Kingdom of God

From the dawn of human existence virtually every kind of government has been in place at one time or another. A country’s government is often a reflection of its people … their race, beliefs (religious or secular), moral values, ethnic upbringing and tribal territory. But sometimes government can be an ill-conceived and unwanted bureaucracy with leaders vying for power and supremacy. All too often, innocent people are victimized by such power struggles, both citizens of the country and residents of neighboring nations that take exception to such Machiavelli type systems.

The common people, representatives of those people, wealthy entrepreneurs, ambitious leaders (good and bad), or all of the above can determine whether a country will become a parliamentary or a democratic representative republic; an absolute (king/queen) or constitutional monarch; an autocratic ruler or state controlled (communism or fascism) dictatorship; an aristocratic or military oligarchy; a cleric-run theocracy or even a true Theocracy. The idea of a theocentric government is, “having God as the central interest and ultimate concern.” (Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary).

Geopolitical experts can argue until the proverbial cows come home over the best form of human government, but there’s nothing like the proof of the pudding … hard evidence to historically demonstrate the success of great nations of the earth, past and present. We could also debate the definition of greatness, but invariably the most notable historians (those who are as objective as they can be) have identified such empires as (ancient) Israel, Assyria, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, Mongol (Genghis Khan), China, France, England, Ottoman Turks, Germany, and the United States as constituting greatness, without necessarily imposing the standard of morality as a required criteria for success. Meaning that some “great” empires have been primarily evil or amoral. Mostly because their leaders were corrupt or even depraved. By and large, however, the most fundamental condition for historical prominence has been some measure of longevity.

Moreover, the destiny of nations (both good and bad) has often been determined by the benevolence or malevolence of rulers … the laws they make and enforce, the decrees they issue, decisions they make, benefits they provide, and goals they aspire to. As the leaders go, so go the people. A ruler with integrity, compassion, and wisdom can be, and often is, a moral compass to the entire nation. Conversely, a selfish, deceitful, evil ruler can bring an entire nation down. Even the United States of America, which many contemplate to be the greatest nation of all time (at least the greatest Republic), relies heavily on its President—considered by some as the most powerful position in the world—to lead … economically, socially, militarily, legally, and morally.

The rise and fall of great leaders, noble and ignoble; of great nations, moral and immoral, is the stuff that legends are made of. And many of these individual and national epitaphs can be found in the Bible as well as secular history. For example, the glorious rise and inglorious fall of Babylon.

The Fate of Nations

Ultimately, the success of any nation will hinge directly on whether the people and especially the leaders acknowledge the sovereignty of the true and living God, the God of the Bible. The truth and accuracy of the following Biblical passages can be tested and measured by examining the successful emergence and enduring accomplishments of nations down through history. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalms 33:12). Also, as God said to Abraham and as applied to the nation of Israel: “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3).

When people and nations at least acknowledge the Sovereign God of Scripture; periodically thank him for his provisions and goodness; treat the Jews and Israel with some measure of respect, invariably they prosper and remain safe from their enemies. For it is God who eventually determines the fate of all nations. Of course, most secular historians loathe inclusion of these behind-the-scene national stories of prominent leaders and common folks whose purpose in life was to serve God first, then their fellow human beings … but either way, to serve.

Although the God of the Bible is ultimately in control, Scripture is clear that he has allowed Satan to adversely influence those who want nothing to do with God. Those who pursue only pleasure and prestige in a world system predicated on and propelled by greed, selfishness, and the lust for money, power, land, and domination of their fellow-man, particularly those of another race or religion.

Satan’s supreme goal is to create a universal system of belief that will: (1) internally and covertly destabilize and replace the Kingdom of Heaven currently in the hearts of men, woman, and children who have been redeemed by Christ through his great sacrifice for our sins. (2) To establish an international religious and political system that will overtly crush nations whose fundamental existence and intrinsic value is centered on freedom of worship and enterprise … a government of, by, and for the people, such as Israel and the United States.

These two satanic strategies are underway primarily through the cults of Christianity (internal subversion) such as Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, and Jehovah’s Witness; and externally through non-Christian religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Communism, and Fascism. Any “ism” is a religion if you define religion as a belief system, which is what it really is. All of these systems are predicated on a works based program of appeasing God to somehow (maybe) merit salvation. Likewise, Fascism and Communism—with the only difference that of the State rewarding meritorious conduct and service with … whatever rewards they deem necessary.

There are many factors that separate the Bible from other religious texts, one of which is God’s plan of salvation accomplished through his Son’s death and resurrection from the dead. No other religion or philosophy has a Savior, as such. They all have requirements of what a man or woman must do to gain their god’s favor; not what God has done for us that we simply couldn’t do for ourselves, i.e. saving ourselves by declaring ourselves not guilty of breaking God’s laws. Or by reaching a completely unfounded conclusion that God will pardon us if we do a little more good than bad, all the while comparing our own definition of what is good with others. What court of law on this planet would allow a convicted criminal to pardon himself?!

Secondly, the amazing predictions recorded in Scripture, hundreds of which have already come to pass. One of the most spectacular end-times prophecies found in Scripture comes from Jesus, himself. When asked by his disciples what signs would usher in the last days which would immediately precede the end of the age, one of the first things Jesus said was, “And you will hear of wars and threats of wars … nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains; with more to come” (Matthew 24:6-8).

Nation against Nation, Kingdom against Kingdom

Some doubters contend that there have been perpetual wars and rumors of wars since Jesus uttered these words. Thus, there’s no reason to suggest that the past couple of generations (a hundred years or so) have been any different or should be any reason to assert that the end of the age is approaching. But they forget one important feature of this passage: that of comparing the signs to a pregnant woman whose birth pains have begun. That one of, if not the most important sign, is nation going to war against nation, kingdom against kingdom. The obvious implication is that these wars will intensify in numbers and severity just like birth pangs steadily increase during childbirth.

The number of new nations birthed into existence since the founding of the United States, especially during the 20th & 21st centuries is staggering. Many of these nations were established by and through military engagement, mostly on the African Continent, but also in Europe and Asia and the Middle East. Some wars are justified—freedom from totalitarian tyranny or abolition of slavery, such as the American Revolutionary War and then the Civil War. Most are not, i.e. pursuit of power, lust for land, or simply a love of war and violence. (Glory of war and to the victor goes the spoils mentality).

These same two centuries have produced wars and conflicts never before experienced, precisely as predicted by Jesus. Two world wars pitting one coalition of nations against another coalition, one similar form of government against another, one way of life over another. And the number of ethnic rivalries and conflicts have multiplied greatly in the past one hundred years or so. As have the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes and famines. We have seen a polarization of governments like never before, beginning with World War I and continuing even more dramatically and ostensibly with Word War II, then regional conflicts all over the world as typified by the Korean War.

What is this basic dichotomy between people, between ethnic groups, between religions, between governments and nations that often erupts in violence? It’s not really that difficult to understand, because the fundamental difference is a modern-day end-of-the-age manifestation of the ongoing universal conflict between God and Satan, as found in the hearts of men and women all over the world; and, therefore, in the forms of government that nations and ethnic groups have devised to express the desires, demands, and destiny of its people.

What it comes down to is this: On one end of the political pendulum, we have dictatorship control of the people in a nation through one tyrant or a select few leaders who impose a state controlled government based on agnostic or atheistic beliefs (man, not God is the final authority). However, the dictatorial head of these systems is often afforded god-like status by many in the elite circle of supporters and by most of the common people. Such as Fascism as found in Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy or Communism as found in Stalin’s Russia and Mao tse-tung’s China. Tragically, however, the millions of citizens killed by their leaders and millions of others who perished in the World Wars and regional insurrections are a stark reminder of the carnage caused by leaders and armies that vehemently oppose anything and everything to do with God, Jesus, and Judaic-Christian beliefs and way of life.

But there are also some fifty countries in today’s world whose government is based on some measure (moderate to extreme) of state controlled enforcement of religious laws. Of course, I’m referring to Muslim nations, many of which are or are becoming radicalized to the extent of imposing Islam’s Sharia law on its own people; and, by force, on surrounding ethnic groups as we’ve horribly seen with ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other terrorists groups. To the ultra-extreme extent that these multi-national terrorist groups are seeking to be the first to establish a world-wide government (Caliphate) of absolute authoritarian domination of the free world. Ultimately, the Islamic path of power intends to go straight to and through Jerusalem, the heart of Israel.

At the other political extreme, we have governments which (at least try) are of, by, and for the people, such as the greatest experiment of democratic representation of its kind found in the United States of America. We see this in many European nations to some extent or another, a reminder of which has been vividly stamped on the global conscience after the murderous assaults on Charlie Hebdo and the kosher store in Paris by Muslim terrorists. Incredibly, an estimated three million people plus some 50 national leaders including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu marched to express their solidarity for freedom of the press (and freedom in general) as succinctly summarized in the famous French motto, “Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite.”

This kind of civilization values the right of the individual to believe what they will, to realize their dreams as long as it doesn’t infringe on or violate the rights of others. To embrace principles such as the separation of powers, free speech, free elections, and some form of democracy.

One writer, Jewish Professor Nissim Dana, expressed the obvious conclusion reached by those who know the history of Islam: “The fact is that Islam and the rest of the world have been in a state of war since the time of Muhammad.” Is Professor Dana correct in this analysis? Yes, because the Koran, itself, demands total submission of its followers but also of the infidels … Jews and Christians. Without submission or possibly the humiliating payment of unjust and immoral taxes (essentially a tax on one’s belief), death is demanded of the infidel.

The Jewish Connection

There are two remarkable but also insidious common denominators among oppressive state governments, whether agnostic Communism and Fascism or a state sponsored religion such as Islam: (1) an intense hatred, persecution, and even genocide of the Jews. (2) To accomplish those anti-Semitic objectives and to feed the totalitarian lust for power and conquest of nations that stand in their way, Hitler’s Third Reich (and others) have launched attacks against freedom loving nations such as Great Brittain and France and the United States (Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor). Whether by means of the Nazi Final Solution or by incessant pogroms in Russia and its satellite countries or by the avowed diabolical goal of Muslims in Iran, Turkey, Africa, and the Middle-East Arab nations to wipe Israel from the face of the earth, the past century has witnessed intensified savage cruelty against the Jews.

Yet, as if to underscore the quandary (sometimes duplicity) of those who espouse diversity at all costs, including human lives, Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas was also invited to attend the Paris freedom march. This is the very same leader who recently signed a pact with Hamas to carry out the sinister goal of killing Jews and eliminating Israel from all maps of the world. Ah … if we could only distinguish militant from moderate Muslims! The fact is: the vast majority of Muslims are militant when it comes to Jews, whether actively killing Jews or non-Jews who make fun of Muhammad; or passively condoning those killings. The brutal reality of it all: It’s okay to kill freedom-loving Jews but not freedom-loving Gentiles.

But this has all been predicted and recorded in the Bible … Satan’s ruthless plot through governmental regimes and organized religion (I am not including evangelical Christianity as anything approaching an organized hierarchy such as Roman Catholicism) to eliminate the Jews, to obliterate Israel, and to destroy the Church—the body of Christ, comprised of Jews and Gentiles alike.

When God chose Abraham to be the father of the Jews and gave him the Promised Land of Israel, he said that the Gentile nations would be blessed through Abraham and his descendants. And the greatest blessing of all was the birth, death, and resurrection (for salvation) of Messiah Yeshua … through the lineage of King David, from the tribe of Judah, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham.

The coming of Messiah and his soon return will, indeed, fulfill the very purpose for the existence of Israel—to be a light to the Gentile nations. To bring righteousness, justice, and peace to a world that is rapidly sinking into an abyss of terror, anarchy, and evil.

God’s design from the beginning was to reveal himself through nature (Romans 1), then through the people and nation of Israel (Romans 9-11); and even more specifically his mighty plan of salvation through one man, who is God’s very Son. Many prophets spoke of the coming Messiah, with Isaiah’s description my favorite: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” (Isaiah 9:6-7).

Jesus Christ accomplished in great detail ALL of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. First to come as a Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53) to introduce an amazing new Age of Grace.

As the Apostle Paul confirmed: “So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins” (Ephesians 1:6-7).

True freedom must first begin in and with the human heart; a heart freed from the enslaving power and penalty of sin for all the wrong things every one of us has done. Then we can truly appreciate and pursue all of the freedoms that we cherish in America and as found in some countries whose government is, at least in theory, established for the welfare of the people. Even then we still have strife, because, as we know all too well, this is still not a perfect world. Only Christ is perfect. Not until he transforms (Raptures) our weak, still prone-to-sin earthly bodies into a glorious everlasting undefiled body, soul, and spirit like His, will we experience real peace, cooperation, understanding, love (unconditional), and justice on this earth.

The Final Kingdom of God on Earth

Paul proceeds to tell us more about God’s splendid plan for the human race. In fact he calls it a mystery, because at the time that God gave it to him even the new Christians didn’t completely understand the eternal implications of what Christ would achieve at his first coming and would continue at his second coming. Listen to these extraordinary words:

“God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth” (Ephesians 1:9-10, italics for emphasis).

That plan is none other than: THE KINGDOM OF GOD (on earth). Revealed by Messiah Jesus himself as recorded in the Gospels; and consolidated into the everlasting tenets of the Christian faith by the authors of the epistles and Revelation.

Jesus spoke often of the Kingdom of God; for example, comparing it to a mustard seed … the smallest of seeds that when planted grows into an enormous tree. Which is exactly what has happened to the body of Christ; an exponential growth down through the ages, to now consist of believers from virtually every nation and language on earth. It is the Kingdom of Heaven in the hearts and minds of those who have been redeemed by the shed blood of Christ. Next, will come the final physical Kingdom of God on this earth; at which time all people, all governments, all nations will be brought under the authority of God’s magnificent Son. He will rule the nations with firmness, but fairness.

Isn’t that what most people want? They want: law, order, equality, safety, peace. And they want someone who has the kind of authority to realize those dreams, but also someone who is kind and considerate with that authority. One who truly cares about people and what’s best for them; who can rule and judge with impartiality and kindness. A truly wise and benevolent King whose attributes perfectly reflect who and what he is: Love, Truth, Justice, Mercy.

At the right time (and that time is soon, very soon), Jesus will return in great power and glory to rescue Israel from annihilation, and defeat the very source of evil, Satan, as well as the Satanic kingdom that will be led primarily by the Antichrist.

Then, and only then, will we see an end to the horrific bloodshed that is becoming a daily reality all over the world. Death and destruction by the hands of bloodthirsty terrorists, power-hungry dictators, land-grabbing tyrants, and from entire nations and races who have created false gods and who kill and maim innocent people because their god requires it in their “sacred” writings.

Along with others who are connecting strategic pieces of the prophetic puzzle, I am here to tell you: SOON THERE WILL BE A DAY OF RECKONING!

A day when God, through his matchless Son, Jesus, will do battle with other man-made gods such as Allah and with religious and political systems that have deceived their followers by distorting and discarding the very salvation that God has freely given to all who will believe and receive his Son.

Then we’ll see who is the one and only true God. The battle, however, is actually with Satan, the force behind these man-made gods. Although other gods do not actually exist, Satan and his demons do exist. Thus, it is he and his temporary kingdom to which religious and non-religious people the world over give their allegiance … some deliberately, others unwittingly.

Speaking of gods and kingdoms and kings, listen to this powerful prophecy of Daniel who refers to the four mighty empires of the past (Daniel’s future) and the coalition empire of nations currently being assembled for the Day of the Lord: “During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).

Certainly another subject for another day, but in the briefest closing summary possible for this article, we can confidently agree beyond any doubt: There is a monumental distinction between Allah, the god of Islam, and the true and living God of the Bible. There is NO comparison. Anyone who has read just some of the Bible and the Koran with any objectivity at all, can easily see the disparity. The differences are legion, but one will suffice: Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, is still in his grave. God’s Messiah, Jesus is not. “…Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!” (Luke 24:5-6).

One day, “The whole earth will acknowledge the Lord and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him. For royal power belongs to the Lord. He rules all the nations” (Psalms 22:27-28).

Kingdom-of-Heaven-300x209

Things to Ponder

Kings and queens rise and they fall. Kingdoms come, kingdoms go. Nations wax and wane. Soon, very soon we will witness the rise of a Royal Kingdom and a Righteous King who will rule and reign supreme on the earth: The Kingdom of God.

If you have placed your trust in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, then you will triumphantly join the host of heaven when the right time comes. Here’s what you and I and millions of others will shout when the seventh angel blows his trumpet:

“The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

With the twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones before God, we will echo: “We give thanks to you, Lord God, the Almighty, the one who is and who always was, for now you have assumed your great power and have begun to reign” (Revelation 11:17).

Do you long to live and serve in a kingdom full of truth and justice? Then choose and follow the One who will give us both and who is both.

If you know Christ as your personal Savior, then you will be among the, “…vast crowd in heaven shouting, ‘Praise the Lord! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God. His judgments are true and just…’” Revelation 19:1-2).

Happy New Year … Jerusalem Style!

Happy New Year!

Blow the trumpets! Sound the shofar! Stop all work and celebrate the New Year! Eat apples dipped in honey for a sweet year ahead. Bite into a pomegranate in hope that your good deeds for the coming year will be as many as the 613 seeds of this delicious fruit. Bake challah bread and shape it into round loaves symbolizing the precious circle of life. Examine your heart and reflect on your existence. Repent for the wrong things you have done. Make amends with others that you have offended. Contemplate, but be content!

For two days beginning this past Wednesday at sundown (which is actually the start of Thursday), millions of people all over the world celebrated another New Year by engaging in these activities and more. Each day the shofar was blown one hundred times!

What New Year? The year isn’t over yet, so what’s this all about? Most of you probably know … the shofar gave it away. Yes, the people I’m referring to are Jews. Yes, their New Year is different from the rest of the world. It comes directly from the Bible as one of the seven annual festivals, also called High Holy days; anniversaries that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (the true and living God) commanded the Jews to remember.

“Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the Lord’” (Leviticus 23:24-25).

