Nothing. What was required of Israel and what did Israel, in fact, do? Nothing less than the phased release of hundreds of convicted murderers, saboteurs, and terrorists.

I’m sorry; as much as I love my country and want to respect and support a President (just because he is our President, but whose actions and programs seem to undermine the very nation he leads), I must issue a challenge: Would the United States agree to liberate hundreds of the worst criminals from their jails just to get “peace talks” underway? I think not. But then, the United States didn’t need to make such an unfathomable concession. Instead, we asked Israel to do something this country wouldn’t think of doing: comply with the PLO’s incomprehensible and reprehensible demand to release their terrorist sons and daughters back to them.

The real problem as repeated by Prime Minister Netanyahu: The Palestinians, along with the vast majority of the Muslim world, refuse to acknowledge that the State of Israel exists. They do not recognize in any way, shape, or form the right for the Jews to be in Palestine, of which there is no such thing nor has there ever been a Palestinian State. The nation/land is called Israel, as decreed by God thousands of years ago, and as ratified by the United Nations in November of 1947.

Admitting that Israel has a right to exist as a sovereign nation is the bedrock foundation before any compromises whatsoever are considered. Incredibly, Israel is willing to make who knows what concessions just to be recognized as a people and as a nation. Can you imagine any President, including the current administration, needing to seek recognition as a nation before the United States would enter into negotiations or sign a treaty or pact?

President Ronald Reagan comes to mind: He couldn’t have cared less whether Mikhail Gorbachev’s Russia didn’t like America or if the Soviet Union had refused to (symbolically or literally) accept the very existence of this great nation. But the Israelis have been compelled to guard their security and very survival with an opening statement that would be unthinkable for any other nation on earth: We’ll give you some of what you demand, but first you must consent to the existence of Israel.

To Be or Not To Be? (That is the question)

Unless the Palestinians make some sort of declaration that (at least in principle) acknowledges the geographic, national, political, cultural, and racial existence of the Jews, then all of the other points of negotiation are essentially meaningless. Such issues as: return of Arab refugees, control of Jerusalem, Jewish settlements in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), control of the border crossings especially between Jordan and the West Bank, return of the Golan Heights to Syria, and the actual geographical boundaries of a Palestinian State.

When in July, 2000 at the Camp David Summit arranged by President Clinton, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat rejected an astonishing offer by then Prime Minister, Ehud Barak … to assume control of up to 92% of the West Bank, all of the Gaza Strip, and all of East Jerusalem except for the Western Wall—that said it all. The Palestinian Arabs are not interested in “sharing” the land. They never have and probably never will. They want it ALL. They want Jews out. Why a whole bunch of people world-wide, including some Christians, fail to grasp this is beyond me.

So Israel mulls over a practically hopeless situation: how to work reasonably with those who demonstrate virtually nothing but irrational hatred and hostile behavior toward you? The Jews rightfully ask: How can you make a deal with someone who doesn’t even recognize that you exist? When they look at you, you are, for all practical purposes, invisible. You are a nonentity. You don’t have a birthright (right of birth) and you aren’t even qualified to belong on the map. You don’t belong here or anywhere, because your rebirth (1948) was entirely illegitimate. How do you respond when your complete history is rewritten and replaced with loathsome lies as found even in Palestinian school textbooks and through incessant propaganda distributed by the Palestinian media? Absurdly ironical is Arab curriculum that teaches both Creation and Evolution. As applied to Muslims, Islam credits their god, Allah, as the Creator. When it comes to Jews, evolution is their source; as they are descendants of apes.

Summary

Never before in history has the entire world been so focused on one little nation inhabited by a mere six million Jews. And yet that’s exactly what the Bible predicted. In addition to several million Arabs in Israel, surrounding Arab countries number in the hundreds of millions, with land space that dwarfs Israel; enough land to accommodate millions more Arabs. But oddly and unfortunately many of these nations fight among themselves (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon).

Even more nonsensically, they blame the Jews for their misfortunes. However, they do have one basic mindset: They detest Israel. I suppose if they ever agree on how best to govern themselves (Sunni or Shi’ite Muslim law), then they might (God forbid) agree on how to best destroy Israel. Or perhaps they think and hope that Iran will do that for them. Personally, I don’t dislike the Arabs or the Persians. I sometimes pray for their salvation, as I often do for the Jews. I will do my best to pray equally for both peoples. But the aforementioned observations are a matter of historical record and current events.

Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings, Queens, Heads of State the world over are under the influence of the “intoxicating” effect that Israel has exerted on the entire world. (Read Zechariah 12:2-3). Nations are stoned from an overpowering elixir to find a solution to the problems in and surrounding this tiny country. To their detriment, many of these nations point the finger of blame at Israel; but seem to do so in a senseless, illogical drunken stupor caused by consumption of too many “spirits” from Arab, Muslim, Russian, South America, and European winepresses. And, I’m beginning to be concerned about America’s sudden taste for this wine that can only lead to the pouring out of God’s wrath through His winepress (Revelation 14:19).

Will a “final solution” follow Adolph Hitler’s formula; or will it track with God’s majestic plan for Israel?

In addition to God blessing his “special possession”, Israel (Psalms 28:9), it is a wonderful thing that God has extended his salvation to all Gentiles. But first and foremost, God’s Messiah was sent to save his own people, the Jews. The Savior to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles (Romans 1:16) is, in fact, a Jewish Messiah … born a Jew in Bethlehem, lived as a Jew in Nazareth and Galilee, died and raised from the dead as a Jew in Jerusalem, will return to the City of David on the Mount of Olives as King of the Jews, and shortly thereafter will fight for all of Israel as “The Lion from the Tribe of Judah.” He Is: “King of all kings and Lord of all lords.”

There is, however, a dreadful risk for every person on earth who rejects Messiah Jesus as personal Savior and every nation that refuses to accept the very existence of and purpose for Israel, as clearly set forth in Scripture.

Personal Rejection of Messiah: “And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment” (John 3:36).
National Rejection of Israel: “The day is near when I, the LORD, will judge all godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads. Just as you swallowed up my people on my holy mountain, so you and the surrounding nations will swallow the punishment I pour out on you. Yes, all you nations will drink and stagger and disappear from history” (Obadiah 1: 15-16).

It’s really easier than one might think (even for a Palestinian). Just repeat after me: “The State of Israel.”

Let all who name the name of our Jewish Messiah continue to:
Sha’alu Shalom Yerushalayim (Pray for the peace of Jerusalem)!

Things to Ponder
– When Palestinian children are taught that every Jew is unworthy of even being called a human being, what do you suppose those children will think and do when they grow up?
– Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir once said, “There will only be peace when the Arabs love their children more than they hate the Jews.” What do you think most Muslims would say to that? From all I’ve read and heard, they would (as horrible as it sounds) probably reply, “There will be peace only when there are no more Jewish children.”
– Does all this ancient animosity and modern-day hatred lead to the conclusion that any man-made peace and harmony between Jew and Arab is virtually impossible? If that’s your conclusion, then the Bible agrees with you. Why? Because, many passages in Scripture state and imply that true peace is possible only through the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Which is why we wait and long for his magnificent return!

Prophecy & A Jewish Holiday

PROPHECY & A JEWISH HOLIDAY

Happy Thanksgivukkah! What in the world is that, you ask? Good question, because it’s a term that was just recently coined; one that went internet viral in just a few days—to explain an event that won’t occur on the Jewish/Roman calendars for another 77,000 years. The phrase is a clever mixture of the uniquely American Holiday of Thanksgiving with the exclusively Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, which just happened to coincide this year. The eight days of Hanukkah began on Thanksgiving eve, whereas usually Hanukkah more closely tracks on the calendar with the Christmas season. In fact, Hanukkah’s normal proximity to Christmas down through the ages has given rise to its increasing prominence, even sometimes referred to as the “Jewish Christmas” which, of course, it’s not. With one notable exception: both Hanukkah and Christmas emphasize lights … Menorah candles and Christmas tree lights, respectively.