When the 2nd Jewish Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, there was no longer a fire offering to the Lord. In fact, the entire Jewish sacrificial offerings were eliminated … to this very day. For those of us who recognize that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah, we understand that his once and for all sacrifice for our sins ended Israel’s animal sacrificial system. While Jesus was still on the cross, the Temple Veil that protected the holiest sanctuary of the Temple was mysteriously and miraculously torn apart. This miracle confirmed the New Covenant of God’s Grace, whereby every man and woman could enter the very presence of God by simply believing that Messiah Jesus purchased their salvation at the highest possible price.

“For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood … God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus” (Romans 3: 25-26).

Although the Old Covenant atonement through animal sacrifice is gone, many Jews still keep all or most of the seven holidays (Holy days). Especially, the three festivals that take place in the Jewish calendar seventh month of Tishrei, which is the overlapping Gregorian months of September and October. They are: The Feast of Trumpets or Rosh Hashana that begins on the first day of Tishrei; then Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement that begins on the tenth day of the month; then Sukkot or the Feast of Tabernacles (Booths) that begins on the fifteenth day of Tishrei.

Rosh Hashana has also become the Jewish New Year. In Hebrew, rosh means head, ha means the, and shana means year. Thus, Rosh HaShana is the head of the year or the first day of the New Year.

But wait a minute! If Rosh Hashana on the 1st of Tishrei begins a new year, then why is Tishrei the seventh month of the year? Even though the Jewish calendar consists of 30-day months (a lunar calendar) or 360 days in the year instead of the Gregorian calendar of 365 days, there are still twelve months in the Jewish year. In fact, the Bible declares that the Jewish month of Nisan is the first month of the Jewish year (overlapping our months of March and April). “The Lord’s Passover begins at sundown on the fourteenth day of the first month” (Leviticus 23:5). The seventh month can’t also be the first month.

The reason God selected Nisan as the first month is because the very first festival to be perpetually kept by the Jews was that of Passover. You remember: celebratory remembrance of Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian bondage. In effect, Israel became a nation on that inaugural Passover.

Does that mean that the Jews have two months each calendar year that are the beginning of a new year? Yes and no … mostly yes!

Two New Year’s Every Year!

For the observant (Orthodox, Conservative) Jew, but also for the less religious among them, Passover is the first High Holy Day of the year and, therefore, is the beginning of the first ceremonially religious new moon festival month of any given calendar year. But somewhere along the way, Jewish rabbis, priests, and scribes realized that the beginning of human history was much broader and more universal than when God chose Abraham to be the ancestor of the Jewish people. Although they knew that the Jews and Israel had been chosen by God to reveal himself through the Scriptures, to be a light to the Gentiles and to be the source of the Messiah, they also understood that human recording of time itself must begin with God’s creation of the first man and woman … Adam and Eve.

Whether the traditional Jewish calculation of time beginning with Adam is accurate or not, they identified the first day of Tishrei as the beginning of the first year and every New Year, thereafter. Thus, Rosh Hashana is the anniversary of Adam (including Eve even though she was created after Adam) who is the progenitor of the human race. But, they also calculated that it was the day (1st of Tishrei) that Abraham bound Isaac for the sacrifice that God mercifully withheld when Abraham demonstrated that his love for and obedience to God was greater than his love for the child promised by God … Isaac as opposed to Ishmael. So there is both Gentile and Jewish significance to Rosh Hashana, which essentially is the civil or calendar beginning of every year for the Jews. However, for religious festival purposes, Tishrei is still the 7th month of the (religious) year.

Did you get all that? If not, then just think in terms of Rosh Hashana as the first day of the new calendar year for the Jews. Tishrei 1st is the same as our January 1st. Did you also know that many Bible scholars (including me) place the time of Jesus’s birth in the month of Tishrei? But that’s another article for another day.

Naturally, Jews all over the world recognize the Roman (Gentile) or Gregorian calendar as one means of measuring time as each New Year (January 1) rolls over. In that respect, it’s just one of many accepted differences between Jew and Gentile that isn’t significant enough to merit discord or dispute that might result in hostilities between the two peoples. In fact, many Jews also celebrate January 1st alongside their Gentile neighbors, but mostly because it’s just another opportunity to party and/or to be courteous!

Yet, when it comes to commencement of world history in terms of God creating the first man (and woman) in God’s image, the Jews invariably revert to and rely on revered tradition, i.e. that the Jewish calendar is the accurate record of how long man has been on the earth.

Thus the first day of every New Year begins on the 1st of Tishrei, which by the Gregorian calendar is no sooner than September 5th and no later than October 5th. Whereas, some Jews may concede that the Gregorian measurement of time could be a viable representation of recorded history (as long as the 365 days are reduced to 360 days in a year), they adamantly refuse to accept the Gentile demarcation of time before and after Christ. Although Jews in all walks of life will, out of necessity, often refer to historical events in the same manner as Gentiles, ultimately they reserve the right to classify time without reference to BC or AD. Or the contemporary designation to eliminate any reference to Christ by using BCE and CE … before Common Era or Common Era.

The Gregorian calendar tells us that we are in the year 2014. If, however, we use the Jewish calendar, then what New Year began just three days ago? Answer: 5775. Five thousand, seven hundred, seventy-five years ago God first breathed life into Adam and he became a living soul. The Jewish year 5775 actually corresponds with the Gregorian year of 2015.

Whether we use the Jewish calendar or the Roman calendar, I’d like to redirect the emphasis of this article to some eventful milestones in recent Jewish history that correlate remarkably with the Mount Olivet discourse found in Matthew Chapters 24 & 25, in which Jesus announces his return will take place before one specific generation (what I have termed the Omega Generation) passes from the scene. Further, that this final generation will have witnessed significant events (birth pangs), to include the miraculous rebirth of Israel, which must take place before Christ returns to the earth. Although the rebirth of Israel is not specifically referenced in Matthew 24 and 25, it is a clear prerequisite to the Rapture and Physical Return of Christ to the earth, as demonstrated by dozens of Biblical prophecies, particularly in the Old Testament.

Before we define a Biblical generation and examine some key benchmark dates, let’s first review the amazing words of Jesus; a statement that specifies a generational link between the stunning events of the last days and his glorious return.

“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place” (Matthew 24:32-34).

Definition & Applications of Generation with 20th and 21st Century Target Dates

Because this part of today’s article was addressed in a previous Eye of Prophecy article entitled, The Omega Generation, published on 2-15-14 under the category of The Rapture, I will quote from that article.

Excerpt from: The Omega Generation: (in italics)

When Jesus says, “this generation” he is not referring to some vague, unspecified, undefined, ambiguous period of time. Rather, he is identifying the precise generation that will be alive and witness the amazing end time’s events described in Matthew and Luke. In other words, this is a literal, identifiable generation. Scripture gives us two primary designations or parameters of a generation, both of which are measured in real-time.

One Hundred Years: “Then the Lord said to Abram, ‘You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years … After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction’” (Genesis 15: 13-15).

This is a phenomenal prophecy given to Abraham even before Isaac was born, in which God not only talks about the (many) descendants of Abraham; but hundreds of years before the fact announces that they (the Israelites) would be slaves in a foreign land (Egypt), only to return to the Promised Land of Israel. Moreover, God equates a generation to 100 years … 400 hundred years equals four generations. Think about it for a moment. Although unusual (perhaps even rare), there are people the world over who live to be one hundred … some even a few years more. Yet, 100 years of age is pretty much the maximum scope of any given lifetime or generation.

“Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty” (Psalms 90:10).

This insight as to the customary lifespan of a human being was given to Moses, who is the author of Psalms 90, the only Psalm credited to Moses. Again, think about it. By and large, the normal or average lifespan of most people the world over is between 70 and 80 years of age. By seventy, virtually no more children are conceived and birthed by a woman. For all practical purposes, a person who reaches 70 years of age (perhaps a few more years) has lived a generational life-time. They have children and grandchildren who are the progeny of the next generation. King David, himself, died at exactly 70 years of age.

If Jesus is referring specifically to the last generation, and I believe the text/context is crystal clear that he is; then this generation must have a designated start-up date or dates. Without an actual event (which can be identified by a specific calendar year) to begin the generation, the 70-year or 100-year generational time frame is much too vague … meaning there’s too much overlap or ambiguity as to the actual decades involved. If you were explaining your generation to someone, what would be your reference point? How would you describe it? Wouldn’t you say, “In my generation….” Essentially, then, your reference or starting point is the date of your birth!

Using our first example of four generations of Israel’s enslavement in Egypt, God gave Abraham the point-in-time commencement of this 400 hundred years (four generations) captivity, i.e. from the time that the Jews no longer enjoyed freedom in Egypt, which was not too long after Joseph died. Another example is the 70-year Babylonian captivity, which just happened to be the exact length of the 2nd measurement of time for a generation … 70 years. Historically, we know the beginning (586 BC) and end date (516 BC) of this time-designated punishment of Israel.

Is it, then, possible to select or identify events/dates in Israel’s contemporary history that correspond to the Biblical definition of a generation … that is one hundred years and/or seventy years? The answer is a resounding, YES. In fact, we’ve already touched on these dates in the previous three articles. In addition, I partially addressed these events some time ago in the Eye of Prophecy article, entitled, When the Rapture, published 8-10-13, as well as The End of the Age article published 11-23-13.

So, let’s look again at the three monumentally crucial events of the last 100 years, relating to the return of the Jews to Israel.

  1. Balfour Declaration of November, 1917: England extended official support that Palestine could be a home for the Jews. This was the beginning of Jewish autonomy in Israel, although the land was still called Palestine at that time.

Recognizing this very important event/date, we can then apply the Biblical generational measurement of 100 years. Once again, however, we need to convert Roman calendar years to Jewish years. Doing the math we come up with 101.4 Jewish years which translates to 101 years and 5 months. From November, 1917, this would take us to March or April, 2019.

2.  United Nations Resolution of November, 1947: UN voted to grant statehood rights to the Jews; the nation would be called Israel. (May 14, 1948, David Ben Gurion proclaimed the reborn existence of the State of Israel!).

This was the 2nd significant milestone in fulfillment of hundreds of Biblical prophecies concerning the Abrahamic Covenant, i.e. the physical restoration of Israel. Most Bible scholars and historians select the statehood date of May 14, 1948 as the historical landmark, which it certainly is; however, the actual declaration of statehood was almost anticlimactic. Reason: officially, the British Mandate (rule) over Palestine expired on that date. But it was the UN Resolution that delivered the pivotal turning point or breakthrough. Without the UN resolution of November, 1947, there would have been no recognized Israeli State in May, 1948. Yet, there is only a period of 6 months separating these two events; thus, selection of either one would be a legitimate application to the 70-year generational measurement of time.

Again, doing the conversion math, we arrive at a total of 70.97 or (rounding it off) 71 Jewish years. Adding 71 years to November, 1947, we arrive at November, 2018. If we utilize May, 1948 as the benchmark date, the 71 years would take us to May, 2019.

3.  June, 1967 Six-Day War (Jubilee Years): In addition to the two Biblical measurements of a generation (100 years and 70 years), what happens if we also select the Jubilee time-frame of 50 years? As stressed in the previous seven times seven articles, the 50-year Jubilee was part of God’s formula for disciplining Israel, as the Jews also failed to keep the Jubilee. Consequently, I believe the Jubilee will also be a component part of God’s magnificent restoration of Israel.

In this instance, we will use the next epic milestone in Israel’s brief modern-history … that of the June, 1967 Six-Day War. We talked about this at great length in last week’s article, to include the fact that it occurred 50 years (not coincidentally, a Jubilee period of time) from the Balfour Declaration of 1917.

Once again we convert 50 Roman calendar years to Jewish time and we come up with: 50.7 years which is 50 years and 8.4 months (8-9 months). From June, 1967, this would take us through February or into March, 2018.

We’ll conclude today’s article with a final excerpt from Omega Generation, but first we need to determine which year of the Jewish calendar fits with the Roman calendar and its conversion to Jewish years as identified above. What then might be the Jewish calendar year when the Day of the Lord begins (with the Rapture extending through the seven-years of tribulation) and why?

Answer: The year 5777. Which begins at sundown on October 2, 2016 until Rosh Hashana approximately a year later in 2017.

Reasons: The year of 5777 fits quite nicely with the Gregorian year of 2017: One hundred year generation after the Balfour declaration, 70 years after the UN resolution of Israel’s statehood in 1947, and 50 years of Jubilee after recapture of Jerusalem in 1967.

It has everything to do with the numbers in this year. Five, then three sevens. Time doesn’t permit an in-depth examination of the number seven, or the number three (three sevens, i.e. 7, 7, 7). Except to say that both numbers are clearly and Biblically associated with God and divinity.

What about the number five? Some Christians attribute this number as symbolically depicting God’s grace and redemption. Although a case could be made to confirm this connection, an even stronger argument can be presented to establish a link between God’s gracious interactions with the Jews.

  • There are five books in the Torah or what Gentile Christians call the Pentateuch … Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. These books are also called, The Book of the Law or the Mosaic Law.
  • In the original Tabernacle there were five curtains, five pillars, five sockets, and an altar that was five cubits long and five cubits wide.
  • There were five kinds of offerings periodically required of the Hebrews: Burnt, sin, trespass, grain, and peace offerings. (Note: The entire sacrificial offering system was a demonstration of God’s grace, forgiveness, freedom from sin, and on-going restoration of the Jews. The sole purpose for these offerings was repeated atonement for breaking of God’s laws and gratitude for his pardon of their sins and provisions for their welfare).
  • There were five parts of the Holy Oil used to anoint the priests and separate all things used in the Tabernacle as holy instruments for God’s use. Moreover, this Holy Oil is a distinct representation of the Holy Spirit, given to each believer, Jew and Gentile alike, after the Covenant Age of Grace was instituted by Christ sacrifice for our sins, which ended the daily and yearly Jewish animal sacrificial system.

Summary

Back to the final excerpt quote from Omega Generation article:

Now comes the really exciting feature of all these conversion tables and what you might consider to be some boring mathematics. First, none of these three possibilities give us an exact day/hour of Christ’s return that begins with the first phase which is the Rapture and ends with his physical return at the end of the Tribulation. And that’s good. Why? Because Jesus, himself, said that no one can possibly know the day or hour of his return. I emphasize that almost to a fault in my article, When the Rapture. Therefore, I wouldn’t even pretend to know the exact date of Christ’s return, nor would I ever venture a guess. Forget it!

On the contrary, Jesus did advise us to recognize the seasons, the times, the signs, and the symptoms if you will, of his glorious return. If he didn’t want us to put 2 and 2 together, then why did Jesus provide so many clues and signals? Why would he have even used the metaphor of the fig tree in bloom? Even more challenging: Why would he have selected a time-measured or time-dedicated point of reference (generation), if he didn’t want us to identify the noteworthy bench mark events of the final days, aligned alongside the pre-Rapture birth pains and post-Rapture (Tribulation) incidents that he describes.

Things to Ponder

The Lord will return at the appointed time, which is his time alone. But that time will be on a specific day in a specific year. He might choose a date that would match up with the Jewish calendar or with the Gregorian calendar or both. Would be just like the Lord to synthesize and/or overlap these dates, by giving both the Jewish and Gentile (Christian) calendars mutual consideration and credibility as a means of identifying the equally important events of the Rapture (for the church) and physical return of Christ (on behalf of Israel).

Meaning that the beginning of the Day of the Lord, which is the Rapture, could take place during the Jewish year of 5777 through 5780, with the corresponding Gregorian years of 2016 through 2019.

Whatever the date—today, tomorrow, next year, or 2017 (5777)—I will say what I’ve said before: I would be very surprised if the Rapture doesn’t take place by the end of the year 2020!

That statement is NOT a presumptuous prediction nor is it far-fetched conjecture. Rather, I prefer to call it spiritual speculation as it is based on Biblically supported evidence by means of careful correlation between Bible passages and connection with recent historical milestones affecting the nation of Israel.

Please understand … the physical return of Christ to the earth has everything to do with Israel. The Rapture is only a prelude to the Day of the Lord, but what an overture it will be: Resurrection of the dead in Christ and the transfiguration of both the living and dead in Christ with new immortal bodies like our Lord.

And away we will go!

Archangel Michael, body of Moses, Satan

THE TWO WITNESSES (Part III)

Last week Elijah. This week Moses!

Once again, it’s important to grasp the astounding fact that Moses (and Elijah) accompanied Jesus on the mountaintop in person, with their actual earthly bodies given to them at birth. They did not yet inhabit the eternal bodies that all believers will someday be given at the Rapture’s resurrection of the dead (I Corinthians 15). If you like, please revisit the first five articles on the Eye of Prophecy blog site, pertaining to the What, Why, When, Who, and How of the Rapture.

How, then, was it possible for Moses to appear in bodily form with Jesus and Elijah if he had already died? We need not ask that question of Elijah because he was taken to heaven without dying, as last week’s article probed in some detail. To solve this perplexing puzzle, let’s begin with a few verses in the last chapter of Deuteronomy that record the death of Moses.

“So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, just as the Lord had said. The Lord buried him in a valley near Beth-peor in Moab, but to this day no one knows the exact place. Moses was 120 years old when he died, yet his eyesight was clear, and he was as strong as ever” (Deuteronomy 34: 5-7).

Does anything in this passage strike you as just a bit unusual? If we were discussing these verses in person or by phone, I’d pause here and give you a few seconds to think about what was just read. But since most people continue reading whatever they’re reading, I’ll get right to the point; unless, you want to stop here and chew on the passage for a couple of minutes … then, by all means do so!

First, in all of Scripture or in the chronicles of mankind, where else are we told that God, himself, buried someone?! Quick, easy answer: Nowhere else. Secondly, not only did the Lord bury Moses, he also concealed the burial site. Why wouldn’t God have allowed Moses to be buried the traditional way in a conspicuous tomb where all of Israel could visit and venerate the burial site, much like Abraham, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, or Joseph’s graves?