We all know about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving. Although most have heard the term Hanukkah (Happy Hanukkah) not too many know what it means … why it has become one of two enormously important holidays for Jews that are not part of the original seven festivals (as found in the books of Exodus and Leviticus) given by God through Moses and to Jews for generations thereafter. With the exception of the two most revered Jewish Holidays of Passover and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), these two events are the most widely celebrated throughout Israel and by Jews world-wide. *Note: Sukkot, (Feast of Tabernacles) comes close.

The first non-Mosaic celebration is called Purim and occurs mostly in our month of February. It is a jubilant celebration of God’s deliverance of the Jews from genocide at the hands of the wicked Persian official, Haman. You remember the story: God, through a Jewish government official named Mordecai asked (pleaded with) Queen Esther (approximately 483 BC) to daringly approach and appeal to King Xerxes to spare the Jews from annihilation. At risk of her very life, she accepted the challenge to deliver her people for “such as time as this.”

The second post-Mosaic festival celebration of Hanukkah became a vital part of Jewish tradition following the stunning campaign of a Jewish priest named Mattathias, his five sons, and a relatively small group of followers—later to be known as the Maccabees—against a vastly superior force of Syrian Greeks led by Antiochus IV (historians estimate the Jews were outnumbered a thousand to one). This evil ruler reigned over the northern kingdom, one of four kingdoms that emerged from Alexander the Great’s fragmented empire. Historians recognized the impossible odds facing the Maccabees, which is why the final victory through a series of battles is considered miraculous. But then another miracle occurred, which is as much of an integral part of Hanukkah as the defeat of the Greeks: the supply of oil to keep the Menorah candles burning for eight days. So, what is so supernatural about that? Because the fact is: The Maccabees found only enough oil for one day of candle burning!

Some Jewish rabbinical scholars maintain that the primary reason for celebrating Hanukkah is not necessarily the stunning military victory, nor even a one-day supply of oil lasting for eight days. Rather, they assert: It is to remember the remarkable renewal of the (2nd) Temple back to its consecrated holiness for and service to God, before Antiochus IV defiled it with pagan sacrifices; not the least of which was his order to erect a statue of Zeus in the Temple followed by the sacrifice of a pig to insult the Jews and blaspheme their God.

The resistance began in 167 BC, when Mattathias refused to comply with a decree to offer a sacrifice to a pagan idol. When a Jew (there were many Jews who had resigned themselves to subservience to Antiochus IV and the Syrian Greeks, to the extent that they abandoned God and their faith in Him to appease their captors) began to comply with the Syrian order of idol sacrifice, Mattathias killed the Jew and ripped down the idol. Then he and his five sons escaped to the hills of Judea and began their revolt against the cruel Greeks.

In 164 BC, Mattathias’ third son, Judah Maccabee, with his band of freedom fighters, defeated the Greek armies, recaptured the Temple, and then cleansed the Temple. On the 25th day of Kislev (which is the Jewish calendar month that overlaps our months of November and December), the menorah was rekindled and for eight days the Jews celebrated the Temple’s renewal. In fact, the Hebrew word hanuka basically means the inauguration or rededication of the Temple on Kislev 25th.

Antiochus IV Epiphanes

Obviously it was the sacrilegious brutality of the Seleucid Empire in general and Antiochus IV in particular that led to the Jewish revolt and recapture of their sacred Temple. Which, in turn, initiated the annual observance of this magnificent accomplishment through Hanukkah, a Holy Day (holiday) that is passionately celebrated to this very day. Were you aware that the Bible predicted the rise of Alexander the Great, then the division of his empire into four kingdoms (one of which was the Seleucid dynasty)? Of course. you say; It’s all found in Daniel Chapters 2 and 7 … complements of Nebuchadnezzar’s vision of the monumental statue and Daniel’s terrifying vision of the four beasts; that the third beast represented Alexander the Great’s ancient Greece. And you would be totally right on!