Thirdly, the text strongly implies that Moses was still in good health. This inference is conveyed by the physical description of good eyesight and a (still) strong body. No reading glasses, no hearing aids, no disease, no crippling injuries, no excessive wear and tear on this rugged body of a great prophet who had wandered the Judean wilderness for some forty years … beginning at the age of eighty! When some folks tell you how old they are or how old a good friend is, they often will say, “She’s 80 years young.” And we get the picture, even if the person has wrinkles within wrinkles. Not so with Moses: when Scripture says he was as strong as ever, it means Moses was, in fact, 120 years young!

Not only that, the preceding verses of this passage tell us that Moses’ death had been planned by God for that very hour and in the exact place where God told Moses to go. If you recall the story, Moses and Joshua—and by implication the tribes of Israel—knew why Moses climbed the mountains of Moab … to see the Promised Land that he would never enter, but also to die.

Why such a mysterious passing? Why so secretive? What does it have to do with Moses reappearing over a thousand years later with Elijah and Jesus—though time in heaven is on a different measuring scale altogether … a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day. (II Peter 3:8).

It’s good that you’re asking these questions! Because there are answers. And the key is found in one of most obscure, enigmatic passages in all of Scripture … one verse that has baffled even the most astute Bible scholars and students. The understanding of this passage only “came to me” (which is another way of saying that the Lord graciously disclosed it) during the enormous amount of study, research, preparation, and analysis during the writing of my book, Out of the Abyss … can the number of the beast be solved, 666?

Though I have seldom quoted from this book in the forty-seven articles written to date for the Eye of Prophecy blog site, I’d like to refer to some paragraphs from Out of the Abyss pertaining to the subject at hand. But first we’ll begin with the verse in question, one that presents a very brief but riveting scene involving two powerful angelic beings and a mighty prophet whose body was the topic of a high level earthly and/or heavenly debate. Incidentally, there’s nothing symbolic whatsoever about this passage. We see two real angels engaged in a real-life quarrel over the disposition of a real prophet’s dead body.

“But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse the devil of blasphemy, but simply said, ‘The Lord rebuke you’ (This took place when Michael was arguing with the devil about Moses body.)” (Jude, verse 9).

Excerpts from Out of the Abyss, Chapter 25: pages 243-246):

“Why on earth, or under the earth, or above the earth would Satan argue with the archangel Michael over Moses body? What was it Lucifer disputed?”

I then go on to answer this question.

“At this point in Biblical history, it had been the destiny of every person on earth to die, except Enoch. Man’s sin resulted in the curse of death … At the time of Moses, there had not yet been any physical evidence of bodily resurrection from the dead … the fact was then, and still is today: a person’s body stays in the grave and decays. Not until the Rapture of Christians and the subsequent Great White Throne Judgment of all unbelievers, will there be a permanent bodily resurrection from the grave….

“Why was Satan so bent out of shape over the body of Moses? The only rational, logical explanation is that Michael, on orders from God, had arrived to take the body of Moses directly to heaven. In fact, can you think of any other reason? This may also explain why no one knew where God had buried Moses. For that matter, how often does God directly bury someone himself, let alone conceal the burial site?

“Moses would be raised from the grave with his original body intact, and this didn’t set well with Satan. As we’ve seen, Satan can and does confront God, i.e. the story of Job and the temptation of Jesus. Arguing with the archangel Michael is no problem for Satan. It is entirely credible that Satan reminded Michael (and God) that the curse of sin was physical death and bodily decay. God had no right to make an exception to this rule, as it was God’s decree in the first place that Adam and Eve would surely die if they sinned.

“In no uncertain terms, Michael reminded Satan that God is in control; God has the final say in all things. If the Lord wanted to take Enoch from the earth directly to heaven and later Elijah, then the Lord would do just that. Same thing with Moses; the only difference is that Moses had died, but that’s a mere technicality with God.

“Remember, too, the Mount of Transfiguration … Since Christ had not yet died and arose from the grave, neither Elijah nor Moses would yet possess the resurrected new body given to all believers. The only explanation is that both prophets still inhabit their original bodies, albeit through some special divine preservation, not known to us this side of eternity. Actually, if a thousand years is a day in heaven, then no preservation is needed! Moses has been in heaven a little over three days; Elijah has been there approximately two and a half days.

“Thus, a strong case could be made that God, through the Archangel Michael, took Moses bodily from the grave. Whether God restored him to life before, during, or after his escort from the grave … well those of us going to heaven can ask Moses when we get there. Why else would only God know the exact burial-place of Moses in Moab?”

Moses & Elijah as the Two Tribulation Prophets

By now, I trust that God’s appointment of these great prophets to be the two witnesses of the Great Tribulation is self-evident. But to put the finishing touches on some of the most intriguing passages in the Bible (concerning the two lampstands, the two olive trees, the two heavenly beings, the two prophets, the two witnesses … all designations of Elijah and Moses), let’s briefly review the two heavenly beings who, “stand in the court of the Lord of all the earth (Zechariah 4) and the two prophets who “stand before the Lord of all the earth,” (Revelation 11) as introduced in Part I of this three-part series.

If Moses and Elijah are, indeed, the two heavenly beings and the two prophets that stand before the Lord of all the earth, then we might pose the question: Are there any other Biblical references to these two heroic prophets that would further validate and qualify them as the Two Witnesses during the Great Tribulation? I must say: I hadn’t thought of searching for additional documentation until writing this article, Part III of the series. I was and still am convinced that evidence presented thus far sufficiently stands alone as res ipsa loquitur (the thing speaks for itself). Mostly out of curiosity I reviewed more Scripture that records the remarkable lives of these two great men of God. What I found was nothing short of astonishing.

Moses: Most of us remember Moses and the burning bush. “When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ ‘Here I am!’ Moses replied. ‘Do not come any closer,’ the Lord warned. ‘Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob…’” (Exodus 3: 4-6, italics for emphasis).

Where was Moses? What was he doing? Answer: he was standing on Mount Sinai in the very presence of the Lord. Only the Lord of all the earth could ignite a bush and keep it burning indefinitely. Moses was, therefore, standing before the Lord of the earth!

Another spectacular scene: “The Lord replied to Moses, ‘I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.’ Moses responded, ‘Then show me your glorious presence.’ The Lord replied, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you … But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.’ The Lord continued, ‘Look, stand near me on this rock. As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen’” (Exodus 33: 17-23, italics for emphasis).

What an awesome privilege for anyone, even for Moses, to STAND before the true and living God! In fact, especially for Moses, who had fled from Egypt for killing an Egyptian; and then had tended flocks of sheep and goats for forty years on the back side of the desert. From a humble Shepard to a mighty Prophet … just like that!

Elijah: “Later on, in the third year of the drought, the Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain’” (I Kings 18:1).

Accordingly, Elijah sought out Obadiah–an official in charge of Ahab’s palace–to arrange a meeting with the king; which later led to Elijah’s confrontation with King Ahab and the prophets of Baal. Obadiah pleaded with Elijah to excuse him from this dangerous mission. If you’re curious as to the reason Obadiah was afraid, please read verses 7-14 of this first chapter.

Obadiah concludes his desperate appeal to dissuade Elijah with these words, “Sir, if I do that, Ahab will certainly kill me” (verse 14).

Now then, if I could pause this article and insert a video or even an audio of a drum roll, I’d certainly do so! Why? Because Elijah’s reply is yet another perfectly placed thread that would later be woven into the majestic tapestry of God’s prophetic sovereignty! Of the countless possibilities of what Elijah could have said or how he could have responded to Obadiah, here is what he said:

“…I swear by the Lord Almighty, in whose presence I stand, that I will present myself to Ahab this very day” (I Kings 18:15, italics for emphasis). Amazing! This is much more than just a figure of speech. Elijah was telling Obadiah and all readers of the text exactly what the Lord revealed to Zechariah and later to John of Revelation: Elijah (like Moses) had the unimaginable privilege of standing before the Lord of all the earth. Literally!

Which gives us a whole new understanding of why the Lord initially answers Zechariah’s question with a question. Zechariah asked the Lord, “What are these two olive trees on each side of the lampstand, and what are the two olive branches….?” (Zechariah 4:11-12). To which the Lord replies, “Don’t you know?” Zechariah answers, “No, my Lord.” (Verse 13). Then the Lord answers Zechariah’s question: “They represent the two heavenly beings who stand in the court of the Lord of all the earth” (Verse 14).

My first thought when I studied these verses in preparation for these articles was: The Lord’s question was much too hard, bordering on unfair. (It’s evident that this wasn’t a pass/fail test question from the Lord, or even that Zechariah was absolutely expected to know the answer). Nevertheless, the question was asked. How in the world could Zechariah know the answer to such a question? But he could have known! And probably did know … but not then and there off the top of his head, particularly in the context of this overwhelming scene in which the Lord is showing him these mysterious prophetic visions.

How/why could Zechariah have known? Because, as a prophet, I’m sure he was well versed in those Scriptures already written by Moses and those written about Elijah, enough to make a connection (with plenty of advance notice) between the symbolism of the two olive trees/lampstands and their actual correlation to Moses and Elijah’s standing before the Lord. Yet, no one, including the best of Bible scholars and including Zechariah, can come up with a Biblical answer to a tough question all the time at any given time … just like that!

Right then and there Zechariah didn’t put two and two together to realize that Moses and Elijah were these two olive trees … heavenly beings.

And once again for emphasis: what two men stood with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration?

Summary

Throughout Old Testament history, we often read about encounters between faithful true prophets of God and deceitful false prophets of Israel, pagan prophets of other gods, or kings—both Jewish and gentile. One example is another remarkable incident involving Elijah; which, to me, is just as impressive as his confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. It’s found in the first chapter of II Kings. If you have time, please read it.

A brief summary will show that Israel’s King Ahaziah needlessly sacrificed one hundred of his soldiers on the altar of pride … they were incinerated by fire from heaven called down by Elijah. All of them would have been spared and Ahaziah could have survived injuries sustained in a fall, if the king had only humbled himself just a little and politely asked Elijah to prophecy whether the King would live or die. Instead, Ahaziah first sought the advice of a non-existent pagan god; then later tried to force Elijah (have him arrested) to speak to the king. Moral of the story: There is only one true and living God, who listens and responds to the humble, but resists the proud.

Why should the Great Tribulation be any different? The absolutely unique and providential last moments of Moses’ and Elijah’s time on this earth can be attributed to the fact that God had chosen them—in addition to their monumental deeds on the earth during their time of service—to represent the Lord in a titanic battle against Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet during the last days.

When evil rears its ugly head to the extent that the wicked perpetrators claim to be divine rulers; and when they perform signs and wonders to deceive those who follow them and those who don’t; and when the havoc they wreak and atrocities they inflict begin to spread exponentially; but most of all when they claim universal authority as a god or even as God, then enough is enough. God will intervene with miraculous power that will indisputably demonstrate who is God and who is not. There are numerous examples of this in Scripture, not the least of which are Moses vs. Pharaoh and Elijah vs. prophets of Baal.

In the context of all of the natural, supernatural, and otherwise apocalyptic Tribulation happenings, especially the seal, trumpet, and vial judgments, followed by the majestic return of Jesus Christ, I believe three of the most enormous events will be: (1) the amazing reappearance of the beast (Nero) from the underworld, with millions upon millions of those left behind giving him their complete allegiance, and eventually worship. (2) The authority given to the False Prophet to perform miracles (to deceive) on behalf of the Antichrist. (3) The 3 ½ years of colossal miracles and devastation administered by Moses and Elijah to rival and trump the accomplishments of the unholy trinity.

For a brief moment, God allows the Antichrist to finally defeat the Two Witnesses, over which the entire world gloats; even to the extent of giving gifts to each other to celebrate the death of, “…the two prophets who had tormented them” (Revelation 11:10). But this wild reveling will last all of three and a half days. After that period of time, “…God breathed life into them, and they stood up! Terror struck all who were staring at them. Then a loud voice from heaven called to the two prophets. ‘Come up here!’ And they rose to heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched” (Revelation 11:11-12).

Try that on for size, Mr. Six Hundred and sixty-six! Duplicate that, O False Prophet! Top that, Satan!

What do you mean, you can’t! Run out of miracles, have you? Had enough? Ready to stand down? No? Then prepare yourselves unholy trinity for a crushing defeat in that great and terrible day of the Lord. In that day you will unwittingly fulfill the words of the prophet: “Say to the nations far and wide: Get ready for war! Call out your best warriors. Let all your fighting men advance for the attack … Come quickly, all you nations everywhere. Gather together in the valley. Let the nations be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There, I, the Lord will sit to pronounce judgment on them all” (Joel 3: 9-12).

Heed the word of the Lord’s prophet: “Thousands upon thousands are waiting in the valley of decision. There the day of the Lord will soon arrive. The sun and the moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine. The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will shake….” (Joel 3: 14-16).

On that day, “…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2: 10-11). Yes, ungodly, counterfeit trinity … that includes you!

Things to Ponder

Moses and Elijah will experience yet another divine transportation and entrance into heaven. This time it will mirror the Rapture that several years earlier had taken hundreds of millions from the earth. This time their prophetic mission on earth will be complete. This time they will finally possess the everlasting glorified spiritual bodies that they were promised, and so patiently waited for.

One day soon, I and, I hope, you and millions of others (the host of heaven) will praise and worship our wonderful Heavenly Father and his Messiah, our redeemer who will rule and reign from Jerusalem. And we will have all eternity to listen to the same mighty deeds and even more stories from Moses and Elijah and David and Isaiah and Jeremiah and Daniel and Ezekiel and Noah and Paul and John and…

THE TWO WITNESSES (Part II)

Other than the magnificent return of Jesus Christ to rescue the world from annihilation and to set up his kingdom of righteousness, justice, and peace, one of the greatest showdowns ever witnessed by mankind will pit the Antichrist and his false prophet against two mighty prophets of God… Moses and Elijah. Just as the Antichrist beast of Revelation (Nero) and his statue will spellbound those left behind at the Rapture by his improbable return from the grave, as the world will see it (he actually reappears from the Abyss); so, too, will the Two Witnesses dumbfound billions with their incredibly mysterious return from the ancient past. Just as the False Prophet will amaze and intimidate the earth’s population with powerful signs and wonders; so, too, will Moses stun the world with miracles not seen since the Exodus or since Elijah soundly defeated the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel.

With the Scriptural documentation presented in last week’s article that focused on the astonishing correlation between what the two witnesses of Revelation 11 will do and what Elijah and Moses did during their prophetic service for God thousands of years ago, I believe we have established a near irrefutable premise THAT these two extraordinary prophets are, in fact, the two witnesses of Revelation. Now it’s time to provide evidence demonstrating WHY Moses and Elijah will be God’s choice as the two lampstands, the two olive trees; indeed, the two witnesses/prophets that will do supernatural battle with Satan’s dynamic, but totally depraved, duo. Let’s begin with:

ELIJAH:

It’s one of the most fascinating and well-known events of Scripture, one that is taught in Sunday school classes all over the world … at least it used to be taught! To what do you think I’m referring—pertaining to, of course, Elijah, and more specifically his final days on earth? My guess is that some readers already guessed it. But, if not, then here we go:

“Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River. Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground! When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.’ And Elisha replied, ‘Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.’ ‘You have asked a difficult thing,’ Elijah replied. ‘If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. But if not, then you won’t’” (II Kings 2:7-10).

*Note: The text clearly tells us that Elijah already knew what was about to take place. And the preceding verses inform us that Elisha and dozens of other Jewish prophets also knew that Elijah was to be taken (although they didn’t know when or how it would happen or where Elijah would be taken or what would happen after that) by the Lord.

Sure enough. Right then and there it happened!

“As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven” (II Kings 2:11).

All of God’s miracles are awesome, but a handful are off the charts. Elijah’s extraordinary exit from this earth may just be one of those top ten. Now that we’ve been reminded of this real life beam me up spectacle (for the very young readers … refer to Star Trek), there are some relevant questions to ask and answer and observations to be made:

A Better Understanding of Elijah’s Departure from the Earth

The first question and answer will be presented by quoting an excerpt from by book, Out of the Abyss. “To what destination was Elijah transported? Correct: to heaven … Moreover a flaming chariot carried him. Obviously this was a heavenly chariot and heavenly team of horses capable of transferring Elijah to heaven … Talk about a joy ride! Beats any roller coaster, race car, speed boat, supersonic jet, or spaceship known to man. As is said, ‘What a way to go!’”

It may surprise you to know that many Christians, even those who read the Bible on a regular basis, have difficulty answering—off the top of their head—the question of Elijah’s ultimate destination, including me many years ago; even though it should be fairly obvious. They’re very familiar with the story of how he was taken, but aren’t sure exactly where Elijah ended up in/with the chariot of fire. If you know where he was taken, then say it aloud right now. If you don’t, then read the passage again, or simply refer to the quote from Out of the Abyss in the preceding paragraph.

Yes, Elijah was taken to heaven. Before you say, “duh,” think about the implication of someone, anyone transported to heaven in that fashion—or any manner in which there are dozens of witnesses. If you do, the first thing that might come to mind is that such an event is unusual … to say the least. More like, “are you kidding me!”

Next question: Was Elijah alive or dead when he was whisked away to heaven? Okay, I realize that’s not only an easy question; it borders on being mundanely simple. But I ask it to emphasize what’s taking place here: the fact that the prophet Elijah was transported to heaven in his earthly body! Not only is the event itself a mind-boggling miracle, so is the very idea of someone leaving this earth without experiencing death. And, we’re not talking about a space flight to the moon!

Although it’s obvious that Elijah was removed from the earth alive, physically intact, I’m underscoring how often something like this doesn’t happen. In fact, it’s never occurred before or since, except for one time. Do you remember who else was taken (also to heaven) without dying? Correct: Enoch … see Genesis Chapter 5 and Hebrews Chapter 11.

Concerning Enoch, some Bible scholars and students believe he will be the other Revelation 11 witness/prophet alongside Elijah, for the very fact just covered … they both were taken from the earth without dying. Time/space does not permit in this article, except to say the following about Enoch, compared to Moses and Elijah as the two appropriate choices.

– Unlike Moses and Elijah who were prophets (as are the two witnesses), Scripture does not indicate that Enoch was a prophet, in the context of how prophets are defined and described in Scripture.

– Moses and Elijah were the two men who attended and spoke with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration, not Enoch. This is tremendously significant, as I believe (and will demonstrate later in this article) the very fact that it was Moses and Elijah with Christ on the mountaintop further validates them as the two Revelation witnesses.

– Enoch is the one exact, exclusive prototype of born-again believers who will be taken in the rapture, prior to God’s second judgment of the earth during the Great Tribulation. Enoch was taken from the earth prior to the first monumental judgment of God … the Great Flood.

– And, of course, as explained in last week’s article, the God empowered miracles that Moses and Elijah performed while on the earth are identical to the magnificent exploits of the two witnesses for 3 ½ years during the Tribulation.

Back to Elijah. Let’s examine an astounding phenomenon that I alluded to earlier: The fact that Elijah (and Moses) appeared in bodily form with Christ … as the disciples Peter, James, and John watched in utter amazement. I can assure you both from the text and the context of this remarkable event, that Moses and Elijah were NOT spirits. None of the gospel accounts indicate in any way, shape, or form that Moses and Elijah appeared as spirits. In fact, how could Elijah be merely a spirit if he left the earth in his physical body? And later on we’ll see how that applies also to Moses, even though he died!

Plus, departed spirits of human beings cannot, therefore, do not reappear on the earth. This is God’s chosen way of things pertaining to the multiple dimensions he’s created, as well as his template for the human race following Adam and Eve’s disobedience which resulted in both spiritual death and physical death (separation of soul/spirit from the body). But God didn’t leave man is such an eternal mess, that we’ve made for ourselves. Through believing and receiving his Son, Messiah Jesus, all those who die will one day be reunited body and spirit, into a whole new glorified spiritual body (I Corinthians 15). For now, however, we humans are confined to the dimension of space and time as they exist on this earth. Angels (and demons who are fallen angels) have access between physical earthly dimensions and heavenly/spiritual zones.

Spirits and Ghosts

Nowhere in Scripture do we find evidence of anyone returning to earth as a spirit … a ghost. It just doesn’t happen. Sorry, Casper; no matter how friendly of a fictitious ghost you were, there will never be any “real” ghosts on this planet … not the kind that is someone’s disembodied apparition. Those kind of things must be relegated to science fiction and/or Hollywood, such as the movie Ghost, with Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore.

That also applies to Samuel, as King Saul observed the departed/dead prophet as a man with a body, not as some eerie phantom. Samuel’s physical appearance is even described by the witch of Endor to Samuel. You might want to glance I Samuel 28: 11-14, to see first-hand how stunned the witch of Endor was at the actual physical reappearance of Samuel; which, in and of itself, is a rare exception allowed by God, concerning reappearance of someone who has died. Plus, the Lord didn’t (permanently) raise Samuel from the dead at that time.

The witch was accustomed to seeing spirits; however, these spirits were not actually human beings. They were demons. When the witch saw Samuel, she described him to Saul as a god. She simply didn’t know how else to explain what was happening. I’ve often wondered if this witch gave up witchcraft after experiencing the real thing … meaning an actual person and his body (temporarily) returning from the dead, rather than demonic spirits imitating someone who had died.

In that regard, I do believe that demon spirits (fallen angels) can and have occasionally taken the form of a person, whose family/friends wanted to communicate with, via occult séances and the like. But, it is not the person they’re seeing … it’s a demonic impersonation. A good example is the story of the rich man and the poor man, Lazarus, both of whom had died. Even though the rich man presented a perfectly logical reason to return to the earth (to warn his brothers about hell), he was not allowed to do so in any form—physical, spiritual, or otherwise.

When those who believe in Christ (including those who believed in the promise of his coming before he came to earth as the chosen Messiah) die, their spirits immediately go to heaven; awaiting the Rapture resurrection of the dead and a glorified body equipped to live in Heaven for all eternity. Sadly, for those who refuse to accept Christ as their personal Savior, their spirits go to Hades (hell), also awaiting resurrection at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20) and then everlasting banishment to the Lake of Fire. But departed spirits of believers or unbelievers do not remain on or roam the earth or return to the earth. That simply cannot be found in Scripture.

So, if anyone tells you they’ve actually seen a ghost, please don’t tell them not to worry, or be afraid. They have every reason to be concerned. Because if they truly did see an apparition, you can bet it was a demon trying to or actually taking the (rough) form of someone who has died. Satan and his demons have this kind of limited power … for now.

The Resurrection of the Dead

To further understand the shocking implication of the bodily appearance of Elijah and Moses with Christ, we need to remember that the glorious transfiguration of Jesus took place before he arose from the dead after his cruel death on the cross. Scripture is crystal clear that Jesus would be and actually was the very first to arise from the dead, with the new, eternal resurrection body that would last forever. I italicized the last portion of this statement to emphasize that there were a handful of others who were raised from the dead by Elijah, Elisha, Peter, Paul, and of course, Jesus. But those raised from the dead (at the time) did, in fact, die again. In other words, they were raised with their earthly bodies and then died again with those same bodies. Not until the sacrificial death of Christ would anyone be raised from the dead with everlasting bodies like our Lord possesses in heaven right now as we speak.

Mostly, this will take place at the Rapture; however, the gospel of Matthew indicates that some arose from their graves in Jerusalem immediately after Christ died on the cross. Once Christ died, the resurrection was a given … as declared by the Scriptures and as purposed by God from the beginning of time. That doesn’t make the resurrection any less spectacular and supernatural. It’s just that when Christ (who is God) said he would be tortured, crucified, buried, but rise the third day … that’s exactly what he meant and that’s precisely what would and did happen!

Thus, there’s no way that Elijah or Moses could have been spirits or have appeared in their eternal resurrected bodies on the Mount of Transfiguration, as Christ hadn’t yet died and arisen from the grave. In fact, both Moses and Elijah are still awaiting (as are all believers in Christ, both dead and alive) their new, everlasting “spiritual bodies.” Please see I Corinthians Chapter 15 for Paul’s amazing explanation of the different types of bodies throughout God’s creation.

Which totally qualifies Elijah and Moses as two heavenly beings who stand before the Lord of all the earth, as recorded by Zechariah and then by John in Revelation. The reason this appellation of heavenly beings is utilized is because the two olive trees (as symbolically portrayed by Zechariah and John in Revelation) have resided in heaven, but in their original earthly bodies!

They are heavenly beings because they currently dwell in heaven, but are (human) beings still in possession of their original body. And the reason the equally unusual designation of the Lord of all the earth is employed, relates to the power that Christ has over death and life on the earth; to the extent that he can make supernatural exceptions to the normal cycle of life and death, and provide a special place in heaven where Elijah and Moses exist in their earthly body until their appointed time to return during the Great Tribulation.

Thus, Christ is Lord of the earth when it came to taking Elijah from the earth without dying, and, as we soon shall see, reviving Moses after Moses died! Yes, you read that right. In next week’s article we’ll discover just how that happened by examining two other mysterious Biblical passages to support the choice of Moses, as one of the Two Witnesses, alongside Elijah.

Things to Ponder

“But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless … And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died” (I Corinthians 15: 12-20).

“On the way they were asking each other, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, but the angel said, ‘Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! … Now go and tell his disciples….’” (Mark 16: 3-7).

HE IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN, INDEED!

The Two Witnesses (Part I)

THE TWO WITNESSES (Part I)

Of the dozens of remarkable prophetic visions experienced by John, author of the book of Revelation, one of the most fascinating is found in the first fourteen verses of Chapter 11. Most Bible commentators simply refer to this passage under the heading of, The Two Witnesses. In the previous Eye of Prophecy articles entitled, The False Prophet (Parts I and II), we introduced these two witnesses who are also referred to as prophets; and we identified them as Moses and Elijah, who will take on the False Prophet and his boss, the Antichrist.

Moses and Elijah are the most popular and logical choices; but are they, indeed, the two witnesses? What is the nature and extent of Biblical evidence to support these selections over other Old Testament prophets or over two modern-day men whom God might choose? And, what is the practical significance of identifying these two prophets as Moses and Elijah? In other words, what difference will it make who they are? Let’s see if we can answer those questions, thereby, elevating your interest and excitement for the return of our Lord to an even higher level!

Although Revelation Chapter 11 is, by far, the most well-known passage—to some the only source—that announces the incredible arrival and accomplishments of these two men, there is another mysterious Biblical scene that first introduces these mighty prophets of God. Hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Zechariah presents a startling portrait of these two men, by referring to them as “two olive trees,” and then explaining that the two trees, “…represent the two heavenly beings who stand in the court of the Lord of all the earth.” Let’s read Zechariah’s intriguing description:

“Then the angel who had been talking with me returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep. ‘What do you see now?’ he asked. I answered, ‘I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl of oil on top of it … And I see two olive trees, one on each side of the bowl.’ Then I asked the angel, ‘What are these, my lord? What do they mean?’” (Zechariah 4: 1-4).

Note: The angel, who is the Lord (pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, because Zechariah addresses him as Lord), doesn’t actually answer Zechariah’s specific question; instead the Lord talks about Zerubbabel and the Temple. So once again Zechariah inquires:

“Then I asked the angel, ‘What are these two olive trees on each side of the lampstand, and what are the two olive branches that pour out golden oil through two gold tubes?’ ‘Don’t you know?’ he asked. ‘No, my lord,’ I replied. Then he said to me, ‘They represent the two heavenly beings who stand in the court of the Lord of all the earth’” (Zechariah 4: 11-14).

Why or how can we match these two olive trees with the two witnesses of Revelation 11? And why did the angel designate these two men as heavenly beings? And not just heavenly beings, but “the two heavenly beings.”

Comparing Zechariah 4 with Revelation 11

Now let’s read a portion of Revelation 11 to verify that the two witnesses or prophets are, in fact, one and the same as the two heavenly beings described in Zechariah. “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will be clothed in burlap and will prophesy during those 1260 days. These two prophets are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of all the earth” (Revelation 11: 3-4).

First, the terminology of olive trees and lampstands in Revelation precisely fits the descriptive language used by Zechariah. Secondly, the angel in Revelation is telling John that these two men, are “the two olive trees and the two lampstands…” with a reliable contextual and grammatical deduction that the men are the two olive trees, meaning the two men (heavenly beings) alluded to by Zechariah, in one of the many end-times prophecies recorded by Zechariah. The is a definite article that refers to something or someone already identified, presuming to exist, and separated from any and all other similar objects or people. To support what I’m saying, let’s refer to Webster’s Dictionary for one of several definitions and uses of “the.”

“Used as a function word to indicate that a following noun or noun equivalent is definite or has been previously specified by context or by circumstance … to indicate that a noun is a unique or a particular member of its class.” (Italics for emphasis).

Secondly, if the two prophets of Revelation had not already been referenced in Scripture, then John would have said: “These two prophets are two olive trees and two lampstands…” And, he probably would not have even used the modifier two; because if these prophets of Revelation were being introduced for the first time, it would be misleading to utilize the definite article or the adjective two. But John doesn’t say that; rather he states, “The two olive trees and the two lampstands.” Do you see the difference?

Thirdly, both passages declare that these two men (called heavenly beings, witnesses, prophets) “stand before the Lord of all the earth.” Prior to Revelation 11, where else in Scripture do we find a reference to anyone standing before the Lord of all the earth? Nowhere else in Scripture do we find two men or beings or anyone else standing before the Lord of all the earth, except in Zechariah Chapter 4. The significance of this: It further narrows down and links the two passages one with the other, to the point that it would be extremely difficult not to make a connection. In fact, it would be a huge oversight … tantamount to literary neglect if no correlation was made.

Revelation Chapter 11 uses the same symbolic analogy as does Zechariah by referring to the two witnesses/prophets as olive trees. However, Revelation also tells us that the prophets are “two lampstands.” Although Zechariah employs the symbolism of a lampstand, he doesn’t metaphorically call these two men lampstands. Does that create a problem with the otherwise clear premise that Zechariah and Revelation are referring to the same two people? No, I don’t believe it is an issue. Why? Because, as will be explained in just a short while, the use of the terms olive trees and lampstands are, in fact, symbolic … meaning they are allegorical representations of (in this case) real people. Those (two) real people are called: witnesses and prophets in Revelation and heavenly beings in Zechariah.

As most readers know: any time symbolism through metaphor or simile or hyperbole is used in literature or language, its fundamental purpose is to enhance or magnify the impact of the person, place, or thing … the subject of the sentence or passage. In other words, lampstand and olive trees help us to better grasp the character, function, and purpose of who they represent.

Some Bible commentators identify the two olive trees in Zechariah as Zerubbabel and Jeshua; however, there is a problem with this application. First, Jeshua isn’t even mentioned in the Zechariah Chapter 4 vision. Rather Jeshua is introduced in a completely different scene as found in Zechariah Chapter 3, with a different meaning and future application. One that involves none other than God’s, “servant, the Branch” who will, “remove the sins of this land (Israel) in a single day” (Zechariah 3: 8-9). The Branch is none other than Messiah (Jesus).

Next, Zechariah Chapter 4 references only Zerubbabel (not Jeshua), but it doesn’t say that Zerubbabel is an olive tree (one of the two olives trees). The Lord didn’t speak about Zerubbabel as a symbolic representation of the two heavenly beings; rather the Lord spoke to Zerubbabel. And the subject of this message specifically concerned the rebuilding of the second temple.

Lastly, neither Jeshua nor Zerubbabel were Old Testament prophets, as prophets are characterized and defined in the Bible.

Why is this mysterious term heavenly beings utilized? I say, mysterious, because nowhere else in the Bible do we find this term used, precisely as we find it in this passage from Zechariah.

What the two heavenly beings are not.

They are not angels. Again, nowhere in Scripture do we find angels actually described as or called heavenly beings. Certainly, they are special beings created by God and their primary residence is with God in heaven, but angels are angels; not some enigmatic “heavenly being” such as identified by the angel in this very unique circumstance recorded by Zechariah. And, angels are never referred to symbolically as lampstands or olive trees, which is the allegorical description found in both Zechariah 4 and Revelation 11. In Zechariah, we are then told that the olive trees/branches symbolically represent the two heavenly beings. In Revelation these two olive trees and lampstands (same descriptive analogy used in Zechariah) are, in fact, the two witnesses or prophets. Although they have various functions, such as ministering and protective spirits, angels are simply referred to as angels (God’s messengers) throughout Scripture.

Nor are these heavenly beings two of the four living beings or two of the twenty-four elders that John saw in his first vision after being summoned to heaven by Christ, who spoke to John and said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this” (Revelation 4:1). Instantly John saw a throne in heaven, and the one sitting on the throne, “…was as brilliant as gemstones—like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow. Twenty-four thrones surrounded him, and twenty-four elders sat on them” (Revelation 4:3-4). John continues with this spectacular vision: “…In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back” (Verse 6). After John presents more details as to the appearance of these four living beings, he tells us, “…Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come” (Verse 8).

There are twenty-four elders and four living beings, whereas there are two heavenly beings in Zechariah. There would be no reason whatsoever for two of the twenty-four elders or two of the four living beings to also be the two heavenly beings … the term used in Zechariah. Nor is there any designation of the living beings and elders representing lampstands or olive trees.

Incidentally, most Bible scholars (I concur) accurately explain the imagery of the lampstand as representing light, which is the truth of God’s majestic plan of salvation for mankind that produces light and life for everyone who places their trust in the crucified and resurrected Son of God. Moreover, the branches of the olive trees that produce oil represent (power and presence of) the Holy Spirit. Thus, these two heavenly beings (witnesses, prophets) will proclaim the truth of God and do so by the power of the Holy Spirit. The heavenly role/purpose of the four living beings and the twenty-four elders are varied as depicted in Revelation, but they are not prophets or heavenly beings who stand before the Lord of the earth, as such. Though they are obviously endowed with power and position, neither the four-living beings nor the twenty-four elders perform miracles as do the two witnesses/prophets who are referred to as heavenly beings in Zechariah.

Not only is the enigmatic description of these two men (by process of elimination and by default they must be men) unique but so is the fact that they stand before “the Lord of the earth.” Once again we see a title that is not used of God or Jesus much at all in Scripture. Often we read about the Lord of Hosts or as the NLT translates it, “The Lord of Heavens Armies,” but Zechariah says the two heavenly beings stand in the presence of the Lord of all the Earth. Why the distinction between the normal language that our Lord is the Lord of Heaven (which he certainly is) and the Lord of the Earth—which he also certainly is although he has given Satan temporary limited authority to rule over the earth, i.e. the world system of godless governments down through the ages.

More Comparative Evidence

Once again, many students of Scripture and Bible prophecy are convinced that the two witnesses of Revelation 11 are and will be Moses and Elijah. And, I heartily agree. By far the most common—and often the only—reason given is because of the supernatural similarity between the power given to and miracles performed by Moses in his time and Elijah in his time, and the two prophets of Revelation. Moreover, Old Testament prophets would sometimes prophesy in burlap clothing, which Revelation 11 tells us is worn by the two witnesses. A modern-day man would not wear burlap. And if he did, while preaching the truth of God, most would consider him as an imposter, trying to mimic Old Testament prophets. But if Moses and Elijah actually appeared (in burlap), well … a lot more people will listen and take heed!

Let’s read again about the colossal feats ascribed to these two witnesses: “These two prophets are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of all the earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire flashes from their mouths and consumes their enemies. This is how anyone who tries to harm them must die. They have the power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall for as long as they prophesy. And they have the power to turn the rivers and oceans into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish” (Revelation 11: 4-6).

Let’s look at the extraordinary correlations between this passage and the accomplishments of Moses and Elijah. And in so doing, to remember the purpose behind these marvelous demonstrations of authority: to get the attention of those being afflicted, ultimately for their own good. With the end result of listening to God, acknowledging his sovereignty, and doing what must be done. Such as turning—from destructive, ungodly behavior as described in Revelation during the Great Tribulation, i.e. sorcery, thefts, sexual immorality, and murders—to the true and living God and His Messiah, Christ Jesus. (See Revelation 9:20-21).But also, to demonstrate the awesome power of the true and living God and His Messiah toward and against those who arrogantly defy their Creator by vainly making themselves equal with God—by creating their own morality and serving their own gods, which most often are themselves.