But did you also know that two other chapters in the amazing book of Daniel provide extensive prophetic facts on two of the four lesser empires (the Seleucids in Syria and the Ptolemy’s of Egypt) that emerged after Alexander’s sudden and early death? The prophecies of the ram and goat, of the one large and four prominent horns, of the king(s) of the north and king(s) of the south and all of the intricate future events explained in Daniel Chapters 8 & 11 were explicitly fulfilled over a period of time some 200-375 years later … during the reigns of Antiochus II, Antiochus III the Great, Seleucus IV (Seleucids) and Ptolemy I, II, V, & VI (Egypt).

However, the most notorious of these rulers was Antiochus IV, whose deplorable exploits are recorded in Chapter 8 and then resumed in the 21st verse of the 11th chapter of Daniel that says: “The next to come to power will be a despicable man who is not in line for royal succession. He will slip in when least expected and take over the kingdom by flattery and intrigue.” Secular history confirms the amazing accuracy of Daniel’s prophecies. Then beginning primarily in Daniel 11:36 to the end of the chapter, this astounding prophecy switches from Antiochus IV to another future and later king, which clearly is the Antichrist—as later confirmed by the book of Revelation.

Antiochus IV given name was Mithridates; he assumed the name of Antiochus upon ascension to the throne, having succeeded his brother, Seleucus IV, although Seleucus’ son, Demetrius I Soter, should have been the rightful heir. Time and space boundaries of this article do not permit elaboration on how all these things took place, but it does allow for some highlights of what the Bible clearly portrays Antiochus IV to be: a representative prototype or precursor of the Antichrist, which in Daniel is called the “little horn” and a “prince who is to come.” Moreover, Antiochus IV was the first Seleucid king to inscribe divine epithets on coins. One example of these markings was the Greek word epiphanies which means, “Manifest god.” He arrogantly added that divine designation to his regal title, which is how he was known then and remembered in history … Antiochus IV Epiphanes.

The English word epiphany is almost an exact transliteration of the original Greek words, epiphaneia (appearance) or epiphainein (to manifest), and the parent Greek word, phainein (to show). Likewise, the modern definition and understanding of epiphany is an appearance or manifestation of a divine being. Biblical scholars have accurately and rightfully employed this word to explain the pre-incarnate appearances of Christ as found in several Old Testament passages, then later during the spectacular post-incarnate appearance of Jesus to John in the book of Revelation.

And, were you aware that it was an epiphany appearance of Christ to Daniel with the pre-incarnate Jesus interpreting the visions given to Daniel as recorded in Chapters 10 and 11. Some of Daniel’s other visions were interpreted by the angel Gabriel, but most of the prophecies that deal with the future rulers (Antiochus and the Antichrist—who we know is Nero) were explained by Christ, himself. And there’s a rock-solid reason for that: Who better or more qualified than Messiah, himself, to expose these two evil men, who would dare to manifest themselves as God or anti-Christ?

Comparisons of Antiochus IV & Antichrist

The hideous atrocities of Antiochus IV and Nero some 200 years later (only to be exponentially intensified when Nero returns at the outset of the Tribulation) are a matter of historical record. Whereas, Antiochus and his armies killed some 40,000 Jews (men, woman, and children in just three days of carnage), and Nero vented his wickedness by slaughtering thousands of Christians, we find extraordinary similarities between the two. To wit.
– Both tyrants set themselves up as gods; Nero carried and will again carry it one step farther, “…exalting himself and claiming to be greater than every god, even blaspheming the God of gods…” (Daniel 11:36). See Revelation 13:5-6.
– Both of these despots ascended to the throne but not as the rightful heir; rather through a series of unlawful and deceitful maneuvers.
– Both Antiochus IV (Daniel 11:31) and the man of lawlessness (II Thessalonians 2:4 & Matthew 24:15) would desecrate and defile the Jewish Temple by stopping the Jewish sacrifices and setting up a “sacrilegious object” … as applied to Antiochus, the 2nd Temple; as applied to Nero, the yet-to-be rebuilt 3rd Temple.
– Both would do battle with a king(s) of the south as explained in Daniel 11, with verses 40-42 applying to the Antichrist.
– Both would reward their allies by distributing plunder, wealth, and land, which is a rare thing for any dictator to do.
– After engaging their enemies to the south, both would return to their northern based empire by going through Israel and, while in the holy land, inflict great damage and destruction on Israel. This is exactly what Antiochus did to the Jews on his way back from war with Ptolemy VI of Egypt. (Daniel 11:28 for Antiochus and verses 41-42 for the latter king—Antichrist).
– Both would inexplicably halt their conquest of Israel because of alarming news from other battle fronts and their evil reigns would abruptly end. Their time would run out, because that was God’s plan for them. Antiochus IV died suddenly from a mysterious disease in 164 BC. Regarding Antichrist: “…But while he is there (meaning at Megiddo), his time will suddenly run out, and no one will help him” (Daniel 11:45). See also Revelation 19: 19-21.

Of course there a few dissimilarities, because they are two distinct rulers and operate in different periods of time. But in parallel terms of character flaws, egotism, pride, godlessness, brutality, they are two wicked peas in a warped pod.

It wouldn’t surprise me … in fact, I fully expect Nero to put a stop to the sacrifices and offerings (Daniel 9:27) of the Jews during the time of the Great Tribulation at the beginning of or during the 8-day celebration of Hanukkah.

Understanding the Value of Prophecy

So then, what’s the significance of and application to us in today’s world? What does it matter that a Greek demigod of ancient times even existed or that yesterday’s and today’s Jews celebrate his demise and cherish the astounding events that returned the sacred Temple to their control? The answer is: RELEVANCY!

Prophecy creates an incredible connection between the past and the present; and it also marks a clear path for the future. From God’s vantage point (and as much as we can grasp with finite minds) what happened hundreds/thousands of years ago might as well have occurred last week. Thus, we can better understand the timeless attribute of our God, who knows the end from the beginning, who sees everything in the present tense. And then we remember that, “…A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day” (II Peter 3:8).

Once again, we see the fascinating link between events of long ago with what is happening in today’s world. Biblical prophecy and history combined with secular history shows us the profound significance of ancient Israel’s victory over the forces of an evil tyrant and its relevance to the nation of Israel down to this very generation. It is a time of thankful remembrance for God’s providential control over Gentile nations and corresponding deliverance of his special possession, Israel. The lighting of the Menorah reminds Jews all over the world that they were chosen to be a light to the nations. As Christians, we are grafted into the tree that is Israel. We are one new man (Jew and Gentile, one in Christ) in God’s eyes. Our very salvation comes from the Jewish Messiah, who is THE Light of the World.

And, we better understand and appreciate our God; who providentially brings everything together according to his magnificent plan for Israel and for the Church. In this case the evil ruler, Antiochus IV—who in a fit of rage over events in Egypt (King of the South) took out his vengeance and frustration on Jerusalem and the Temple—was almost an exact prototype of the coming ruler (Antichrist) who also will vent his anger on the Jewish people. “Then at the time of the end, the king of the south will attack the king of the north. The king of the north (Antichrist) will storm out with chariots, charioteers, and a vast navy. He will invade various lands and sweep through them like a flood. He will enter the glorious land of Israel, and many nations will fall…” (Daniel 11: 40-41).

By making these connections, the saints of the Tribulation period and a remnant of the Jews will wisely perceive the true intentions of Nero (Antichrist), who is essentially an exact replica (only on a global scale) of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. They will remember their history and fully realize that Daniel’s prophecy now applies historically to Antiochus and prophetically (during the Tribulation) to the beast. Here’s what Daniel said: “His army will take over the Temple fortress, pollute the sanctuary, put a stop to the daily sacrifices, and set up the sacrilegious object that causes desecration. He will flatter and win over those who have violated the covenant. But the people who know their God will be strong and will resist him” (Daniel 11: 31-32, italics for emphasis).

Then we see another correlation: Just like the miraculous victory of the Maccabees over Antiochus IV’s armies, and the equally miraculous burning of the Menorah lights for eight days with only one day’s supply of oil, so will The Light of the World (Messiah Jesus) completely conquer the Antichrist beast of Revelation and his armies. But this time, Messiah will come—not as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world—but as the Lion from the tribe of Judah, with power and great glory!