Moses:

–  Nearly all who have read or heard about the ten miraculous plagues that God inflicted on the Egyptians through Moses, know about the first one: turning the Nile River into blood. During a 3 ½ year display of dynamic and dramatic power, not just one river will be polluted by blood, but several/many, “rivers and oceans” will be contaminated by the two Revelation prophets.

–  Nine more plagues followed in the Exodus story, each more devastating than the former, until all the firstborn male children, including Pharaoh’s child, died in a single night. Revelation 11 tells us that these two prophets (most likely Moses in this case) will, “…strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.” Thus, instead of a few weeks of successive plagues during the softening of Pharaoh’s ever-hardening heart, Moses (and Elijah) will dispense plagues for 3 ½ years!

Elijah:

– Please refer to I Kings Chapter 18 for the astounding confrontation between Elijah and 850 so-called prophets hired by Ahab and Jezebel to lead the Hebrews away from God and toward false, non-existent gods such as Baal. Many know the story. But to condense this amazing incident for purpose of this article, suffice to say that the prophets of Baal could no more persuade Baal to consume the prepared sacrifice with fire than could Ahab or Jezebel themselves. When it was Elijah’s turn, he simply prayed a short prayer to the Lord, and God completely consumed the sacrifice; thus validating Elijah’s bold claim that the God of Israel was the only true and living God.

– Let’s read the shocking results: “Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, ‘The Lord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God’” (I Kings 18: 38-39).

Another supernatural comparison between Moses/Elijah and the two prophets can be made: Pharaoh had the power, opportunity, and means to have Moses and Aaron put to death at any time during the sequence of plagues, but he didn’t. More like, he couldn’t! Why? Because God divinely protected Moses as his chosen prophet/witness to Pharaoh.

Likewise, with Elijah. At any point in time, Ahab could have ordered Elijah killed. In fact, both he and his wicked wife, Jezebel, had been vainly searching for Elijah to do just that—kill him. Instead, Ahab allowed Elijah not only to go through with this great test/demonstration as to who exactly was God and who was not; but Ahab also stood by while at least 400 prophets of Baal were slain by Elijah and the people who turned back to God.

Compare the sovereign protection of Moses and Elijah to the two witnesses. As indicated earlier, the two prophets of Revelation who are the same two heavenly beings of Zechariah, are indestructible until their God-given mission is accomplished.

Do you see what’s happening here? For all intents and purposes, these two mighty men of God will be untouchable by the False Prophet and the Antichrist, until their 3 ½ years of proclaiming God’s truth is finished. Then, and only then, will God allow the beast of Revelation (Nero) to kill them. But even that won’t be anything close to permanent, as confirmed by a spectacular event 3 ½ days later.

(That gives a whole new meaning to a Witness protection program! Sorry, I couldn’t resist the analogy).

“But after three and a half days, God breathed life into them, and they stood up! Terror struck all who were staring at them. Then a loud voice from heaven called to the two prophets, ‘Come up here!’ And they rose to heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched. At the same time there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed a tenth of the city (Jerusalem). Seven thousand people died in that earthquake and everyone else was terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven” (Revelation 11: 11-13).

So, too with Moses. He survived Pharaoh’s wrath and certain destruction (along with the Israelites who faithfully followed him and God) at the Red Sea … by God splitting the sea into dry land. He survived forty dangerous years in the harsh Judean wilderness, and forty days and nights without food on Mt. Sinai (twice, or was it three times?). He died directly at the hands of his loving God at the ripe old age of 120; yet the circumstances surrounding his death and burial are still a mystery to this day. (More on that in next week’s article).

So, too with Elijah. He not only was spared providentially from Jezebel’s decree of death for him, he was told by the Lord that 7,000 others in Israel also followed the Lord, who had, “…never bowed down to Baal or kissed him!” (I Kings 19:18); to assure Elijah that he was not alone … nor the last true prophet in Israel at the time. Strange or ironic that 7,000 will die in the earthquake immediately after the two prophets are raised from the dead, 3 ½ days after they are murdered by Antichrist. Undoubtedly many, if not all, of these 7,000 who die had already taken the mark of the beast and/or had bowed to the statue of the beast. And it takes the prophets 3 ½ years to, “complete their testimony” (Rev. 11:7), approximately the same amount of time Elijah stopped the rain in Israel.

We have forty days that Elijah also fasted; then later God spoke to him on the very spot where Moses fasted and received the Ten Commandments, Mt. Sinai. Who else fasted for forty days and nights in the Judean wilderness several hundreds of years later? Too easy of a question: Messiah Yeshua. Another easy question: Who was it that met and spoke with Jesus on another mountaintop in Israel? Answer: None other than Moses and Elijah!

Things to Ponder

There’s more! But you’ll need to wait until next week’s article to discover extra amazing things about Elijah and Moses. Scriptural facts that will (1) further validate them as the two witnesses of Revelation. (2) Provide near irrefutable evidence that they alone are qualified to be the heavenly beings who witness and prophesy for the Lord during the Great Tribulation. In doing so, we’ll examine in more depth why they are referred to as heavenly beings and why they stand before the Lord of the earth.

Just a sampling: Elijah and Moses appeared with Christ in bodily form! They were not spirits. Keep that in mind as we continue this captivating back to the future journey. (Next week).

BLOOD MOONS

How many moons are there? Well, let’s count some of them. There are new moons, crescent moons, half-moons, and full-moons. There are white moons, blue moons, cold moons, and moons over Miami. There are hunter’s moons, harvest moons, planting moons, and thunder moons. And, the moon that has recently captured global attention (over 3,000,000 hits on Google alone in the past few days) is the ever famous Blood Moon.

Blood Moon? Such a strange, almost morbid way to characterize the earth’s moon, but even scientists’ use this graphic term to explain what happens during a total eclipse of the moon. They do their best to teach us about the sun, earth, and moon lining up; about refracted rays of the sun; resulting shadows that fall on the moon, darkening it; all part of a lunar eclipse that gives the moon a sort of copper, orange, rust-red coloration, all netted in the phrase blood moon. Ugh … a bloody moon? The thought somehow conjures up things that I really don’t want to conjure. In fact, I don’t ever want to conjure anything at all. Leave conjuring to the conjurers, I say.

Did contemporary astronomers of the 20th or 21st century coin this mysterious, gloom and doom, almost unscientific expression of blood moon. Not even close. The concept has been around for thousands of years, and the phrase is used dramatically in the context of the end times “Day of the Lord.” Let’s read about it in the Old Testament book of Joel written around 800 BC:

“Sound the alarm in Jerusalem! Raise the battle cry on my holy mountain! Let everyone tremble in fear because the day of the Lord is upon us” (Joel 2:1). Then later in the same chapter, “And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth—blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood-red before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives” (Joel 2: 30-31, italics for emphasis).

Last week’s Eye of Prophecy article was entitled, Passover, an Enduring Legacy. And, of course, it dealt with the very first Passover deliverance of the Jews from hundreds of years of bondage in Egypt. But it also explained the relevance to today’s celebration of Passover and Resurrection Day, i.e. redemption from the wrath of God and from personal (and national) sin and the penalty of that sin. Moreover, God instructed the Jews to annually celebrate that first Exodus Passover for all time. Later, when the Mosaic Law was given by God to his people, six more annual festivals were ordained, three of which required a personal journey to Jerusalem by the Jews—Passover, Feast of Tabernacles, and Feast of Weeks or Pentecost. Many Jews today believe that Messiah will make his appearance (to the observant Jew it will be Messiah’s first arrival) during Passover week. That “the day of the Lord” may bring more (temporary) heartache, but ultimately will be their Day of Redemption!

Here, I need to interject my own personal belief (based on a pretty intensive study of Scriptures and history for several decades), that each of the Old Testament festivals is a forerunner prototype, a shadow if you will of the Messiah … who he is, what he did upon his first appearance, and what he will do when he returns. We’ve already talked about the significance of Passover and how it interactively represents and relates to, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” The Feast of Tabernacles reminds the Jews of God’s protection and provision during their 40 years in the wilderness, so accomplished by God’s very presence on Mt. Sinai, in the Cloud Pillar and, of course, in the Tabernacle itself.

For Jewish and Gentile Christians in this current Age of Grace, Tabernacles also reminds us that for some 33 years, God was actually present on this earth (Immanuel, god with us) in the form of his very Son, Yeshua ha Mashiach … Jesus the Christ. Then Scripture gives us the incredible promise that Messiah will return to live with his people (the redeemed) FOREVER. Did you know that the Feast of Tabernacles is the only festival that will be a perpetual requirement for observance/celebration during the Millennial Reign of Christ on the earth, and for all eternity after that? (See Zechariah 14). Why? To never forget and to forever acknowledge that El Shaddai (Almighty God) is our very life and existence. He gives life at the moment of conception and he gives life a second time (everlasting) when we are born-again from above. We must have that life to overcome the consequence of physical death (soul/spirit separation from the body) and spiritual death (eternal separation from God). To remember the Feast of Tabernacles (also called Feast of Booths) is to say to the Lord our God, “We trust you for food, clothing, shelter, family, life, truth … for everything!”

Jewish Festivals and Blood Moons

As first postulated by Pastor/Author Mark Blitz in his publication on Blood Moons, then subsequently presented by Pastor John Hagee, founder of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, in his book, Four Blood Moons, they believe that there is an undeniable connection between full eclipses of the moon (blood moons) and major Jewish festivals, especially Passover and Tabernacles. As summarized by reporter, Tom Olago in Prophecy News Watch, “While lunar eclipses themselves are not rare—four consecutive blood moons or a ‘tetrad’ are more uncommon—sometimes going several hundred years without one. However a blood moon on Biblical Feast days is extremely rare. It has only happened eight times since 1 A.D.”

Pastor Blitz further explains that the last two cycles of blood moons that took place on Jewish festival days occurred a short time after two monumental events in Jewish history: the national birth of Israel in 1948 and the recapture of Jerusalem in 1967. Another blood moon cycle occurred in 1492, around the time that the Queen and King of Spain expelled all Jews from that country. In Western civilization we also remember 1492 for what? Of course you know: Columbus sailing to and discovering America!

Thus, Pastors Blitz and Hagee speculate that the current tetrad could very well be in proximity to another significant event involving Israel. They could be right. Putting it another way: I would be the last to say that they’re wrong, if for no other reason than the historical precedents just cited. However, I would also caution against an automatic or default cause and effect type of association between this blood moon tetrad and the Rapture which sets in motion The Day of the Lord.

The first of these four blood moons took place this past week—April 15th on Passover. It’s my understanding that tens of thousands stayed up (or got up) in the early morning hours after midnight to watch the two-hour gradual eclipse of the moon. There was a time when I might have joined them; but at this stage of my life, it was way past my bed time! Besides, that’s what newspaper and internet photographs are for.

041027-N-9500T-001

The next blood moon will occur this year on October 8, the festival day of Sukkot, or Feast of Tabernacles. The third one next year—again on Passover, April 4, 2015—and the final blood moon eclipse on September 28, 2015 … again on Sukkot.

Fortunately, neither Pastor Blitz nor Pastor Hagee dogmatically claim that one of these events will be the day when Christ raptures the Church. And, that’s good, because no one knows the day or hour of our Lord’s return. To select any one of the four days would be just another attempt to “guess” even though the guess may be on a significant date, such as those that comprise the tetrad. As said, one of those days has already come and gone (April 15th), without an event of huge consequence happening to/in Israel or, for that matter, anywhere in the world.

Connections between Rapture, Festivals, Moons, End Times?

Personally, I think it would be great if the Rapture would occur on one of these very important festival dates. Especially September 28th … my birthday. Kidding, but not entirely! But all of us who passionately long for the return of our glorious Savior Jesus Christ know full well that ANY day (the sooner the better) would be a wonderful day! Alongside of the triumphant return of Christ to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem to set things right throughout the entire earth, the Rapture of believers in Christ will be the most spectacular event of all time. Not necessarily the most important (that belongs to the day that our Lord arose from the dead), but arguably the most stunning.

So, based on the previous tetrads in proximity to the rebirth of Israel and the recapture of Jerusalem, can/should we expect a milestone event to occur, particularly affecting the nation of Israel? To answer that question, let’s return to Joel 2:31, “…and the moon will turn blood-red….” Or, is there a direct connection between the coming lunar eclipse tetrad (one leg of the tetrad already past) and the Rapture of the Church, or the Day of the Lord?

First, this prophecy will be fulfilled, “before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.” The obvious implication here is that it will take place during the aspect of the Day of the Lord that involves God’s wrath poured out on the earth … in other words during the Great Tribulation. The Day of the Lord includes both punishment (Tribulation) and blessings, which will begin with the Millennial Reign of Christ on the earth. The tetrad events of 1492, 1948, and 1967 are too far in the past to connect them to the day of the Lord which has not yet arrived. Plus, the fact that there have been eight of them since 1 A.D. leads us to the conclusion that, although there very well could be a connection between a full lunar eclipse and something dramatic taking place in Israel, we should not dogmatically conclude that one of the remaining three blood moons will immediately precede or coincide with the beginning of the tribulation. Not only that, but notice what else will take place, and in what order. “The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood-red…”

Jesus amplified and expounded on this passage during his Mount of Olives discourse to his disciples regarding the end times. He said, “Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken” (Matthew 24:29). The strong implication in these two passages concerning the sequence of events is that the darkening of the sun (also refer to the fifth bowl judgment found in Revelation 16:10) and the moon turning to blood will take place well into the seven-year Tribulation period, perhaps half-way through. But this “turning of the moon into blood-red” will be much more than just an eclipse of the moon. For sure the eclipse of the moon (especially on Biblical Jewish festival days) is a marvelous sight to behold. Equally remarkable is that some of these “tetrads” have been in very close proximity to monumental milestones of Jewish history.

One or more of the remaining three blood moons might occur at the same time or close to the same time as some significant event (say, for example, an Israeli preemptive attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities). But, I don’t believe the blood-red moon of Joel will be a “normal” lunar eclipse. It will be a very special wonder in the sky, which will probably take place totally separate from a regular scheduled eclipse that all scientists can predict with a great deal of certainty and accuracy. I’m convinced that the blood moon during the Day of the Lord will “eclipse” (pun intended) any and all blood moons that have already occurred or will occur again during a scheduled eclipse of the moon. It will truly be a supernatural event in which the moon will look more blood-like in appearance that any eclipse ever witnessed by man.

Plus, in conjunction with the moon turning to blood, the sun will become completely dark … no light at all for a period of time. And, so will “the moon give no light…” I believe this will take place soon after the moon turns to blood. There will also be other, “wonders in the heavens and on the earth—blood and fire and columns of smoke” (Joel 2:30). And, “…the powers in the heavens will be shaken” (Matthew 24:29).

Listed to what Jesus said would come next, “And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens … And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30).

The Joel prophecy of what is clearly a one-time moon turning to blood-red and giving no light event, preceded by the sun (completely) darkened doesn’t fit with 2000 years of periodic lunar eclipses in which the moon is described as a “blood moon.” In other words, Joel’s prophecy isn’t being fulfilled gradually over hundreds of years. However, these blood moon lunar eclipses have been a harbinger and a forerunner of what will take place during that great and terrible day of the Lord. And, in God’s sovereignty and emphasis on holy days that he established for the nation of Israel, blood moon tetrads have been linked with milestones in Israel’s history, and very well may do so again. And, as much as I (and many of us) would like to see the Rapture take place on one of these glorious festivals (holidays, meaning Holy Days), I’m equally convinced it will not.

When We Least Expect

Instead, the Rapture will most likely take place on some “ordinary” day far removed from such days as Passover, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Christmas, Resurrection Sunday, Purim, or any other vitally important day that we might revere and celebrate. Why on earth would I say something so anticlimactic, so over-the-top, so uninspired, so uneventful, so … well, so, negative!?

What is the basis for such a conclusion? This premise is based on what Jesus, himself, said. Most of us know the passage; in fact, we’ve just referred to it, i.e. Matthew Chapter 24 (and 25). Many of you will recognize the verse. Here it is: “You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected” (Matthew 24: 44, italics for emphasis).

Did you catch that? Of course, you did. To further emphasize and reinforce his statement that no one knows the hour or the day of his return, Jesus gave us another strong clue. He will return (on a day) when we least expect him to arrive. There are 365 days in the year (360 if you use the Hebrew calendar). If we rely heavily on what Jesus is telling us, then combine it with all the other end times passages, I think we can safely assume (predict) that he will not take us home in the Rapture on any holiday of great importance to us or to the Jews. Besides, the only prophecy remaining for the church, itself (the body of Christ consisting of both Jews and Gentiles) is the Rapture. This prophecy has no bearing whatsoever on all the predictions pertaining to Israel and the Jews, such as the physical and spiritual restoration of Israel as a people and a nation.

Thus, I believe it is a mistake, at least a miscalculated presumption to claim or even to speculate beyond mere possibility that blood moon tetrads (lunar eclipses) have a direct correlation with the Rapture of the Church. If that were the case, then our Lord has teased us some 7 ¼ times during the past 2000 years. Some could even argue that we have been misled to think that blood moon tetrads will signal the return of Christ. But misled only if they make a connection that should be reserved to significant events pertaining to Israel. Do you see the difference?

Blood moons? Do they apply to Israel? Absolutely, they do, but we never know which ones or when, until something happens such as the Six-Day War of 1967. Do blood moons apply to the Church or the Rapture? Highly unlikely; however, the Great Tribulation that follows the Rapture will see an abundance of signs/wonders in the heavens and unimaginable plagues on the earth never experienced before and never to be experienced again. The reason that the darkened sun, and the blood-red moon which gives no light of Joel Chapter 2 will be so utterly spectacular, is because it will defy all scientific explanations including a lunar eclipse. And, these signs will be but two of many wonders in the heavens and earth, “before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.”

Things to Ponder

As a matter of emphasis, I would repeat my (and I think all who passionately hope for the soon-to-be glorious appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ) earlier preference that the Lord’s return might be on a significant day of the year. Wouldn’t it be marvelous if the Last Trumpet would sound, our mortal bodies transfigured, and we ascend to heaven (Rapture) while we’re opening presents on Christmas Eve or Day? Or while we’re listening to Handel’s Messiah on Resurrection Sunday? Or while Jews and some Gentiles are celebrating Passover?

The evidence weighs heavily against the Lord’s appearance on such days. But as suggested: Any day of the year would be the most wonderful day imaginable, if it were the day of our Lord’s return to take us home! Meanwhile, let’s follow Paul’s majestic appeal to Titus and other believers: “For the grace of God had been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed” (Titus 2: 11-13).

The Omega Generation

(Are We) THE OMEGA GENERATION?

“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22: 12-13). These are the very words of Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Man, Son of David, Messiah. And they are found in the last chapter of the last book of the Bible.

I am from the Baby Boomer generation. What generation do you belong to? Silent Generation? Generation X? Generation Y (Millennial)? Generation Z (Coming of Age)?Lost generation? We love to name our generations. But how often do we think about the final generation? Or, will there even be a final generation? If so, will it have a name? I think so … let’s call it the Omega Generation!

Old Testament prophetic books such as Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Zechariah and New Testament books such as I & II Thessalonians and Revelation give us a wealth of information about the end times or the last days of this age. Of equal or even greater consequence are the words of Jesus, himself, given to his disciples on the Mount of Olives just a few days before his crucifixion and resurrection. This impressive disclosure of the signs of the last days can be found in Matthew 24 & 25, and the companion text in Luke 21.

Yet, from what I’ve seen and heard, many Christians don’t fully understand these passages. One reason is that the events announced by Jesus are not necessarily in chronological order. Or they refer to a period of time that precede and precipitates the final days … meaning events that take place during the birth pains; such as wars, rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes. Or, as in the case of Luke 21: 20-24 and Matthew 24:2, Jesus is predicting (referring to) the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple that subsequently occurred in 70 AD.

“And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived” (Luke 21:20). We know that this refers to the Roman conquest of Israel by the Roman Generals Vespasian and Titus, as that is exactly what happened in 66-70 AD. This is further confirmed in verse 24: “They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world…” That, too, took place in 70 AD and continued for hundreds of years through the horrific Holocaust during WWII.

Then we read the words of Jesus in the last part of Luke 21:24: “…And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.”

The God-ordained and time-specified prophecy of seven times over as found in Leviticus 26, has been the subject of our previous three articles. As explained and documented in these articles, God’s final (phase four) discipline of Israel resulted in eviction of the people from the land of Israel and subsequent exile to nations all over the world. Because God himself designed the sequential phases of punishment, he alone would determine exactly when the discipline would begin and end. The vast majority of Bible scholars agree that the Times of the Gentiles began with Babylon’s final conquest of Israel in 586 BC. We then found that the 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 paradigm measured in historical years (including 49 Jubilee years) did, in fact, come to an end in 1967.

Furthermore, the year 1967 was/is a monumentally significant year in Jewish modern-day history as that’s when the Six-Day War occurred. One outcome of this stunning victory was the final capture of all of Jerusalem by the Israelis, including Temple Mount. This was God’s predetermined plan to end Gentile domination of the Jews, of Israel, and of Jerusalem.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Israel will not be attacked again; or, for a specified period of time (42 months), be under partial control by Gentile nations … specifically led by Antichrist. “Then I was given a measuring stick, and I was told, ‘Go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count the number of worshipers. But do not measure the outer courtyard, for it has been turned over to the nations. They will trample the holy city for 42 months’” (Revelation 11: 1-2).

This allotted time matches precisely with the time given to the beast of Revelation (Antichrist). “Then the beast was allowed to speak great blasphemies against God. And he was given authority to do whatever he wanted for forty-two months. And he spoke terrible words of blasphemy against God, slandering his name and his temple—that is, those who live in heaven. And the beast was allowed to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation” (Revelation 13: 5-7).

But notice one thing that is transparently missing from this temporary 42-month period of God-permitted domination by Antichrist: The Jews are NOT exiled or taken captive to other nations on earth, as they were before the Times of the Gentiles ended in 1967.

Both in terms of method and time, the seven times over prophecy was very precise in its fulfillment; with the 4th and final phase incorporating God’s use of Gentile nations to discipline God’s chosen people. This was accomplished through exile of Jews to nations all over the earth. Until, that is, the rebirth of Israel in 1948, then the seizure of other sectors of Israel during the Six-Day War in June, 1967; not the least of which was all of Jerusalem, the Holy City of the Holy Land.

Scripture is very clear—through many of the Old Testament prophets: Once the Jews return to Israel, they will never again be under constant Gentile domination. As we have seen, that continuous rule ended in June, 1967. Thus, the Tribulation period of 42 months is but a temporary interlude to the cessation of Gentile rule over the Jews. In the book of Ezekiel, we find one of many promises throughout the Old Testament that, once God ends his punishment of the Jews and restores his people to the land of Israel, never again will they be held captive by Gentile enemies.

“And from that time on the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. The nations will then know why Israel was sent away to exile—it was punishment for sin, for they were unfaithful to their God. Therefore, I turned away from them and let their enemies destroy them. I turned my face away and punished them because of their defilement and their sins” (Ezekiel 39:21-24).

The passage continues with good news: “So now, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘I will end the captivity of my people; I will have mercy on all Israel, for I jealously guard my holy reputation! They will accept responsibility for their past shame and unfaithfulness after they come home to live in peace in their own land, with no one to bother them. When I bring them home from the lands of their enemies, I will display my holiness among them for all the nations to see. Then my people will know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them away to exile and brought them home again. I will leave none of my people behind. And I will never again turn my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit upon the people of Israel. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!’” (Ezekiel 39: 25-29, italics for emphasis).

Now it’s time to examine more words of Jesus’s prophecy as to a potential or projected time-frame starting with the return of the Jews to Israel and their final spiritual restoration … “pour out my Spirit upon the people of Israel.”

Generational Measurements of the Last Days

Another well-known, but nevertheless spectacular prophecy given by Jesus during the Mount of Olives discourse is as follows: “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place” (Matthew 24:32-34).

Scripture gives us two primary designations or parameters of a generation, both of which are measured in real time.

2. Seventy Years: “Seventy years are given to us!

Application of Biblical Generations to the Last Generation

Some Christians are confused about or don’t entirely understand the role of the Church and Israel during the last days beginning with the Rapture. Please fathom one critical premise/truth: Although the Mount of Olives discourse indirectly applies to the Church (composed of all Jews and Gentiles who have been redeemed by Messiah Jesus), the whole purpose of Christ’s majestic return is to set up the Kingdom of Heaven (Kingdom of God) on the earth IN the Holy Land and THROUGH / FOR his chosen people, the Jews. And what triggers the need for Christ to return to Israel is none other than the ultimate and final rescue of the Jews (Israel) from conquest and destruction at the hands of Antichrist.

Concerning the Church, the sole purpose of the Rapture is to snatch away believers from the earth so that we do not have to experience the final wrath of God poured out on an ungodly generation of unbelievers. Otherwise, ALL of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Last Days or End Times focus on Israel, not the Church; in fact, the Church (consisted of all Jews/Gentiles who place their trust in Christ’s sacrificial death) doesn’t even come into existence for over 400 years after the last book of the Old Testament was written. Moreover, from the 4th Chapter through the 18th Chapter of the book of Revelation, the Church is not even mentioned, as such.

So, let’s look again at the three monumentally crucial events of the last 100 years, relating to the return of the Jews to Israel.

Combining All Three Events

Now comes the really exciting feature of all these conversion tables and what you might consider to be some boring mathematics. First, none of these three possibilities give us an exact day/hour of Christ’s return that begins with the first phase which is the Rapture and ends with his physical return at the end of the Tribulation. And that’s good. Why? Because Jesus, himself, said that no one can possibly know the day or hour of his return. I emphasize that almost to a fault in my article, When the Rapture. Therefore, I wouldn’t even pretend to know the exact date of Christ’ return, nor would I ever venture a guess.

With these questions in mind, what other specific events have occurred relating to Israel during the 20th or 21st century that would surpass or supplant the 1917, 1947 (48), and 1967 highlights that we’ve selected as commencement dates for both the 100 and 70-year generations, as well as the equally important Jubilee? In answer to this question, I’ll give you a hint: There are NO other events that even come close to these historical mileposts. In fact, take a look at what constitutes the Jubilee year in Leviticus Chapter 25. Among other things, it is a time to free servants, debts, and captives, which is exactly what happened when the IDF captured Jerusalem and freed all Jews to return to and live in all of Jerusalem—at least in principle.

Summary

Here’s what we find when we combine all three projected dates of generational or Jubilee time-lapse… meaning 100 years, 70 years, and 50 years (Roman calendar). From our three (four, if we also use Israel’s statehood of May, 1948) examples, we will select the earliest possible month/year all the way to the latest month/year.

It’s conceivable that we will hear the blast of the last Rapture trumpet: BETWEEN FEBRUARY, 2018 and MAY, 2019!!

Of course, Christ may Rapture the Church any day between now and the above listed dates, or even after those dates. For the following reasons: God will determine the next Jubilee in Israel’s history. Concerning a generation (whether 70 or 100 years): unless the prophecy specifies actual periods of time such as found in Daniel 9, there is normally some flexibility built-in to God’s use of numbers in Scripture. For example, there are, relatively speaking, a handful of people on the earth who live to be 105 or 110, or whatever. Also, the average life expectancy in many developed countries is in the vicinity of 76, 77, or 78 years.

But, if the Lord decides to combine all three time-frames, then I would be very surprised if we Christians are still on this earth after the year 2020. Although that is a speculative statement, I believe that it is a sanctified speculation! Meaning that it is based on some solid evidence from Scripture, particularly the passages quoted in this article and prior articles.

Things to Ponder
Once again, listen to the words of Jesus. He says: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13).

Are we the Omega generation?

THE RAPTURE (What, Why, Who, When & How)
This is the fifth and final article in our series on The Rapture.

HOW WILL THE RAPTURE TAKE PLACE?

For those who are quite familiar with the Biblical passages on the Rapture, or even those who know very little, you may be thinking, “What do you mean how will the Rapture take place? Doesn’t it take place “in the twinkling of an eye?” Isn’t that how the Bible portrays it, and isn’t that what we’ve always been taught? The answer is, “Yes.” And the answer is, “No.” Please, you say … not one of those yes and no answers! First, I completely agree with the yes part of the answer: It will be in the blink of an eye or even faster. But, in support of the no part of the answer, we need to examine the two main passages on the Rapture with microscopic magnification and intensity. And let’s see if we can pinpoint exactly what the twinkling of the eye refers to and what it doesn’t refer to.

While we’re at it, let’s scrutinize the prevalent view held by many Christians, including pastors, teachers and Bible scholars; who propose that the Rapture is only seen and heard by believers. That unbelievers left behind won’t see or hear anything except the shocking after effect of, “I can’t believe it … where did they go?” Several Christian movies and a couple of secular movies also have depicted this sudden disappearance of believers, who, one second were there, the next second gone. This view is one I held until a few years ago, and flows somewhat naturally and logically from the concept that the Rapture involves a sudden change, therefore, a “vanishing” of believers from the earth. So, here we go:

I Corinthians 15: 51-52. (Which is the 2nd revelation of the Rapture, chronologically … with the 1st revelation presented in I Thessalonians Chapter 4). We read the amazing description as follows: “But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.”

This is the second key passage where the Apostle Paul reveals another aspect of the astonishing mystery (of the Rapture), and this text explains how this spectacular event will transpire: “in the blink of an eye.” For the past several decades, every commentary, sermon, book, or article that deals with this passage–at least everything I’ve heard and read–consolidates, by default, the dynamics of this passage on the Rapture with the other main passage found in I Thessalonians Chapter 4. With a resulting conclusion that the entire scope or sequential events of the Rapture will transpire at warp speed … blink of an eye. For sure, the two passages are intricately related; but there is also a specific variance found in I Corinthians 15, that is profoundly distinct from the companion passage in I Thessalonians Chapter 4.

Second Bible Passage, I Thessalonians 4 (Which is the 1st chronological revelation of the Rapture): Let’s examine this first reference to the Rapture so we can see what it is that many students of the Bible have condensed into a microsecond period of time. Here it is: “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up (harpazo) in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever” (I Thessalonians 4: 15-17).

To Exactly What Does the Blink (Twinkling) of an Eye Refer? (Back to I Corinthians 15)
Here is where we students of the Bible (I’m including myself) overlooked or took for granted one little (impersonal) pronoun. Because we skimmed over this two-letter word, we missed or dismissed the important textual relationship of this pronoun to the antecedent that immediately precedes it And shame on me in particular, as my major in college was English/Literature! I’m sure you just thought or said something to the effect, “What in the world is he talking about?” Very reasonable question; I’ll answer it, by first defining “antecedent.” Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines antecedent as: “One that goes before … a substantive word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun …a word or group of words replaced and referred to by a substitute…”

The substitute is almost always a pronoun found immediately after the “substantive word or phrase”, which is the case in I Corinthians 15: 51-52. So let’s break it down.

First, the phrase in this passage: “…but we will all be transformed!”

Second, the pronoun, “It“, which begins the very next verse, “It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye….” Can you make the connection? What specifically is “it” referencing or taking the place of in the text? You got it: It is referring to and the same thing as what Paul just said would occur which is, “…but we will all be transformed.”

Next, the Apostle Paul elaborates on “it” (meaning the actual transformation itself, which as you already know is the transfiguration of our earthly body to that of our brand new heavenly, resurrected body) by explaining how it (the transfiguration) will take place. What does he say? He says, “It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye” When will it happen? “…when the last trumpet is blown.” For added emphasis and understanding, what will happen in the blink of an eye? You’re right: “It.” And again, what does it refer to? Right again: It refers exclusively to the just mentioned clause, “we will all be transformed!”

In the New American Standard translation, we read, “Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet….” (I Corinthians 15: 51-52). Notice, that the pronoun (it) is not found in this translation. Why? Because the connection between the action of “changed” (transformed) and the how of the change (twinkling of an eye) is inseparable, irrefutable, and exclusive. Both passages contain essentially the same composition; with the New Living Translation and other translations (such as the Jewish Bible) accurately and emphatically reinforcing the translation from Greek to English, by use of a pronoun that substitutes for the mystery of the transformation itself.

Please bear with me … I hope you see this as much more than just a boring exercise in grammar and syntax. It is exceptionally significant that we understand what is going on in this passage. Saying it another way: The only thing that will happen in a moment or blink of an eye (at the instant the last trumpet is blown) is the actual physical transfiguration of our earthly bodies. The “it” does not apply to anything else in this passage; nor can “the transformation” specifically apply to the events so majestically portrayed in I Thessalonians Chapter 4. In fact, I Thessalonians 4 doesn’t say anything about the blink of an eye transformation at all. But we’ve inadvertently extended or expanded the instantaneous change found in I Corinthians 15 to include the entire sequence of events described in I Thessalonians 4.

As alluded to, somewhere along the prophetic highway, we made a wrong turn; because we missed a little warning sign that effectively said, “Detour Ahead. Watch for Pronouns.” Meaning that we stayed on the four-lane highway with a bit of tunnel vision, thinking that everything said about or encompassing the Rapture in both of these Biblical passages would take place in the twinkling of an eye. We missed the little detour that, as we’ve just seen, would have narrowed the highway (for a short distance) down to one lane–with the blink of an eye referring only to the physical transformation of our earthly bodies. All the other component parts of the Rapture will also take place in actual time/space sequence, but this real-time is not the blink of an eye. What kind of time-frame or sequence, then, am I talking about?

The Real-Time Sequence of the Entire Rapture (Before and after the Last Trumpet is Blown):
The Apostle Paul conveys the active sequence of the Rapture in I Thessalonians Chapter 4.

First: “The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel…” (I Thessalonians 4: 16a). Many scholars believe this shout could very well be the same words used by Jesus to call John to heaven where John would be given the astounding revelations of the end times. In Revelation 4:1b, Jesus commanded John, “Come up here…” Equally significant is how Jesus commanded John. In the first part of the verse we read, “Then as I looked, I saw a door standing open in heaven, and the same voice I had heard before spoke to me like a trumpet blast” (Rev. 4:1a, italics for emphasis). The similarity between this shout from Jesus (like a trumpet blast) is too strong of a parallel to consider it a mere coincidence with I Thessalonians 4.

Second: In addition to a commanding shout and the voice of the archangel, our Lord will also descend, “with the trumpet call of God.”

Third: What happens next? The dead in Christ rise, then those believers alive are caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. (See I Thessalonians 4:7)

With regard to the real-time lapse of what is happening, we need to interject a healthy dose of common sense to the reality of what is taking place. We all know that “common sense” is and can be one of the best ways to look at real life experiences in order to understand what they are and what they mean. A good many people swear by common sense as a superior teacher in life, even more so than formal education. What does common sense tell us in the context of these three steps of how the Rapture will occur?

It’s fairly simple: Think about it for a couple of minutes (or longer). Does it make any sense that the entire sequence of events (first, second, and third steps listed above) could happen in “the blink of an eye?” Or a companion question: Why would it happen in a microsecond? Or, how could we as believers possibly “process” and experience in real-time (not virtual time or reality) the entire progression –the Lord descending, the trumpet call of God, the dead rising first, then those alive being caught up in the air—in a tiny fraction of a second?

There is no evidence, whatsoever, in these two passages that the Lord will set aside time, or otherwise stop the clock. In fact, wouldn’t the Lord want us to absorb (take it all in) the majesty and wonder of the whole thing in real-time? If the sequence of I Thessalonians is over in the twinkling of an eye, then why would the Lord even bother to explain the amazing order or arrangement as described in Chapter 4?