And we more passionately long for world-wide righteousness, justice, and peace that our glorious Messiah will bring in Daniel 7:14: “He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.”

Thus, we learn even more that our Lord is completely trustworthy because what he says will happen, does happen; and what he says he will do, he does.

Things to Ponder
– I would never criticize anyone for not being all that interested in Biblical prophecy. In and of itself, there’s nothing erroneous about an indifference to prophecy. We’re not even supposed to judge someone for the bad things they do, let alone their personal preference for certain parts of the Bible. But to minimize or overlook prophetic passages in Scripture means that we’re missing approximately 1/3 of the entire Bible!

Giving Thanks … What is it all about

GIVING THANKS … WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT

We interrupt our weekly (blog) broadcast with this special announcement: “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever” (Psalms 106:1). What a wonderful season of the year: to set aside some time just to be thankful, and then to give and receive gifts!

Did you know that when all is said and done, there’s only one basic standard that God imposes on mankind? There’s one fundamental benchmark that God uses to separate the good from the bad, the righteous from the unrighteous, the godly from the ungodly, the just from the unjust, the saved from the unsaved. It’s a very simple, yet profound prerequisite that, if fully understood up close and personal, really isn’t a condition at all. Rather, it’s a response that defines and divides the entire human race into two distinct groups, as viewed by God, himself: Those who acknowledge and respond to the true and living God and those who do not.

What is this response that delineates who we are and actually determines our destiny? Let’s get it first hand from the Bible. “They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks….” (Romans 1: 19-21, italics for emphasis).

Forget about going so far as worshiping the creator of heaven and earth and the giver of life and all good things. All those who are determined to go their own way, do their own thing, and take credit for all they have or are, refuse to express or even consider any gratitude to God—though down deep they know that God exists and that they and the universe could not exist without its Creator.

If someone can never get to the point of acknowledging that Almighty God is the source of their very breath and being, it’s highly unlikely that they will believe what God (through the Bible) says, and certainly would not personally accept what he has done for mankind, i.e. by giving us the greatest gift ever given … His only Son to die for our sins and the penalty of those sins.

The Joy of Gratitude

Whether the happy occasion is Thanksgiving, or Christmas, Hanukkah, Veterans Day, Valentine’s Day, birthdays or anniversaries, nothing brings us joy like giving and receiving. Even the most stingy and miserly can manage a smile when their gift package is opened by someone they care about. We all love to receive gifts and many love to give even more than receive. When we receive a gift (special or routine), what is our normal response? “Thank you, so much.” And when we give, “You’re welcome.”

Very few of us express a hearty thank you to our employer when we receive our paycheck. Why? Because it really isn’t necessary. Oh, we’re appreciative to be gainfully employed, but the fact of the matter is: We earned that money! Not so with a gift. We thank the giver because the gift was free, and it was given with a spirit of compassion and perhaps even love.

In fact, isn’t that what thanksgiving (the giving of thanks) is all about? Think about it for a moment. What really happens when we thank someone for a gift? First, we have obviously accepted the gift as exactly what it is intended to be: a gift. Secondly, we are expressing gratitude for the gift itself. Whether we’re surprised at the gift or not, we are grateful for the intrinsic value of the gift no matter how much we use it, just because it’s a present. Thirdly, we are thankful to/for the giver … meaning for their very existence and their expression of goodness and generosity that often includes some form of sacrifice for that gift, whether it’s hard-earned money, time, effort, or just plain old kindness and consideration.

The Highest Level of Gratitude

With God, we can and should take this one step farther, into a higher dimension. We thank Him for everything. “Thank you Lord for this beautiful day. Thank you for the rain. Thank you so much Lord for family and friends. Thank you for who you are, what you do, and what you will do.” And so the Pilgrims (Puritans) gave thanks to God for guiding them to a beautiful land, and giving them a country where they were free to worship God, the giver of all good things.