Of course, the Lord could do all this in a split second, if he wanted to. But why would he inexplicably reduce such an astonishing and majestic event to a microsecond and, thereby, deprive us of the awesome splendor of his glory and the ensuing sensory, spiritual, mental, and emotional real-life, real-time experience? (If the Lord does temporarily change the hands of time, I actually hope that it might be in slow-motion!) Wouldn’t you agree: It makes much more sense that these events–from the moment Christ descends from heaven to the instant our bodies are transfigured and everything in between–would transpire in actual time, i.e. at least a few minutes? Yet, the prevailing consensus in the Church is that all these things are over in an instant. But, if you prefer more evidence or rationale than just common sense, we have that, too!

Biblical Precedents & Jewish Tradition:

Here, we need to focus on the trumpet call, which is (not just coincidentally) mentioned in both of these Rapture passages. I Thessalonians tells us that the third and last part of Messiah’s descent from heaven comprises, “the trumpet call of God.” Now we need to return to I Corinthians 15, specifically verse 52: “It will happen in a moment, in the blink of any eye, when the last trumpet is blown … For when the trumpet sounds….” Now the Apostle Paul is telling us when “it” will happen. It—referring to the instant transformation of our earthly body–will happen, “when the last trumpet is blown.”

I placed “last trumpet” in bold letters and italics to make a reflective emphasis on and a vital examination of trumpet call(s). Why is the trumpet call in I Corinthians 15 classified as the “last” trumpet call? Why the modifier, “last?” Why not just the trumpet call as we find in I Thessalonians Chapter 4. What might “last” suggest to you? You’ve probably already thought about it. The adjective qualifier last wouldn’t be used unless it was just that, the last trumpet call. With a clear inference that there must be other trumpet calls preceding and leading to the final one. Once again, there would be no purpose whatsoever for Scripture to tell us that the transfiguration of our bodies would take place at the last (final) call, if there was only one trumpet blast. Thus, in I Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul is giving us more details on the trumpet blast first mentioned in I Thessalonians 4.

Why, then, are there two or more, or a series of trumpet calls? The answer is found primarily in the Old Testament, but also in modern-day Israel. *Note: A thorough treatise on the method and significance of the use of the trumpet and/or shofar in Jewish history would take far too much space than a blog article allows. Thus, I must condense this into a few sentences. If you like, do some research on the ancient and modern use of the Shofar in Israel.

Also, to quickly emphasize that the last trumpet call referenced in I Corinthians 15 can’t possibly be the final trumpet call of all time; thus giving possible meaning that it is the last and, therefore, only trumpet call to herald the Rapture. Reason: There are many more trumpet calls during the Great Tribulation (after the Rapture occurs) as found throughout the Book of Revelation.

Purpose of Trumpets and the Shofar:

The shofar (normally made from the horns of a ram), but also trumpets crafted from beaten silver were an integral part of Israel’s customs and heritage. In fact, trumpet blasts were a requirement by God during the Feast of Trumpets, one of the seven festivals given by God to the Jewish people, still celebrated to this day (See Leviticus 23: 23-25). Several blasts of the shofar announced other festivals, and the shofar also was used to warn the Jews of an impending attack by their enemies. And, let’s not forget the mighty shofar blasts that accompanied God’s Ten Commandments proclaimed at Mt. Sinai!

The blowing of trumpets in the book of Revelation will announce spectacular happenings, including seven of God’s judgments. Trumpets have also been used throughout Gentile history, especially during battle. Can you imagine the Calvary coming to the rescue in a Western movie without first blowing a trumpet! And they will play a huge role in the last days of this age. If you ever have the privilege of traveling to Israel, you will hear the sound of shofars throughout the year, especially during Rosh Hashanah (New Year Feast of Trumpets). Israel and the shofar are inseparable, as are trumpets and the Rapture, followed by the tribulation trumpets.

Here’s where we’re going with this: Normally, the blowing of the shofar wasn’t a simple quick, one-time burst of sound. Rather, it entailed a series of blasts lasting several minutes, with each part of the series different from the others, and sometimes each component part repeated again. That is still true today in Israel or wherever the shofar or a trumpet is sounded for Biblical reasons. Are you getting the connection to the last trumpet of the Rapture? “Last” overwhelmingly implies that there are other blasts that precede the final trumpet call. And, references to the shofar/trumpet in Scripture are very consistent, in terms of the how and why they are used. There’s every reason to believe that the trumpet call(s) of the Rapture will be the same: that is, a series of blasts. Especially when Paul stipulates that the instant change of our bodies from corruptible to incorruptible is directly connected to the “last” trumpet.

At the top of this blog article, you’ll find a link to videos that accurately depict the (four-part) blowing of the Shofar. The second (lower) video in particular could very well simulate the Rapture sounds; albeit, the Trumpet calls at the Rapture will be infinitely more powerful and extensive (world-wide).

Who Will Hear the Trumpet Calls?

Nowhere in Scripture do we find that only God’s people heard trumpet calls or the blasts from a shofar. All within earshot, including their enemies, heard the shofar sound. In the Bible, we also see events in which God’s prophets and sometimes the people saw and heard angels or the pre-incarnate Christ, but so did unbelievers. Remember Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the book of Daniel. Those three were thrown into the hotter-than-hot furnace, but how many men did Nebuchadnezzar see when he peered into the furnace? That’s right: Four. And the fourth was none other than the pre-incarnate Messiah.

Was it only Saul who heard the voice of Jesus on the road to Damascus? No, his accomplices also heard the sound of the voice that spoke to Saul. They didn’t actually see Jesus, but then neither did Saul; he only saw the blinding light that caused him three days of blindness. My point and premise: I’m wondering how we ever arrived at the notion that those left behind at the Rapture won’t hear the trumpet calls, and not see perhaps a flash of light or afterglow or radiance or some tangible evidence at the precise spot where a believer miraculously changed in front of them when the final trumpet call was sounded. Why would God close the ears or the eyes of the unsaved? Seeing and hearing is often times believing.

With the Biblical precedents and parallels to support the premise that the entire world will hear the trumpets and, conversely, the lack of reference in Scripture to say otherwise, why wouldn’t God want the world to see and hear the Rapture? I’m convinced that many will immediately fall down on their knees and call upon the name of the Lord to save them. This applies not only to the trumpets, but also to the Lord’s shout and the voice of the archangel. Why wouldn’t they be heard the world over?

The Shout Heard Around the World:

Most know about, “the shot heard around the world,” that started the American Revolutionary War. At the Rapture, it will be the “shout heard around the world.” The shout of Christ, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet call of God will shake the world like it’s never been shaken before. It will give a whole new meaning to “shock and awe.” And, the entire sequence of events involving Jesus descent from heaven, loud shout, voice of the archangel, trumpet call(s) of God that lead to the last blast of the trumpet, will take several minutes. This literal lapse of time needed for a literal series of visual and audio events to occur will NOT take place in a blink of the eye. Only the grand finale of it all will happen in the twinkling of an eye. Which is, as you know by now, the supernatural transformation of our earthly body.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more inclined I am to propose that those left behind may even witness our newly resurrected (the dead) and transformed (the living) bodies ascend to heaven. Why not? Isn’t that part of the whole sequence? We’ve mistakenly (meaning without any direct support or evidence from Scripture), assumed that the microsecond change of our bodies’ means that those bodies instantly vanish or disappear from sight. Since the blink of an eye phenomenon relates only to the actual transfiguration itself, why do we also equate that with a split second disappearance?

I Thessalonians 4 tells us that we will be “caught up” in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Why would caught up necessarily equate to an instant vanishing? Remember how Jesus ascended to heaven as described in Acts 1: 9-11? All who were with him saw him rising into heaven, until they could no longer see him. One of the two angels who showed up even said, “Why are you standing here staring into heaven?” There was no vanishing going on. Picture watching a hot-air balloon ascending. Why wouldn’t our meeting Jesus in the clouds be just like His ascension to heaven? Our transformed bodies will be like his … why not our rising to meet him be similar or identical?

SUMMARY:

Thus, I believe that common sense, reinforced heavily by Biblical precedents and even more so by accurate examination of the Rapture passages (that we’ve done in this article) lead to a very convincing conclusion: The entire episode of the Rapture from start to finish will take several minutes. This will allow time for such things as: pulling cars over to the side of the road; awaking in the middle of the night from a deep sleep; turning off the T.V or loud music; stop the yelling at someone; hugging your un-believing spouse or friend good-bye; the short, but most intense praise and worship ever experienced by Christians on this earth; and, hopefully, a few minutes for some foxhole conversions all over the world.

Do you see what difference it would make and how it could enhance and expand our view of and increase even more our enthusiasm for the Rapture, if the order of events in the Rapture took place over several minutes? It would be far more than just a “poof” one second here, next second gone type of experience. Next to the triumphant resurrection of Jesus Christ, it will be the greatest celebration of joy ever experienced by believers in Christ. And in real-time and space no less; no special effects, no suspension of time, no virtual reality … just the real thing. None of which (except for the transfiguration of our bodies) can or will take place in the twinkling of an eye.

This is the way the Lord intended it to be, and this is the way that the Bible passages on the Rapture tell us it will be. I believe the evidence—as summarized in this article—conclusively demonstrates that the blink of an eye relates only to the miraculous transfiguration of our mortal bodies. Whereas, the progression of events that culminate in this instantaneous change will take several minutes of actual time.

In closing, let’s put the proverbial icing on the cake by reading Isaiah 18:3 from the New American Standard: “All you inhabitants of the world and dwellers on earth, as soon as a standard is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and as soon as the trumpet (shofar) is blown, you will hear it.” This is one of many end-times prophecies found in Isaiah. Did you catch the first word of this verse?

Things to Ponder:

– Given the length of time to sound the series of trumpet calls, plus the time it will take for the other aspects of the Rapture to take place, would you care to make a guess as to how long it might take? To do so, you might want to break down all of the sequential parts of the Rapture. My own thought is that God could very well utilize the number 7 (as he does so often in the book of Revelation and other books of the Bible). I’m thinking the whole process could take seven minutes, with, perhaps, three or four minutes needed for the trumpet calls.
– Can you imagine the exclamations from the lips of those about to be transformed? Such as, “Lord you’re here!” Or, “I’m going home!” Or, “It’s actually happening!” What other shouts of joy (or sorrow from the left behind) can you think of?
– Can you think of some other things that people might do during the few minutes span of the Rapture?

Who the Rapture?

The Rapture (What, Why, When, Who & How)

WHO WILL BE TAKEN IN THE RAPTURE?

Or, we could also ask the question, “Who will not be taken?” To begin with, let’s do ask that question. First, we can state the obvious: not everyone on earth will be taken. Why? Because there would be no reason for the Rapture if everyone on earth was included. If every man and woman had accepted God’s salvation through Jesus Christ, there would be no reason for God to pour out his wrath on a depraved world; thus, no point in “snatching” away believers to transfigure them, transport them, and protect them from the most apocalyptic disaster the world has even seen or will see again.

So, then, who will be left behind. Scripture is abundantly clear on this matter, as several passages in Revelation tell us. I will quote just one verse that yields a descriptive term for those who (by a choice they have already made) will remain on the earth. “And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world…” (Revelation 13:14, italics for emphasis). The “he” of this verse is the false prophet, and the “first beast” is the Antichrist. In the New Living Translation, the phrase, “all the people who belong to this world” is used several times in Revelation, and refers to those alive on the earth after the Rapture. They are the ones who deliberately (knowing full well what they are doing) take the mark of the Beast, which clearly seals their fate. Once that mark is taken, there is no turning back, no second guessing, no second chance (See Revelation 14: 9-11).

Unlike ambiguous conditions which currently exist on the earth, there will be no fence-riding or gray areas or indecisiveness concerning the choices to be made during the Tribulation period. And, there will be precious little time for procrastination. Either you follow and worship the Beast, or you die from starvation or execution. Either you see through the deception and lies of the Antichrist and (at the risk of intense deprivation, persecution, and death) turn to Messiah Jesus; or you forfeit everlasting life in Heaven and spend eternity in the Lake of Fire.

That’s why the Bible says, “Today is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2). Which means, don’t put it off. If death doesn’t claim unbelievers before the Rapture, then Antichrist will (lay claim to them) after the Rapture. The chances of a person turning to Christ after the Rapture are not good. The chances of taking the mark of the beast are quite good … who wants to be deprived of buying and selling, of home and property, of rights and freedom? Who wants to be hunted down and put to death? (See Revelation 13: 13-18). Which is why so many will literally sell their soul to Satan (through total allegiance to the Antichrist); meaning they will choose temporary safety and security over everlasting life. What a disastrous decision that will be. We have the same choice now, but without anything approaching the incredible pressure to choose “anti” Christ over the true Christ, during the Tribulation. Even now, what a tragic thing it is to die without believing and receiving Messiah Jesus as personal Savior.

They “belong” to the world because they love the things of the world and don’t want to part with pleasure, prosperity, prestige, power, or pride. Despite all the irrefutable evidence, not the least of which is the historically documented fact that Jesus arose from the dead, they refuse to believe that Jesus is the only way to God, the only source of salvation, the only means of everlasting life in heaven. “For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Chris Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5). During the Great Tribulation, the unbelievers will recognize and acknowledge that the majority of the apocalyptic catastrophes come from God and his Messiah, Jesus Christ. Yet (incomprehensible as it may seem), they will still refuse to repent … which means to change their minds, reject the lies foisted on them by the Antichrist and his false prophet, and accept Christ as their Savior, as the true Messiah (See Revelation 9: 20-21).

A Shocking Example of Those Who Belong to the World, Then and Now

I recently read an article on Prophecy News Watch in which (former) Archbishop of the South African Anglican Church, Desmond Tutu, said something to the effect that he would rather go to hell than live in heaven and worship a “homophobic God.” Does he have any clue what he’s really thinking or the implications of what he said? Be careful what you wish for! His reference to homophobic was in the context of LGBT equality rights; and, by implication, any other political or social issue in today’s politically correct world, that everyone is expected to be unequivocally tolerant about, such as all religions are equal to the Christian faith in finding a path to God. And his brash statement was transparently void of any Biblical truth regarding the subject that generated his comment, or his (lack of) understanding of our Great God and his attributes.

The last time I studied the attributes of God in the Bible (such as holy, love, omnipotent, omniscient, among many others) I didn’t see anywhere the attribute of “homophobia.” However, HE IS and speaks absolute Truth. Among many other eternal realities found in the Bible, God’s truth also deals with the issue of LGBT lifestyles. But, of course, if someone doesn’t happen to accept God’s truth or randomly picks and chooses what they believe, then all that person need do is to claim that Christians and even God, himself, are homophobic, and that makes it true. Then everyone is supposed to agree, because that’s what you do when you’re impartial and politically correct. But when they do that, aren’t they siding with what Mr. Tutu claims as truth, meaning that God must be homophobic if he doesn’t condone homosexuality? So they’ve taken the side of what they think is true, and when they take sides aren’t they being intolerant of those on the other side … those who claim that God’s truth IS truth?

Finally, Mr. Tutu apparently has no concept about hell either, which Jesus repeatedly described as … well, as a place you don’t want to be. And, from all people–an Archbishop. But that’s another thing the Bible says about the last days: good will be called evil, and evil will be considered good. When all is said and done, what can be so wrong in agreeing with our Creator, the true and living God?

THOSE TAKEN AT THE RAPTURE:

This is equally easy to comprehend. All those who have been “born again” (a term first used by Jesus, himself in John 3:3), will be taken. Jesus then explains to Nicodemus what born again means, i.e. a spiritual rebirth that is every bit as real and permanent as our biological birth. A born-again believer in Christ is absolutely guaranteed eternal life the minute he/she accepts Christ as personal Savior. You can no more be spiritually unborn, than you can be physically unborn. Heaven is a place where God dwells, a place promised to all true Christians when they die or when Christ takes them in the Rapture. Eternal life is a state of being, irrevocably given to us by God as a free gift the very second we place our trust in the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

Once you breathe your first breath of life, you are a real person on this earth. According to Scripture, you actually became a human being the moment you were conceived. Likewise, once you are born from above (spiritually), your spirit is instantly made alive. Before that, the Bible tells us that our spirit was “dead,” meaning unable to relate to God in any way, shape, or form. Think about it: Dead things can’t do anything. Then at the Rapture, our very bodies (whether dead or still alive) will be transfigured to enable us to live forever.

The minute we are redeemed, our citizenship in Heaven begins. Our real home now and then is Heaven. For the present, we’re living in a temporary shelter. But it’s just a matter of time before we move to our new address. We already have a passport … stamped, and sealed by God. On each passport is a picture of Jesus, just above these words: “Crucified, buried, and risen!” And our transportation is prearranged by Christ, himself … a catching up in the clouds to be with our Lord forever more! How good is that!

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?

This may be the most difficult part of the Rapture to talk about, as there are many parents, even some Christian parents, who prefer not to think about the Rapture, let alone talk about it. It’s too unsettling, too uncertain, too interruptive … just too everything. And, unfortunately, many pastors/teachers in the Church consistently avoid preaching or teaching on end times prophecy. It’s disconcerting, bewildering, maybe even unnerving.

*Note: Here I need to be completely compassionate and sensitive to these thoughts and views about the end times. Meaning to relate to those (parents) who, when it comes to their children– especially those past the age of innocence–are apprehensive about not only the Rapture, but the entire scenario of the last days of this age.

Normally those Christian parents, who prefer not to think about these things, don’t like the idea of a happy home being suddenly disrupted (by anything). And, at face value, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just that sometimes we forget God’s promises in the Bible such as found in Ephesians 3:20, New American Standard Bible: “Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.”

Notice, that the Apostle Paul says, ask OR think. There are some things we don’t need to ask for, such as eternal life, or the Holy Spirit, or a resurrected body. These and many other things are promised and/or freely given to us at the moment of our spiritual rebirth in Christ. On the contrary, we only need to think about these things. But whether we ask or think (or both), guess what Ephesians 3:20 promises: We can multiply exponentially what the Lord will do for us and give to us. That’s what “exceeding” and “abundant” clearly convey. When applied to the Rapture and everlasting life it means that our home and relationships (for example, with our children) in heaven will be exceedingly abundant above even the best of times we have on this earth, more than we can possibly imagine. The New Living Translation of the Bible says, “infinitely more than we might ask or think.” So, it’s okay mom and dad and kids. We will instantly realize beyond all doubt that, “We’ve never had it so good.”

Current Consensus

The prevailing thought among many Christians, including Bible scholars, pastors, and teachers is that ALL children who are still at the age of innocence–those who do not yet have the capacity either in their heart or mind to understand and, therefore, choose (accept) the free gift of salvation offered by God–will be taken in the Rapture alongside of older children and adults who have already made a decision to accept Christ as their personal Savior. The fact of the matter is that on this side of eternity, we do not know for sure; on the other hand I believe there are significant precedents in Scripture that give us cause/reason to take a second look at the children. These precedents do not support the premise that ALL children will be taken when the Rapture occurs.

In my first book, a novel entitled, O Israel, this topic is addressed, through one of the main characters, Avram Levitt. You’ll find it in the final three pages of the novel, which is the 7th world-wide email sent by Avram to those alive during the Tribulation. If you haven’t read O Israel, and would like a copy, let me know by email or on the blog site, and I will see that you get a copy.

My Premise & the Precedents:

First, a little more explanation as to the predominant view among most Christians that all innocent children will be taken in the Rapture, despite Biblical evidence to the contrary. The main reason (for some, the only reason) can best be summarized as a deduction, based mostly on sentiment; one, however, that at face value, is also logical and appealing. It’s one that any Christian, including me, would want to see happen; as we would not want innocent children exposed to the horrific things that will take place during the Great Tribulation. We would hope that they would be spared from the wrath of God’s judgments, and, of course, from the evil that will be prevalent throughout the earth, compliments of Satan and his man of lawlessness.

But, there is actually a positive or up-side to certain children of unbelievers being left behind. You might ask: “How could there be any good from leaving children behind at the Rapture?” The answer lies in I Corinthians Chapter 7, especially verse 14. We’ll get to that passage, shortly. For now, let’s examine the two Biblical events that establish a principle or pattern; with each event strongly suggesting a similar or even an identical correlation to the Rapture.

(A) The Great Flood: Here, I’d like to quote my O Israel character Avram Levitt’s analysis of God’s monumental historical judgment in the context of all children living on the earth at that time; and as placed in the context of the Rapture which had already taken place when Avram wrote this and other emails. Avram postulates, “Scripture is clear as to the purpose of this calamity: to deal with the irreversible wickedness and depravity of man. But this judgment also gave mankind another chance to acknowledge and serve his Creator. Noah and his family were spared to repopulate the earth. What is the relevance of this example to the question of the children? The significance is that the children were not spared.” (Italics in this article for emphasis).

(B) Sodom & Gomorrah: As with Noah and his family, only Lot (with the exception of his wife, who disobeyed the angel’s command not to look back) and his family were spared from the complete destruction of these two cities (five cities all told) and obliteration of all the inhabitants. Because God knows the end from the beginning, he knew the wickedness of these cities was inevitable, perpetual, and irreversible … including the innocent children who would grow up to be as or even more wicked than their parents. Same thing with Noah’s flood.

So, I would ask the question: “If God did not spare the children from the Great Flood or from the utter destruction of Sodom, is there any reason why children of “those who belong to the world” wouldn’t or couldn’t or shouldn’t be left behind at the Rapture and, thereby, go through all or part of the Tribulation. Incidentally, only God knows whether a child has passed the age of innocence and reached the point of accountability. Some say the age of 7, some say 8, others say 12 or 13. For example, in Jewish culture a boy or girl becomes a man or woman at the age of 13, after their Bar Mitzvah or Bat (for girls) Mitzvah.

Why do I suggest that only some of the children (age of innocence) will be left behind at the Rapture. Answer: I Corinthians 7: 14. “For the Christian wife brings holiness to her marriage, and the Christian husband brings holiness to his marriage. Otherwise, your children would not be holy, but now they are holy.” The Greek word translated “holiness” in English does not mean perfection. Rather, like the Old Testament Hebrew word, it means “set aside for a specific purpose.”

What is the Apostle Paul saying in this passage? He’s telling us that when a wife, or a husband, or (by implication and by the same principle) when a child is saved, there’s a strong probability that one or more other members of that family will also come to Christ. The “holiness” is the influence transferred from the Christian family member to unbelieving members. And, to continue the principle, both Lot and Noah’s children were taken out of harm’s way before the floodwaters covered the earth and before the fire/brimstone destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. So, too, will the innocent children of those believers caught up in the Rapture be taken with their parent or parents. But the children of the unsaved, those who are left behind, will remain. Yet, I’m convinced that God will use these children to help influence, if not persuade parents (if they have any love or concern for their children) to turn to Christ, rather than to give allegiance to the Antichrist.

Summary:

Either view (all children taken or only those belonging to at least one saved parent are taken) is ultimately a matter of some speculation. When, however, it comes to “spiritual” speculation, the speculating is much more viable if it has some foundational evidence in the Bible to back up the supposition. The premise that I’ve presented has Biblical support through two very strong precedents … Noah’s children and Lot’s children were spared. Conversely, the children of the Great Flood and of Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction were not spared. Both establish a remarkable parallel to what probably will take place at the Rapture, concerning not only the adult believers and non-believers, but also the children.

Next week we will take a close look at the How of the Rapture, which is the fifth and final articles in this series. It includes shouts, trumpets, a speed of light transformation, and such things. And it will present a stunning alternative to the commonly accepted view of how the Rapture takes place. Don’t miss it!

Things to Ponder:
– Do you think it will be easier, harder, or about the same for someone to believe in and follow Christ during the last 3 ½ years of the Tribulation (which is the time that Antichrist is given great power and authority throughout the earth), than it is now, before the Rapture?
– Can you think of any other Biblical event or events in which the children of the ungodly were not spared?
– Early in the article, I indicate that those who remain on the earth after the Rapture, will remain by choice. How can it be their decision when God is supernaturally orchestrating the Rapture?

When the Rapture?

Rapture (What, Why, When, Who & How)

WHEN Will the Rapture Take Place?

Do you know? I certainly don’t know when Christ will descend with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. No one knows. Except to know that it will take place exactly when God determines, at the time God has appointed … not sooner, not later. But it will happen, just as sure as the fact that Christ came to earth the first time, through Mary’s miraculous conception.

Frankly, any attempt to predict an exact date for the Rapture is an irresponsible exercise in futility, as all prior prognostications have been pathetically inaccurate. But, someone’s bound to get these end-of-the world predictions right sooner or later; so why not keep on trying to set dates? Because Jesus, himself, said so: “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return” (Matthew 25:13). This was the third time in the space of just a few verses that the Lord told his disciples: neither they nor anyone could possibly determine the hour and day of the Rapture. Which is why all previous specific date/time predictions have failed miserably. Example: What happened last December 21 (2012)? Answer: Absolutely nothing! So, you can throw your Mayan calendar away. It doesn’t work!

For the past two hundred years or so, several self-deluded individuals or religious leaders have set their own date for “the end of the world.” Sadly, some of these misguided soothsayers generated a pretty good size following; many of these followers sold all their possessions, and literally stood on rocks or roof tops scanning the skies. After failing once, at least two of these “prophets” actually had the audacity to revise their predictions, citing some technical miscalculations, then setting another date … only to be wrong again. I won’t mention their names, as I’m sure they or their descendants have experienced enough embarrassment as it is. Moreover, based on what Jesus said, I can virtually guarantee that the Lord would never return on a day that has been “prophetically selected” for his return.

But, there is an aspect of when the Rapture will occur that we can know … a component part that the Bible clearly explains by means of placing this magnificent event in real-time sequence, meaning in proximity to other global events or developments. That is to say: We can know the signs (of the times) that signal the “beginning of the end.” In Matthew Chapter 24, Jesus presents some specific markers relevant to the timing of his return, and these signs correlate with and connect to the Rapture; with the Rapture then ushering in the “Day of the Lord” (the Great Tribulation followed by the Thousand-year reign of Christ on the earth).

Thus, our task is to watch ongoing developments around the world (especially in the Middle East); and wait with confident expectancy, all the while sharpening our eye of prophecy.

Jesus referred to one of these indicators as perhaps the most significant accomplishment just before the end of this age will come. “And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through-out the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). State of the art transportation and technology have literally made this possible in our life time. Since the first century when Christ commissioned his followers to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, and particularly in the last hundred years or so, nearly every nation, language, ethnic group, and culture has heard God’s message of salvation one way or another, i.e. missionaries, radio, television, internet, distribution of the Bible in many languages, evangelical crusades (Billy Graham comes to mind), and person-to-person sharing of the Gospel.

Let’s examine one other major event and one correlating condition that the Bible places in very close time proximity to the Rapture.

THE PHYSICAL REBIRTH OF ISRAEL

Event: Our generation has witnessed the return of the Jews from the four corners of the earth to their God-given land, after nearly two thousand years in exile. Long ago, several prophets in hundreds of Old Testament passages prophetically announced this spectacular achievement, one that no other nation on earth has ever accomplished—Israel’s complete destruction, then restoration, then reappearance once again as a sovereign nation with a literal revival of their ancient language, Hebrew. Once again, blog space/time doesn’t allow citation of even a handful of these prophecies; thus, I will select only two:

“Therefore, prophesy to them and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again. Then I will bring you back to the land of Israel. When this happens, O my people, you will know that I am the Lord. I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live again and return home to your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken, and I have done what I said. Yes, the Lord has spoken!’” (Ezekiel 37: 12-14). And then Amos 9: 14-15: “I will bring my exiled people of Israel back from distant lands, and they will rebuild their ruined cities and live in them again … I will firmly plant them there in their own land. They will never again be uprooted from the land I have given them, says the Lord your God.”

Before the turn of the 20th century, most of Israel, especially modern-day Tel Aviv, resembled a wasteland–void of agriculture, absent new construction of office buildings and homes, and with only a sparse population of Jews and Arabs. Then an amazing series of events unfolded (good and bad) beginning with the Balfour declaration of 1917 near the end of WWI, followed by an influx of tens of thousands of Jews to Palestine, which is what Israel was called at that time. Then World War II erupted because Hitler wanted to accomplish two evil objectives: (1) complete conquest and domination of Europe; (2) total annihilation of Jews in all countries that Germany had conquered and wanted to conquer. It was a sinister plan that the Nazis euphemistically labeled, “The Final Solution,” which since has been called, The Holocaust.

*Foot Note: “Final Solution” was designed to be an inoffensive (even noble) sounding phrase that would deceitfully deflect the Nazi’s real, but warped, objective of solving the world’s problems by means of exterminating the entire Jewish race. The idea of Jewish genocide wasn’t new to Hitler; however, he took it to a diabolical level never seen before. And, as some of you have seen and heard: This same “idea” has been bluntly and publicly announced (recently) by Iran’s former president, as well as some leaders in the Arab world, i.e. “we will wipe Israel from the face of the map.”

But then something miraculous occurred: God turned the incomprehensible horror of The Holocaust into a fulfillment of prophecy and the hope and dream of every Jew the world over … “next year in Jerusalem.” God brought the Jewish people back to Israel.

The Jews had said: “Never again.” Never again must something like this happen … the cold-blooded murder of six million Jews by government and military officials who had acted on the orders of one man. It was absolutely imperative that the Jews possess their own land, and be governed by their own people; otherwise, they would continue to be at the mercy of the nations to which they had been exiled long ago.

And, only three years after the war ended in Europe, the United Nations recognized Israel as a sovereign state on May 14, 1948. In one day the nation of Israel was born! Which is exactly what the prophet Isaiah predicted nearly 2,700 years earlier. “Who has ever seen anything as strange as this? Who ever heard of such a thing? Has a nation ever been born in a single day? Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment … ‘Would I ever bring this nation to the point of birth and then not deliver it? asks the Lord. No, I would never keep this nation from being born, says your God’” (Isaiah 66: 8-9).

After May 14, 1948, the immigration gates were flung open. Tens of thousands of Jews returned to Israel, despite intense opposition from Arab countries and even from a WWII ally, England.

A Personal Pilgrimage to Israel

In March, 2006, my sister, Marge, and I traveled through much of Israel (not with a tour group, but in a rental car, no less!). My primary purpose for traveling to the Holy Land was to do research on my first book, a novel, O Israel … the end is the beginning for those left behind.

We can tell you with first-hand, up close and personal affirmation: Israel has changed! She is beautiful: We saw an abundance of flowers, vineyards, trees, gardens, fields, buildings, and highways. She is self-governed: We took pictures of the Knesset, and drove by city halls, and the Supreme Court of Israel. She is strong: we watched IDF soldiers, both men and woman, as they protected the city streets and patrolled the countryside to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens and foreign tourists, and as a sign of force and peace throughout the land. She is free: We traveled uninhibited, having to stop at only one checkpoint, and we watched children playing at their schools and in the streets. She is populated: Recently the Jewish population reached 6 million, a tremendously significant and symbolic number to the Jews (6 million were murdered in Nazi Germany during WW II). She is diverse: We witnessed a variety of culture, race, religion, and education that can only be found in very large countries like the USA.

We visited Nazareth where Jesus grew up as a boy. We stood by the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on the water and commanded the raging storm to hush. We ascended the Mount of Olives from where our Lord returned to heaven forty days after his resurrection, which is also the place he will first step foot when he returns to earth. We ate and shopped in the corridors of Old Jerusalem where Jesus lovingly taught and compassionately healed so many people. We trekked up the steep pathway to Har (which means mountain) Megiddo and peered into the valley below, where Jesus will triumphantly defeat the Antichrist and his armies at the last battle of Armageddon. We strolled through the Garden where Jesus spent his last night before he was falsely arrested, illegally tried, unjustly condemned, then unmercifully nailed to a cross. We entered the tomb where he was buried. There is a sign posted in the tomb that reads: “He is not here, he is risen.” I cried when I saw that sign. They were tears of joy. And I will unashamed say along with all those who have personally placed their trust and eternal destiny in Jesus Christ, “Hallelujah, Our redeemer lives!” Soon, very soon, he will return in great power and glory. Are you ready?

THE FINAL GENERATION:

Condition: A second prominent feature of when the Rapture will take place is mentioned by Jesus, himself. Listen to his words. “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things take place” (Matthew 24: 32-34).

What are “these things” referenced by Jesus when he made this astonishing prediction on the Mount of Olives. They are a riveting list of events that will precede his glorious appearing. Read for yourself in Matthew 24 and 25. The majority of Biblical scholars identify the representative fig tree as the nation of Israel … based on several Scriptural passages that symbolically equate Israel with a fig tree. Jesus is essentially telling us: Once these things begin to happen–like knowing that summer is right around the corner when the fig tree (Israel) begins to bud–then his return is very, very close.

When did Israel begin to bud, then blossom, then bear fruit? You’re right: first in 1917 after the Jews were permitted to possess most of what today is modern Israel. Again, when Israel became a nation in 1948. And, yet again, when they finally took back Jerusalem, the Holy City of the Holy Land, in the Six-Day War of 1967. The Bible tells us that Jerusalem is loved by God more than any other city in the world; and Scripture is clear that Jerusalem, the ancient capital of Israel and home of King David, will be The City from where Messiah Jesus will establish his rule and reign over the nations of the earth.

In the Bible, we find two basic definitions or time periods of a “generation.” They are 70 years and 100 years. You do the math. You could select the monumental historical milestone of 1917, when England declared Palestine a two-region territory, with joint occupation/possession by the Jews and Arabs. Sadly the Arabs refused, but the Jews began to return in increasing numbers, and cultivated the land. And you can select 1947/1948 which is when the United Nations voted in favor of Israel becoming a nation (November, 1947); followed a few months later by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion’s stunning declaration that Israel was now a sovereign state. Israel had been reborn from the fires of Nazi death camps and from the floods of exiled dispersion. None other than the US President, Harry Truman, was the first to recognize Israel’s right to enter the world’s family of nations.

There are other factors to consider, but these major events could very well mark the beginning of the last generation … a 100-year generation from 1917, and a 70-year generation from 1947. These two events are hugely significant milestones to Israel’s history and to Biblical prophecy. Am I saying that the Lord will return in 2017 (by doing the math)? No, I am not. But I have studied other passages of Scripture, not the least of which is the somewhat mysterious 7-times over sequence as found in the book of Leviticus. One conclusion is that the years 2017 through 2019 could very well fit all Biblical passages dealing with the short time-frame of Christ’s return. No way will I or should anyone specify the day or hour, but the Lord encourages us to recognize the seasons and signs surrounding his second coming. The fact remains: He could return at any moment!

*Note: Following the series of articles on Out of the Abyss (which begins 8-31), we’ll spend a few weeks on two incredible passages of Scripture that refer to actual periods of time in which Messiah’s first and second advent are predicted. The first (the Biblical prediction of the actual date of Christ’s first coming) was discovered by Sir Robert Anderson, as detailed in his book, The Coming Prince. The second: The end of the Jewish exile and domination by the Gentile nations, the rebirth of Israel as a nation, and, therefore, the generational period of time when Christ would return, can be identified in a relatively obscure passage in Leviticus Chapter 26, that provides an astonishing “time-frame” of the second coming. For emphasis, let me repeat: A time-frame, not a specific date or time. But, I’m convinced that this time-frame IS our generation.

Blog along with me and we’ll see just how it works.

Please join me next week. We’ll take a look at the Who of the Rapture.

Things to Ponder:
– What is meant by the term, “Imminent return of Christ”  and, what does it mean to you?

– Each time that Jesus said that we can’t know (the time), he specifically referred to the day and hour. Do you think “day/hour” was more or less a generic way of saying that no one can know even approximately when he will return. Or, in the context of the Lord’s detailed response to his disciples’ question found in Matthew 24:3 (“What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?”), do you think Jesus wants us to at least know the (short time) window of his return.

– When the Rapture occurs, do you think most of those left behind will know what has happened? Or will they come up with several different reasons (trying to explain it away) why millions of people are gone?