God has given us many gifts, blessings, and sometimes even miracles. But two amazing gifts stand out above all the others: (1) Life itself on this earth; (2) Life everlasting, through the death, burial, and resurrection of God’s only Son, Jesus Christ. We had no say in the first gift. All we can do is reply and say thank you Lord for giving me life. Likewise, we say the same thing with the second gift, “Thank you Lord for giving me life again … life after death … eternal life!” That’s all God expects from us, that’s all we can really do: Recognize that the awesome plan of salvation is a gift (unearned, unmerited, and undeserved), accept it, and say, “Thank you, Lord.” When we do that we agree with Him, we trust Him, we humbly express our eternal gratefulness for his promises—because his promises are true. And we present our body, soul, and spirit as a living sacrifice to our Great God and Savior, and we say, “This is the least I can do. Use me as you see fit. Thy will be done.” (See Romans 12: 1-2).

Wrong/Right Reasons for Giving

How many times a day, week, or month, do we say or hear the words, “Thank you.” I would venture to say hundreds of times in the course of any given year. And that’s good. On the other hand, how many times are those words more of a traditional, expected, or knee-jerk reaction to everyday life? How often do we truly thank the Lord for who he is and what he does, and really mean it, really think about what we’re saying, really want to bless and lift up his holy name? And genuinely thank those in our life for their care, encouragement, help, and consideration.

All religions (or even non-religious systems such as the New Age movement) of the world have one thing in common: Through some form of sacrificial system, they claim it’s possible (not a certainty as ultimately the god of that religion will determine where a person spends eternity and only after death will that be decided) to obtain a certain amount of favor with that god, and in some fashion “earn” his mercy, or at least generate recognition and favor among people whom they admire. These “sacrificial” good deeds include, but are not limited to: charitable giving of money and time, membership in and support of their church or organization, daily or periodic rituals, and abstinence from or deprivation of certain things either continually or on select occasions. The idea is: The more you give of yourself, the more likely you will be accepted because your good works hopefully will cancel out the wrong things you’ve done.

Not so with the Christian faith. There’s only one decisive sacrifice asked of those who have been born-again from above, who have been redeemed by the Son of God through faith in Him … the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Can you imagine? What kind of sacrifice is that, we ask? That’s too easy. Shouldn’t I be doing much more than just giving thanks?

We need to understand that genuine gratefulness is all that God ultimately wants from us. Because when we sincerely express thanks, we are giving to God our very heart; we are setting aside pride and selfishness by humbling ourselves to his grace and mercy; we are acknowledging how great he is, and yet how good he is. We are saying that all we have and all we are belong to Him. We are saying that apart from Him, we can do nothing, we have nothing, and for all practical purposes we are nothing. (See the Book of Ecclesiastes for the vanity and futility of life without God—and no less from the wisest and wealthiest man who ever lived). We are offering ourselves to him and we want to serve him; not for what we can get out of it, but simply because “our cup runs over.”

If we are truly thankful, then from an overflowing heart we do those things that other religions require to obtain salvation; but we do them in reactive and proactive gratitude for the salvation freely given to us. When we give thanks to the Lord from a truly grateful heart, we are fully acknowledging that so great a salvation is by grace and grace alone, and the only meaningful response is: “Thank you, Jesus.” That alone glorifies God, which was His very reason for creating us in the first place.

We are saying, “I love you Lord, because you first loved me!”

“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips that give thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15, NAS). Here praise to God is further compressed and defined by the verbal expression of giving thanks to His name, as God’s name represents all that He is and all that He does.

Let’s thank him with the words of an old Christian melody:
“Thank you Lord for saving my soul, thank you Lord for making me whole, thank you Lord for giving to me, Thy great salvation so rich and so free.”
And another one: “Amazing love, how can it be; that you my God would die for me.”

Things to Ponder:
– “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (I Thessalonians 5:18). Notice that it doesn’t say be thankful for everything (all circumstances); rather be thankful in all that happens. We don’t say, “Thank you Lord for my automobile accident.” But we can learn from it and say, “Thanks, Lord for giving me the strength to get through it.”
– I wonder how much good it would do us and others around us if we truly cultivated an attitude of gratitude? As contrasted to the disposition of complaining and grumbling and finding fault.
– “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (Christ)” (II Corinthians 5:21, NAS). Wow! Amazing! “Thank you, Lord.”
